Why MLOps Hiring Is Different From DevOps Recruiting

A Gartner survey found that 87% of ML projects never make it to production. That gap isn’t usually a model quality problem. It’s an infrastructure problem. And the people who close that gap sit at an intersection that most technical recruiters genuinely don’t understand.

A DevOps engineer who knows Kubernetes and Python isn’t an MLOps engineer. The domain knowledge matters. Model registries, feature store design, drift detection, GPU utilization, the specific failure modes of serving inference at scale, these are things a generalist DevOps recruiter won’t screen for because they don’t know to ask.

  • MLOps engineers need ML foundations, not just operational ones. They need to understand why a model retrains, not just how to schedule the job.

Technical Scoping Call

The talent pool for MLOps is narrow enough that insisting on local-only typically means waiting longer for weaker candidates. If you need someone in your timezone or on-site for a hardware-adjacent role like GPU cluster management or data center integration, we can work with that constraint. For pure cloud-based ML infrastructure work, going remote opens significantly stronger options.
