A Ruby Developer Is Not an Elixir Developer

Elixir looks like Ruby. That resemblance is exactly what gets teams into trouble. The syntax is friendly. The model underneath is not.

A strong Rails engineer writes expressive code, reasons in objects, and moves fast. Hand them a supervision tree and the ground shifts. Same friendly syntax, a completely different way of thinking about a running system. They’ve never designed a GenServer that has to survive its own crash, never reasoned about process isolation or message-passing backpressure, never had to decide what a supervisor should restart and what it should let die on purpose. How We Screen Elixir Talent

Three parts. A design conversation, a live exercise, and a war story. The whole thing runs about 45 minutes. No theater.

The design talk starts with a system they actually built. We ask how they structured supervision, what each GenServer owned, and where they chose to let a process crash instead of catching the error. Then the question that tells us the most. One design decision they’d undo with hindsight. Real depth names something concrete and walks the tradeoff out loud. Memorized depth goes abstract right here, and the resume stops carrying weight.

The live exercise is a genuine OTP bug, written and scored by an Elixir engineer on our side. A GenServer doing slow work inside handle_call and blocking its own mailbox. A worker that quietly dies because nothing supervises it. An ETS table leaking because a caller never cleaned up after itself. We watch how they reason about a live system, not whether they memorized the docs.

The war story is the last gate. A real production incident on the BEAM and what they changed to end it. A message queue that backed up under load. A hot upgrade that went sideways, or a distributed node that split-brained at the worst hour. Elixir vs. Go, and When Neither Fits

Most shops pick a runtime and defend it to the death. We don’t. No dogma here.

Elixir earns its place when the problem is soft real-time and heavily concurrent. Chat and presence, live dashboards, IoT fleets, streaming and settlement pipelines, anything with a flood of connections that mostly sit and wait. The BEAM was built for exactly that shape, which is why Discord and WhatsApp both scaled real-time messaging to hundreds of millions of users on Erlang and Elixir. LiveView is the other quiet advantage. A small team ships interactive UI without standing up a separate JavaScript app, and that shrinks both the codebase and the headcount you have to staff behind it.

Go fits a different shape. CPU-bound services, tight single-binary deploys, heavy CLI tooling, and teams that want a small language with a big standard library get real value from it. Rust wins when you need control over memory and microsecond latency. The BEAM trades raw single-threaded speed for concurrency and fault tolerance, so a number-crunching hot path is not where it earns its keep.

Senior Elixir engineers in the US run roughly $150K to $195K base in 2026, with leads and architects reaching $195K to $235K depending on the metro and whether the role carries team scope. Mid-level engineers with three to five years land closer to $125K to $155K. Contract rates for senior Elixir talent generally fall between $90 and $160 per hour, with OTP and distributed-systems depth sitting near the top of that band.
