SAP Staff Augmentation Contract Seats Booked to Your Cutover, Not to a Calendar
ABAP, Basis, FICO and data migration contractors who join your program and leave when their milestone is signed off. For a system that is already live rather than seats on a program, see SAP application management staffing.
Every contractor badge on the board below expires on a program milestone. None of them says six months.

SAP staff augmentation puts contract ABAP developers, Basis administrators, FICO consultants and data migration leads inside your S/4HANA program, under your leads or the SI’s, for exactly as long as their workstream runs. KORE1 sources and places them.

- Staffing the whole team, project manager included, is ERP program team staffing, which maps the week each seat starts. A partner that owns the scope and the outcome is a different purchase, closer to a project bought on a statement of work.
Most S/4HANA programs we get called into already have an SI on them. The partner owns the plan, somebody in finance owns the budget, and around the second month of Explore the custom code analysis comes back with a number nobody had priced. Thousands of Z objects. Nobody budgeted the ABAP hours to touch them.
That’s where we come in. We add the seats the plan is short, at contractor rates rather than partner rates, and keep each one until the work it was brought in for is signed off. It’s the program side of our SAP consultant staffing desk, and the SAP member of KORE1’s staff augmentation services, placing technology people since 2005.
Eight Badges on One S/4HANA Program
Every lanyard in a conversion program’s project room looks about the same. Employees, partner staff, contractors. Only the contractor badges carry an end date, and on a well-run program that date is a milestone, not a month count.
Finance carries its own cutover load on the same milestones, which is the accounting and finance equivalent.

Four badges carry a date. Not one of those dates is a number of months.
Read the bottom lines. The data migration lead leaves the weekend the final load is signed off, because there’s nothing left to load. The FICO consultant outlasts everyone by seven months, through the first year-end close on S/4HANA, since that close is where open items, asset balances and the new general ledger all have to agree at once.
Most augmentation contracts get written for six months and renewed in a hurry. On a program with a fixed cutover weekend, that renewal tends to land in the worst possible week. We write the end date as the milestone and let the calendar follow.

How the ECC Dates Set an SAP Staff Augmentation Contract
Three dates sit under every SAP program plan right now. They decide how long your contractors bill.
- End of 2027Mainstream maintenance ends for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications, which covers SAP ERP 6.0 on its latest three enhancement packages, per SAP’s maintenance strategy.
- End of 2030Optional extended maintenance runs from the start of 2028, for two percentage points on top of your existing maintenance basis. Skip it and you move to customer-specific maintenance.
- 2031 to 2033The SAP ERP, private edition, transition option. On sale from 2028, centered on ECC, SAP HANA only, at an expanded fee, and only for systems already running SAP ERP, private edition prior to the end of 2030.
Read the third one twice. 2033 isn’t a later deadline for everybody. It’s a paid extension on one path, and getting onto that path is a move that has to be finished by 2030 anyway.
The staffing effect is plain. A brownfield program that kicks off this quarter usually goes live in 2028, after mainstream maintenance has already ended, so a contractor booked to a fixed six-month term expires somewhere in the middle of Realize. Book them to the milestone and the dates take care of themselves.
Which SAP Seats Outlive Go-Live
Not every seat on a conversion should be a contractor. The test is whether the work keeps going once the system is live.
| Seat | On the program | After go-live | Our advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| ABAP developer, custom code | Fixing the custom code the analysis flags as incompatible with S/4HANA | Shrinks to enhancements and the odd fix | Contract. Keep your own developer if you have one. |
| Basis consultant | Sandbox and production conversions, downtime planning, system copies | Transports, authorizations and release checks stay with you, RISE or not | Contract for the conversion, an administrator of your own for the years after. |
| FICO consultant | Finance design, open items, asset accounting, the new general ledger | The first year-end close, then ongoing finance support | Contract through the first close, then decide. Some convert. |
| Data migration lead | Mock loads, reconciliation, the cutover load plan | Nothing. The work ends at the final load | Contract, every time. |
| Program and cutover lead | The plan, the risks, the cutover weekend | Ends with hypercare | Usually the SI’s seat. Contract one if you run the program yourself. |
Price matters here too. The ERP consultant rates we publish for 2026 put staffing-firm SAP contractors at $130 to $220 an hour, against $200 to $325 and up at a boutique partner or SI. The partner rate also buys the partner’s delivery risk. Worth it on the seats that own an outcome, wasted on the ones that just need hands.

