Where Databricks Engagements Actually Land

Databricks searches split three ways. A greenfield lakehouse, a migration, or a rescue.

Greenfield is the simplest to staff. New team, clean account, room to lay down Unity Catalog the right way and stand up DLT and Workflows without inheriting a mess. We typically place a senior data engineer plus a mid as the first two hires, with an architect on a fractional engagement to set workspace topology and the metastore model before the builds get hard to undo.

Migrations are harder. A client moving 600 EMR Spark jobs and a Hadoop catalog into Databricks needs a lead who has done it, plus two or three engineers who can rewrite legacy Hive UDFs, rebuild streaming pipelines, and validate row-level parity at cutover. We have run several. The quiet failure mode is underestimating the policy and access work. A working pipeline is one thing. Reproducing five years of HDFS path-based ACLs inside Unity Catalog is another, and it is rarely scoped honestly up front.

Rescues are the most urgent. The team shipped a notebook-driven mess that is now costing $90K a month in DBUs and no one can pinpoint why. Here the right hire is a Certified Data Engineer Professional or an experienced administrator who reads the query profile, finds the all-purpose cluster running an overnight ETL, switches it to a job cluster, and rewrites the worst Photon-incompatible UDFs. Databricks engineer versus data engineer, what is the real difference?

A data engineer is a role. Databricks is a platform, and a fairly opinionated one. Every Databricks engineer is a data engineer, but not every data engineer can step into a Databricks workspace on day one. The gap shows up in Databricks-specific concepts. Cluster sizing and policy. DBU accounting. Delta Lake’s optimization model. Unity Catalog topology. The Photon execution model and what breaks under it. A data engineer coming from Spark on EMR or pure Snowflake will pick most of this up in a quarter, but a greenfield project or a migration does not have a quarter to wait. That is when the Databricks-native hire matters.

Do we really need a Databricks-certified engineer?

It depends on the role. For a mid-level pipeline engineer, the Data Engineer Associate cert is a reasonable floor. For architects, administrators, and migration leads, we push hard for Data Engineer Professional or ML Practitioner because the exam content actually maps to what breaks real lakehouses. Certs are not a perfect proxy for skill. A cert-free engineer with 4 years of production Databricks experience is often stronger than a certified candidate who has only worked in sandboxes. Contract or direct hire for Databricks work?

Contract for migrations, rescues, and MLflow stand-ups. Direct hire for the permanent platform team. Migrations have a defined endpoint, so a contract lead plus two engineers is the cleaner shape and the cleaner budget.
