SAP ABAP Developer Staffing
KORE1 staffs SAP ABAP developers on contract, contract-to-hire, and direct hire across custom code remediation, S/4HANA conversion, CDS and RAP development, and Fiori extensions, averaging 17 days to first qualified submit with 92% twelve-month retention.
Here’s the part most job descriptions get wrong. Hiring an ABAP developer in 2026 is rarely about writing new code. It’s about deciding what happens to code somebody wrote in 2009, never documented, and quietly wired into a month-end close that three departments now depend on without anyone remembering why. SAP’s own custom code adaptation guidance is blunt about how much of the average Z namespace is either dead or incompatible with S/4HANA, which makes judgment the scarce skill on this req rather than syntax. So the search sits closer to SAP consultant staffing than to a general software developer search, even though the title says developer.
Custom code remediation and ATC findings. SPAU and SPDD through a conversion. CDS views, AMDP, and code pushdown. RAP services and Fiori extensions on ABAP Cloud. Screened by recruiters who ask what’s in your Z namespace before they ask how many years you have.
Three objects, three dispositions, three genuinely different hires. Retiring dead code is cheap work and a political fight. Remediation is code archaeology. Rebuilding a core modification as a clean-core extension is the one your budget should worry about, because that pool is small and it is not getting bigger.

Written for the SAP program lead, IT director, or PMO running an ECC landscape with a conversion date sitting on a slide somewhere. Maybe the ATC scan came back with several thousand findings, most of them in objects nobody has opened since the last upgrade, and no one internally has the bandwidth to work the list. Maybe the one developer who understood the pricing exit retires in March. Maybe your integrator quoted a custom code number that made the CFO ask for a second opinion. What follows is what we actually staff in 2026, profile by profile. If the gap is functional rather than in the code layer, our ERP recruiters page covers that side, and SAP S/4HANA consultant staffing covers the conversion program itself.

The ABAP Hire Stopped Being a Maintenance Hire
For roughly fifteen years, ABAP was a keep-the-lights-on skill. Steady, unglamorous, easy to under-budget.
One date changed that. SAP set mainstream maintenance for Business Suite 7 to run through the end of 2027, with an optional extended maintenance period to the end of 2030 carrying a two percentage point premium on the maintenance base, and the same schedule was later aligned to SAP NetWeaver 7.5. A backlog with no deadline became a program with a deadline, a budget line, and a steering committee. Every custom object in the system inherited a question it had never been asked before, which is simply whether it deserves to exist on the other side.
That question is the job now. Not “can you write ABAP,” but “can you read fifteen years of somebody else’s Z-code, work out what the business still depends on, and defend killing the rest in a room where three people will object.” We ran a search last spring for a manufacturer whose ATC scan flagged just over 2,900 objects. Their integrator priced remediation for all of them. Two contract developers spent five weeks on usage data first, cut the working list by more than half, and the savings on that exercise paid for both of them several times over. Nobody wrote a line of new code for the first month.
ABAP Roles We Fill
Six profiles cover most of what crosses our desk. Two of them barely existed on a job board five years ago, and they price accordingly.
Custom Code Remediation Developer
Works the ATC finding list, kills dead objects, fixes field lengths and open SQL, and keeps a defensible record of every decision.
S/4HANA Conversion Developer
Handles modification adjustment during the technical conversion, sandbox through production, including the objects nobody wants to own.
CDS & Code Pushdown Developer
Rewrites report logic as CDS views and AMDP procedures so the database does the work instead of a nested loop in the app server.
RAP & Fiori Extension Developer
Builds clean-core extensions with the RESTful Application Programming model, released APIs, and Fiori Elements front ends.
SAP Integration Developer
OData services, IDoc and proxy work, and the middleware hop into Integration Suite that the last team documented in a spreadsheet.
ABAP Technical Lead
Sets naming and extensibility standards, runs code review, and decides where extensions live so the next upgrade isn’t another archaeology project.

