The Career Decisions that Matter More than Money

In the current full-employment landscape, IT professionals have the upper hand. Companies are bending over backwards looking for quality tech talent which, in theory, should make the job hunt easier than ever. The reality of the matter is, choosing the right position can be an even more difficult decision when there are a plethora of career opportunities in front of you. While compensation can make a great barometer for good and bad offers, when making a career decision, there’s more to consider than just salary. Be sure to factor in these other benefits while you’re searching for your next role.

Flexibility

While work may be stressful and demanding at times, it should never be a priority over your wellbeing. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is paramount for both professional and personal success. Typically, companies with more flexibility for their employees are more in-tune with their employees, having higher employee retention rates than their rigid counterparts.

Depending on your needs, there are a variety of ways that workplaces can provide you with flexibility in your schedule. Occasional remote work-days are great stress relievers for those that have a long commute or work in large offices. Organizations that offer generous or unlimited PTO could be a better fit if you enjoy traveling or spending quality time with family and friends. Flexible hours, where you can decide what your daily schedule is opposed to the typical 9-to-5, is another great option for parents who have to make childcare arrangements or individuals who prefer to sleep-in.

Professional Development Opportunities

Salary aside, the top reason that tech professionals are seeking new employment in 2018 is to advance their IT skills. Technology training and development opportunities provide you with the opportunity to grow in your current role and throughout the rest of your career. Look for companies offering programs that assist you in gaining more experience in specific skill sets, developing new skills, and gaining exposure to different technologies. When organizations develop these programs, it shows their passion and willingness to invest in employees.

Along with offering professional development opportunities, inquire about what growth looks like within the company. Before accepting their offer, make sure that there’s potential for upward mobility and you’re able to work towards your long-term career goals. From day one, your potential employers should be confident enough in your capabilities that they believe you can take on future responsibilities.

Company Culture

Another factor for consideration when evaluating a new role is the culture of the organization. Feeling comfortable, engaged, and motivated in an office environment is critical to daily happiness. A company culture can affect how you feel about going into work, as well as how effective you are in your role. A culture is made up of a variety of different personalities and attitudes. Team members create the environment and energy of the organization, both positive or negative. You’ll be spending a lot of time with your future co-workers so it’s important to ensure that they’re people you’re compatible with.

Additionally, working for an organization goes beyond the hours you put in every day. Consider the company’s values and where your personal beliefs align with them. Whether you’re looking for an organization that prioritizes innovation, a company that goes above and beyond for their employees, or a business who is heavily involved in the local community, you should feel that you stand for the same things as your potential employer.

The Career Decisions that Matter More than Money

An estimated one-third of your life will be spent at work. Before diving headfirst into your next IT job search, pinpoint the areas that you find the most beneficial for your happiness and wellbeing. Ensure that your potential future employers have similar values and programs put into place that will benefit you today and throughout your career. Make your work, work for you.