SAP Staff Augmentation Inside an SI-Led Program
This is where most of our SAP contractors end up, at the same table as the partner’s people. So three questions get settled before anyone badges in.
- Who directs the workYour program lead, or the SI’s workstream lead if you’ve agreed to that in writing. Either works. Both doesn’t.
- Who gets the invoiceYou do, from KORE1, with the contractor on our W-2. Nothing in the partner’s statement of work changes, and nobody’s margin gets stacked on top of ours.
- Who keeps what they learnedYou do. Contractors write their notes, specs and test evidence into your project documentation rather than a partner workspace, so the knowledge is still in the building when the badge comes back.
Partners sometimes bristle at this. Fair enough. Then the custom code count arrives, the partner’s own ABAP bench is booked on somebody else’s conversion, and a contractor who can start inside our 17-day average looks a lot friendlier.
If you’re still deciding who should own which part of the program, we’ve written up how a partner and a staffing firm split the work without stepping on each other.

Contract-to-hire staffingOne workstream
Small project pod
Two to five contractors on one workstream, data migration most often, scoped and billed as a project.
Project staffingNo end date
Permanent SAP owner
The seat that should still exist when the program is over, hired for the system you’ll be running.
Direct hire staffing
Each seat has its own page if you want the detail on skills and pay, from SAP ABAP developers and Basis administrators to FICO consultants and the S/4HANA functional leads. If HR moves in the same program, we staff SuccessFactors consultants too.
None of this is SAP-only. The booking model runs the same way for any platform through ERP staff augmentation, and on the CRM side through Salesforce staff augmentation.

Filling an SAP Staff Augmentation Seat
Five steps, in this order.
- Share the phase chartA program plan is ideal, a one-page phase chart is enough. We want to know where Explore ends and Realize begins before we read a single job description.
- Name the end milestoneOne milestone per seat ends the contract. Final load signed off, go-live plus eight weeks, the first year-end close. That milestone is the term.
- Screen on the conversion they actually ranWhich source release? Which target? Which path? Somebody who ran a brownfield off EHP 7 and somebody who did a greenfield build are not interchangeable, whatever the résumé says.
- Agree who signs the timesheetYour lead or the SI’s, decided before day one and written into the contract. Badge, VPN and SAP user requests go in the same week.
- Roll off on the milestoneWhen the milestone is signed off, the badge comes back, the SAP user is locked and the notes stay in your documentation. Then the contract ends.
Step two feels like paperwork. It’s the step that stops the panicked renewal in month seven, and it’s the one most programs skip.
For step three we lean on the same questions in our SAP consultant interview guide, plus whatever your program has already learned the hard way. Hiring a permanent lead instead? The S/4HANA hiring guide covers that search.
Common Questions
What is SAP staff augmentation, exactly?
Contract SAP specialists added to a program you already run, working under your leads or your SI’s and billed by the hour through a staffing firm. KORE1 handles sourcing, screening and payroll while you direct the work. It adds capacity, not a second delivery team.
How much does an SAP contractor cost per hour?
$130 to $220 an hour covers most staffing-firm SAP contractors in our 2026 rate guide. The top of that band goes to senior S/4HANA finance leads and hard-to-find supply chain people. A boutique partner usually bills $200 to $325 or more for a comparable seat.
Can we plan around the 2033 date instead of 2030?
Probably not. 2033 belongs to the SAP ERP, private edition, transition option, which goes on sale in 2028, runs only on SAP HANA and requires your system to be on private edition before 2031 begins. For everyone else, extended maintenance ends in 2030.
How fast can an SAP contractor start?
Seventeen days is KORE1’s average from intake to hire across IT searches. Narrow combinations take longer, say a FICO consultant who has already closed a year on S/4HANA in your industry, and if your seat is one of those, you’ll hear it on the first call.
Will our SI accept contractors on its program?
Most do, once the reporting line is written down. The contractor answers to whoever directs that workstream, yours or the SI’s, and is employed by KORE1, so the partner’s statement of work doesn’t change. Friction usually comes from scope, not from the people.
Can we keep a contractor after go-live?
Yes, and on Basis and FICO seats it’s often the right call. On contract-to-hire you get to watch someone through cutover and the first close before you make an offer. ABAP and data migration seats rarely need to convert, because that work shrinks once you’re live.
Is this only for S/4HANA conversions?
No. We also staff ECC programs that will run on extended maintenance until 2030, carve-outs and divestitures, and backfills for your own SAP people while they sit on the conversion. The model stays the same. Only the milestone on the badge changes.
Bring the Cutover Date. We’ll Work Back From It.
Tell us your source release, your go-live weekend and the seats you think you’re short. Got a partner staffing chart? Send that too. We’ll come back with which seats to contract, which to keep, and the milestone each contract should end on.