Four Generations of ABAP, and What a Résumé Tells You
ABAP kept its name through four fairly different programming models. Where a candidate’s experience stops is the single most useful thing on the page.
-
Gen 1
Classic procedural ABAP
REPORT · ALV · BDC · USER-EXIT · SAPscript
Reports, batch input, forms, and exits inside SAP GUI. Still the majority of what’s actually running in your ECC system, still worth hiring for, and still the code that quietly generates the invoices your customers receive at the end of every single month. A candidate who stops here is fine for remediation and wrong for anything greenfield.
-
Gen 2
ABAP Objects and the enhancement framework
CLASS · BAdI · ENHANCEMENT-POINT · ABAP Unit
Classes, interfaces, BAdIs instead of modifications, and the first developers who wrote tests. Ask what they did when a BAdI didn’t exist for what the business wanted. The answer separates disciplined from expedient in about thirty seconds.
-
Gen 3
Code pushdown on HANA
CDS · AMDP · SQLScript · SAT · ST05
The model flipped. Instead of pulling rows into the application server and looping, the logic moves down into CDS views and AMDP procedures and the database does the aggregation. Plenty of experienced ABAP developers have read about this and never shipped it, which is a real gap and an easy one to test for.
-
Gen 4
ABAP Cloud and clean core
RAP · released APIs · ADT in Eclipse · BTP
A restricted language scope, only released SAP APIs, and extensions that sit beside the core rather than inside it. Development happens in Eclipse, not SE80. This is the smallest pool by a wide margin and the one every S/4HANA roadmap eventually needs, so plan for a longer search and a higher rate.
None of these generations replaced the one before it in practice, which is exactly why the market is confusing. A working ECC landscape usually contains all four, and the developer who can move between them is worth more than the sum of the individual skills.

Where ABAP Searches Actually Land
Three shapes cover nearly every ABAP req we open.
The remediation surge. You have a conversion date and a finding list, and your internal team is already fully committed to running the business. So you add two to five contract developers for the duration and hand them the objects nobody has touched since the last upgrade. These run six to fourteen months on contract, and they staff faster than any other ABAP search because the skill is common and the work is scoped. When the program needs an owner rather than more hands, that’s an ERP implementation project manager.
The retirement cliff. Quieter, more urgent, and the one clients call about too late. A developer who has been in the system since the original implementation is leaving, and a good chunk of what they know was never written down anywhere a successor could find it. This is nearly always contract-to-hire with an overlap period built in, and we push hard for at least six weeks of overlap. Two weeks is a handoff. Six weeks is a transfer.
The clean-core build. Smallest pool, longest search, highest rate. You’re past the conversion and now you need RAP services and Fiori extensions built the right way so the next upgrade isn’t a project. Genuine ABAP Cloud experience is thin on the ground, so we start sourcing before the req is signed and we’re honest with clients about what a realistic first-submit date looks like. Manufacturers running this alongside a plant rollout usually end up on our manufacturing ERP staffing page too.

What Changed in 2026, and Who You Hire Because of It
Three things moved the ABAP market this year, and only one of them was a product announcement.
Clean core stopped being a slide. SAP has been pushing the ABAP Cloud development model as the default for new extensions for a few years, and 2026 is the year we started seeing it as a hard requirement on client reqs rather than a nice-to-have bullet at the bottom. The practical effect on hiring is that a twenty-year ABAP veteran and a five-year developer who has actually shipped RAP services are now competing for different jobs at similar rates, which nobody enjoys explaining to either of them.
SAP’s own restructuring put experienced people back on the market. We wrote about that in SAP layoffs 2026, and the short version is that the contractor pool got better before it got smaller. Meanwhile AI-assisted code generation landed inside SAP’s own tooling, and here’s the honest read from where we sit. It writes a competent CDS view. It has no idea whether ZFI_DUNN_LETTER01 still matters to your controller, and that judgment is most of the job. Teams weighing platforms at the same time usually compare our SAP FICO, Oracle developer, and ERP recruiter pages in the same week.
How We Engage
Four models. Each one maps to a different point in the ECC to S/4HANA arc.
| Model | Best For | Typical Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Contract | Custom code remediation, SPAU and SPDD adjustment, or surge capacity through a conversion window | 6 to 14 months |
| Contract-to-Hire | Replacing a retiring ABAP developer when you want overlap before you commit headcount | 3 to 6 months, then convert |
| Direct Hire | The permanent ABAP technical lead or in-house developer who owns extensibility standards | Permanent |
| Project-Based | A scoped deliverable such as a custom code inventory, an interface rebuild, or a Fiori extension set | Scoped per engagement |

