The other is a licensed controls engineer who has to walk into a running plant on a Monday and be useful by Thursday, because the line install is on the calendar and the integrator is already booked. Same word. Nothing else in common. The second one is a hiring problem wearing a procurement label, which is why it so often gets bought on rate and then quietly costs three times the difference when the install slips a month and the integrator has to be rebooked.

Engineering Work Is Not One Continuous Load
Every motor on your floor carries a rating plate, and the useful field on it isn’t horsepower. It’s the duty class, the letter that says how the load actually arrives. IEC 60034-1 gives you S1 through S10 for exactly this reason, because a machine sized for a load that never stops is the wrong machine for a load that comes in blocks.
Headcount works the same way. Almost nobody rates it. Below are the five profiles we see most, and naming yours is most of what the first call is for.
The work never stops, so neither should the seat
Sustaining engineering, drawing ownership, the person who answers the phone when the line goes down at 2am. This load runs flat forever, and covering it with a rolling series of six-month assignments costs more than the salary would, in ramp alone. We say so on the first call and point you at direct hire staffing instead. Happens about once a month.

Roughly half the requisitions that reach us are S9 wearing an S2 costume. Somebody left, the program didn’t, and the req got written up as a clean project scope because a clean project scope is the version that clears procurement without a headcount conversation. That’s the tell. We’d rather find that out in week one than in week nine, and the fix is usually a shorter window with a written conversion path rather than a longer search.

A Six-Month Engineer Has About Five Months
Ramp is the cost nobody prices. On a permanent hire you absorb it once and forget it. On a six-month assignment it eats a fifth of what you bought, and on a three-month assignment it can take a third. That’s real money.
So we screen for something the requisition never asks about, which is whether this person is any good at arriving, because being excellent at engineering and being excellent at the first three weeks somewhere new are two different skills that do not reliably travel together. An engineer who has run four process qualifications at four different plants is useful in week one, because they already know what to ask for and who to ask for it, while an engineer with twelve excellent years at a single site often can’t function until somebody sits down and explains the local part numbering scheme. Neither is the better engineer. Only one of them is right for a window.
We ask candidates to walk us through their last first week. Not the project, the week. Who they met, what they couldn’t get access to, how long the CAD seat took, what they did while they waited.
People who have done this a few times answer in specifics and usually laugh, because every one of them has a story about eleven days without a PLM login. People who haven’t describe an onboarding process in the abstract. That tells you plenty.
Three Things a Temporary Engineering Assignment Needs Before Day One
A seasonal temp needs a badge and a supervisor. That’s the job. A degreed engineer on a bounded assignment needs three more things, and the assignments that go badly are almost always missing one of them on the Monday morning, usually the one everybody assumed somebody else had already handled.
Access that already works
CAD and PLM seats, the ERP role, network credentials, the badge, and an export-control determination if the program is ITAR-touched. Every one has a lead time. Start them now.
A boundary with a name on it
What’s in scope, what isn’t, and which manager gets to say no. Scope creep here doesn’t show up as an overrun. It shows up as an extension nobody budgeted.
The artifact they leave behind
A released drawing package, a signed validation protocol, a runbook your own team can follow. Decide at kickoff. Deciding at the exit interview is how knowledge walks out the door.

We check in at week two, not week twelve
Ramp problems are cheap in week two and expensive in week twelve. Our recruiter calls both sides, separately. The honest answer usually comes from the engineer.
The engineer stays on the KORE1 W-2 for the whole window. We carry payroll, employment taxes, workers’ compensation and unemployment. You direct the work. If anyone on your side is weighing a 1099 route instead, the IRS common-law control test is worth twenty minutes of reading first, because the degree of direction you need over an engineer working on your site to your schedule is close to the exact degree of direction that makes the 1099 classification wrong.

How long does a temporary engineering assignment usually run?
Most land between four and nine months. Shorter than four and the ramp eats too much of what you bought. Longer than about twelve and it is worth asking yourself honestly whether the load is really temporary or whether the budget line just happens to be easier to defend as a contract than as a req. Cycle work like a model-year changeover runs shorter, often 8 to 16 weeks, and repeats. We’d rather scope a short window with an extension clause than a long one you have to cut.
Who employs the engineer, and who carries the liability?

What does it cost compared with hiring someone permanently?
You pay one hourly bill rate that already includes wages, employer taxes, workers’ compensation, benefits and our fee, so there’s no separate placement fee and nothing to true up later. Per hour it is higher than a salaried engineer. Over a nine-month window with no severance, no benefits tail and no recruiting cycle, it usually isn’t. Run both numbers. Can a temporary engineer become a permanent hire?
Often. It should be agreed at the start rather than negotiated in month five. We set conversion terms in the original agreement so that when the load turns out to be permanent the decision is a business call instead of a fee argument. Roughly one in five of our engineering assignments converts. Nobody is more thoroughly vetted than someone who has already worked in your building for six months.
