Every figure on this page is a bill rate. That’s the hourly amount an employer is invoiced for a W2 contractor. Wages, payroll taxes and insurance, already folded in. The number drops into a budget exactly as written. No math required.
A Boston IT director asks the same question before a req ever opens. What will this seat cost for a quarter? Fair question. Not a simple one, either, in a market that stretches from Back Bay finance to Kendall Square biotech software. KORE1 has worked contract placements nationally since 2005, and the figures below sit beside our Boston IT staffing team, priced on the contract staffing terms behind our broader IT staffing services.
What Does a Contract IT Worker Cost per Hour in Boston in 2026?
Eight roles, twelve rows by level. Every range runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile, so it shows where the middle half of quotes land. Thirteen weeks at 40 hours is 520 hours, and twenty-six weeks is 1,040.

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Boston?
Twice the term costs twice as much. Simple math. Nothing in a W2 contract discounts the hourly rate for a longer stay, so 520 hours and 1,040 hours scale in a straight line. The only lever on the hourly figure is seniority. No volume discount.
A mid-level software engineer at the Boston median comes to about $66,400 for a quarter and $132,800 for half a year. A Level 2 help desk technician comes to $31,500, then $63,000. Those numbers hold whether the seat sits in a Back Bay finance office or a Kendall Square lab IT group.
Picture three seats opening for a systems rollout. A Level 2 help desk technician, a mid-level systems administrator and a mid-level network engineer, all priced at the median for one quarter, add up to about $146,100. A number finance can approve without a follow-up meeting.
Hit 1,040 hours and a KORE1 contractor can join your payroll with no conversion fee, so the longer term works as a built-in trial. Contract-to-hire starts exactly there. Worth planning around from day one.
How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Boston, and How Long Do Assignments Run?
Across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts nationally, the median wait from signed offer to first shift is three days. After that, the work sets the length, not the calendar.
- WeeksHours
- 3-month contract520 hours
- Median KORE1 assignment116 days, about 17 weeks
- Median KORE1 IT assignment136 days, about 19 weeks
- 6-month contract1,040 hours, the no-fee conversion point
Half of KORE1’s ended assignments run 116 days or less, just under 17 weeks. IT assignments stretch to 136. That’s how a quarter’s budget quietly turns into two quarters once the first delay hits. Projects rarely finish on a round number. They finish when the work does. Not before.
Starting is quick, though. Across those national starts, 86% were working inside seven days of an accepted offer, and 37% were working that same day. Boston’s tighter senior-engineering pool can stretch a specialized search. Help desk and admin seats still fill close to that national pace.

What Is Inside a Bill Rate?
Devin Hornick, a KORE1 partner, explains the math with a round number. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.” Then the specifics. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.”
Swap the state and the math holds. A $100 wage becomes $124 loaded. That loaded figure, not the wage, is what a bill rate sits on top of. A quote that talks about markup on wages alone has skipped the burden entirely. That’s how two honest-sounding quotes for the same person land far apart. Ask what the number covers. Every time.
Federally, that burden has a few fixed layers. IRS Publication 15 sets the employer’s Social Security share at 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare at 1.45%. Federal unemployment starts at 6.0% on the first $7,000 and usually nets to 0.6% after the state credit, per IRS Topic 759. State unemployment on top of that varies by state and by employer history, which is exactly why the index settles on one flat 24% burden instead of fifty different ones.
None of those layers shows up as its own invoice line. They’re folded into the number before KORE1’s margin even starts. A vendor billing per seat each month can be restated as an hourly figure with our guide to how contract staffing works, and the full anatomy of a rate is in what a contractor burden rate covers.
How Do Boston Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?
Same method and same levels on both sides. Only the wage area changes.
| Role and level | Boston | National | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Help desk, Level 2 | $61 | $49 | +$12 |
| Systems administrator, mid | $93 | $79 | +$14 |
| Network engineer, mid | $127 | $106 | +$21 |
| Software engineer, mid | $128 | $108 | +$20 |
| ERP / NetSuite consultant, mid | $102 | $84 | +$18 |
| IT project manager, mid | $91 | $81 | +$10 |
| Controller, mid | $140 | $127 | +$13 |
A mid-level software engineer carries a $128 median in Boston against $108 nationally. A network engineer runs $127 against $106. Those two sit inside the widest premiums on the page, both close to 19% to 20% over the national line. Controllers run the smallest gap, about 10%. That tracks with how evenly finance leadership pay tends to spread across major metros.
The premium isn’t surprising once you account for where the demand comes from. Kendall Square and the Longwood Medical Area pull software engineers and systems talent into biotech and health-tech work that pays a premium nationally, and that pulls the whole metro median up with it, even for roles that never touch a lab.
Eleven other metros sit side by side in our IT contractor rates by city comparison, including the New York and Bay Area rate pages for buyers weighing a second site against Boston. For the pull-apart on pay versus bill rate at the national level, see our national tech contractor hourly rates guide.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Boston: Which Costs Less?
Across a full year the three routes cost closer to each other than most buyers assume. The real difference is cash timing and what you can still reverse.