Why KORE1 for SAP ABAP Staffing
We’ve placed enterprise IT talent since 2005, and ABAP is one of the few technical searches where a keyword screen is actively misleading. Every résumé in the pool says SAP and ABAP. The useful signal is what sits underneath, so our recruiters ask which generation of the language somebody actually works in, what they’ve done during a real conversion, and whether their extension work went into the core or beside it. Our IT staffing desk and our ERP desk sit on the same call for these, because the functional context matters as much as the code.
Every submit clears a recruiter-led screen built around your landscape. A remediation candidate gets asked how they’d decide an object is safe to delete, and the good ones start talking about usage data before you finish the question. A conversion candidate gets asked what they did the first time SPAU handed them a modification whose original author had left the company. A clean-core candidate gets asked which released API they had to work around and what they did instead. Those three questions take four minutes and they sort the pool better than any technical test we’ve tried.
We’ll also tell you when the answer isn’t an ABAP developer. Sometimes the real gap is functional and you need a SAP FICO consultant who can specify properly, because half of what looks like a code problem is a specification problem wearing a code costume. Sometimes it’s an enterprise architect to decide what belongs in SAP at all. If you’re still scoping the role, the salary benchmark tool pulls a current range before you set the req, how to hire an SAP consultant walks the process end to end, and our SAP consultant interview questions cover what to actually ask on the call.
Recruiting is national across 30 plus metros, with desks in Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Diego. ABAP places remote more readily than most enterprise work, since the development environment is remote by nature and this community has been distributed for two decades, though conversion weekends and cutover still pull people onsite. When you’re ready, reach out and we’ll scope the search against your finding list and your conversion date rather than a job title.
Common Questions About SAP ABAP Developer Staffing
What does an SAP ABAP developer cost in 2026?
Contract SAP ABAP developers averaged $69.39 an hour in the United States as of ZipRecruiter’s 2026 data, with most falling between $59 and $80. Salaried ABAP roles run roughly $123,000 at the 25th percentile to $166,500 at the 75th, per the same 2026 dataset. Clean-core and RAP specialists sit above those bands because the pool is small. Our live pay benchmark pulls a current range for your market, and the SAP consultant salary guide plus the S/4HANA consultant salary guide cover the functional side.
Is ABAP a dying skill worth hiring for after 2027?
No, ABAP is the extension language of S/4HANA, and S/4HANA is supported through 2040, so the language outlives the ECC deadline by more than a decade. What’s actually shrinking is classic procedural work inside the core, and what’s growing is clean-core extension development sitting beside it, which are two different labor markets wearing the same four-letter name. Treating those two as one market is the mistake behind most bad ABAP hiring decisions we see, and it’s the reason some teams underpay for the skill they need while overpaying for the one they don’t.
Do we need an ABAP developer or a functional consultant?
A developer builds and changes objects, and a functional consultant decides what the system should do and configures it without writing any. Roughly a third of the ABAP reqs that reach us turn out to be functional problems where somebody already decided the answer was custom code. Ask one question before you post the job. Can standard configuration or a released extension point do this? If nobody in the room knows, the first hire should probably be functional.
How long does it take to fill an ABAP developer role?
Our average is 17 days to first qualified submit across enterprise IT searches. Remediation and conversion developers usually fill in two to three weeks because the skill is common. Direct-hire technical leads run four to seven. ABAP Cloud and RAP specialists take longest, sometimes double, because the qualified pool is small and almost everyone in it is currently placed. Timing note worth planning around. Conversion demand clusters around fiscal year ends, so a January or July start competes with everyone else’s.
Should we use our system integrator’s ABAP developers or hire our own?
Use both, and be clear about what each is for. Your integrator carries delivery risk under a signed statement of work, which matters at cutover. A directly sourced contractor answers to you, costs meaningfully less per hour, and is still there in month nine when the partner has rolled off. The teams that come out of a conversion in the best shape ran the integrator alongside one or two of their own developers who absorbed the decisions instead of watching that knowledge leave at the end of hypercare.
Does SAP certification matter for an ABAP developer?
Less than clients expect, with one exception. SAP’s ABAP Cloud and RAP certifications are genuinely useful signals right now, because the material is recent enough that passing it means somebody sat down with the current model rather than the one they learned in 2011. Classic ABAP certification tells us almost nothing that a code sample doesn’t tell us faster. We weigh conversions completed and objects shipped first. Certification breaks ties.
Can SAP ABAP developers work remotely or offshore?
Yes on remote, and it’s one of the easier enterprise skills to staff that way. Offshore is more nuanced than the rate card suggests. Well-scoped remediation and interface work travels fine, because the specification is the contract and the output is testable. Discovery does not. Deciding what a fifteen-year-old pricing exit is really doing takes conversations with people in your finance and sales teams, in your time zone, and we’ve watched more than one client save on rate and lose it back in rework.