Contract-to-hire
The hourly rate stays put while you decide. Of 552 KORE1 contract-to-hire placements nationally, 207 ended in a hire (37.5%).

A contract carries no replacement guarantee, and we won’t dress it up as one. What KORE1 does promise is plain. Contractors arrive on time, receive pay every Friday and can convert after 1,040 hours with no fee attached. The mechanics of timesheets, weekly pay and conversion are in how contract staffing works.
Only direct hire carries the 60-day guarantee. Pick based on what you’d want the freedom to undo, not just the sticker price on month one.
How These Boston Numbers Are Built
Each modeled row starts with the BLS wage for that occupation in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH metropolitan area, from the May 2025 OEWS wage tables. Junior and Level 1 rows use the 25th percentile, mid and Level 2 rows the median, and senior and Level 3 rows the 75th. A flat 24% employer burden comes next, covering Social Security, Medicare and federal and state unemployment, followed by the bill-to-cost spread KORE1 observes on its own placements at that cost. Robert Ardell, a KORE1 partner, describes the first half of that process directly. “Scrape the web for generic stuff too… what’s the average data engineer with three years of experience… on an hourly basis… and then we use our own personal data from our contractors to complement that.”
Help desk maps to SOC 15-1232, systems administration to 15-1244, network engineering to 15-1241, software engineering to 15-1252, ERP and business systems analysis to 15-1211, project management to 13-1082, accounting to 13-2011 and controllers to 11-3031. Eight occupation codes, twelve rows by level.
Observed rows are drawn from W2 contract and contract-to-hire starts between 2023 and 2026. Payroll-only deals, offshore and corp-to-corp work and unusual bill-to-pay spreads stay out. They’d drag the medians toward arrangements that don’t look like a typical Boston contract. Version 2026-Q4 started October 16, 2026 and updates again in January 2027. The index methodology documents every step.
Common Questions
What will I pay for a Level 2 help desk technician on a 3-month contract in Boston?
$61 an hour is the median bill rate for a Level 2 help desk technician in Boston, typically $54 to $67, which comes to about $31,500 for a 13-week contract at 40 hours a week (KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4). Half a year runs about $63,000. KORE1’s own Northeast placements billed a $53 median across every level combined, though that blends juniors and seniors together, so plan on the Level 2 figure specifically for a Level 2 seat.
How much does a contract software engineer cost per hour in Boston in 2026?
Short answer: $128 an hour. That’s the median for a mid-level contract software engineer in Boston, with most quotes running $115 to $135, so a 13-week contract costs about $66,400. Seniors bill $140 to $165, median $152. Half a year at the mid-level median runs roughly $132,800. Kendall Square’s biotech software demand is a big part of why.
What does a contract systems administrator cost in Boston?
Not cheap. But not Bay Area pricing either. A mid-level systems administrator in Boston bills $85 to $101 an hour, median $93. That’s about $48,400 for 13 weeks and $96,800 for 26. KORE1’s own Northeast placements billed less, a $71 median across every level. Match the level to the seat first.
Do ERP and NetSuite contractors cost more in Boston than the national average?
Yes, by about $16 an hour at the median. The gap narrows for junior seats and widens for senior module leads. A mid-level ERP or NetSuite consultant in Boston bills $94 to $115, median $102, against $84 nationally. A 13-week quarter lands around $53,000.
What does a contract IT project manager cost in Boston?
$91 an hour is the Boston median for a mid-level IT project manager, typically $79 to $99. About $47,300 for a 13-week contract. Programs bill more. Across Northeast placements, KORE1 saw project and program managers land closer to a $119 median, since that pool mixes in bigger-scope delivery roles.
