Almost every Workday integration req we take is one of two situations, and they are not the same search.
In the first, you’re mid-deployment. Somebody has to sit with the interface inventory, argue with a benefits carrier about file format, and get forty-odd integrations built and tested before the tenant moves. Greenfield work. It rewards speed, a tolerance for vendor calls, and a person who doesn’t mind writing the same document transformation six slightly different ways because six carriers each want something slightly different. Six carriers, six formats.
In the second, you went live two years ago, the system integrator packed up, and something that has run clean every Tuesday night since 2024 has started failing. Nobody who built it still works there. The documentation is a SharePoint folder with three files in it, one of which is a screenshot. That job is archaeology before it’s engineering, and the person who’s great at the first situation is often mediocre at this one because they’ve never had to reverse a stranger’s assembly at 6 a.m. with payroll running at noon. Payroll doesn’t wait.

What “Workday Integration” Actually Means on a Req
Four tool families sit under one phrase. A candidate can be excellent at one and useless at another, and a resume rarely tells you which.
Workday Studio
Stateful, multi-step orchestration with real error handling, retries, and routing. XSLT, MVEL, and the Java expression library. This is genuine software engineering inside an Eclipse-based IDE, and it’s the thinnest talent pool on the platform. Nothing else is close.
Enterprise Interface Builder
Bulk inbound and outbound loads. Spreadsheet templates for mass data changes, scheduled file drops over SFTP, and most of the heavy lifting during data conversion and cutover. Fast to learn. Easy to overestimate on a resume.
Core Connectors & Cloud Connect
Delivered connectors for Benefits, Payroll, Time Tracking, Talent, and named partners. Configuration plus document transformation rather than code. No IDE required. Where most “integration experience” on a resume actually lives.
Payroll Interfaces
Effective-change and payroll interface feeds out to ADP, Alight, Ceridian, and the rest. Highest stakes of the four, because a bad mapping doesn’t show up in a log. It shows up in somebody’s paycheck. Nobody forgets that one.

How We Screen Workday Integration Consultants
Three parts. A build conversation, a failed-run teardown, and one question about security. Roughly forty-five minutes.
The build conversation starts somewhere deliberately unglamorous, which is moving a working integration from Sandbox into Production. Strong candidates immediately start talking about the integration system user, whether the credentials exist in the target tenant, what happens to the launch parameters, and who owns the SFTP key on the vendor side. Weak candidates describe the migration wizard. Then they stop. Then we ask them to explain, out loud, when they’d reach for a document transformation on a Core Connector instead of building a Studio assembly. The honest answer is “almost always, if it’ll fit,” because Studio is expensive to maintain and half the people who reach for it are doing it because it’s the thing they know. Habit, not judgment. Candidates who say that unprompted tend to be the ones who’ve had to support their own work for more than a year.
The teardown is a real integration that failed in production, written up by an engineer on our side and scored against a rubric. One version is a carrier feed that ran green for eleven months and then started dropping a handful of employees every cycle, which turned out to be a date-effective sequencing problem rather than anything wrong with the transformation. Another is a payroll interface that produced a clean file the vendor rejected on encryption. We’re watching for whether they check the event log and the output before they start rewriting logic. Plenty of people rewrite first.
Last gate is one security question. What permissions would you give the integration system user. Practitioners answer with the smallest set that works and then name specific domain security policies. People who’ve only ever inherited someone else’s setup say “whatever it needs,” and that answer has cost clients audit findings. Auditors notice.

Integration Consultant, Functional Consultant, or HRIS Analyst?
Three titles that overlap on paper and almost never overlap in practice. Worth settling before the req goes out.
A functional Workday consultant owns configuration inside a module. Business processes, security groups, condition rules, and the design decisions that make HCM or Financials behave the way your policy says it should. Brilliant at that. Usually unable to debug a Studio assembly. An HRIS analyst is your side of the table permanently, owning tenant health, release readiness, reporting requests, and the long tail of “can you just add a field.” Integration people build and maintain the pipes between Workday and everything else, which means half their job happens in systems Workday doesn’t own. Somebody else’s systems, somebody else’s rules.
The mistake we see most often costs about six weeks. A team hires a strong functional consultant, assumes integrations are included, then discovers in UAT that the person can configure a Core Connector and cannot troubleshoot why the carrier is rejecting the file. The consultant didn’t fail. The req did.
Adjacent searches land nearby often enough to name. When Workday is one endpoint in a much larger integration estate, the right hire is frequently an API and integration architect. Data conversion and reporting pipelines pull from ETL developer staffing. Benefits-heavy feeds sometimes need a benefits administrator alongside the engineer, because somebody has to answer the carrier’s questions. A Workday integration consultant builds and maintains the data pipes between Workday and everything else, using Studio, EIB, Core Connectors, and payroll interfaces like PECI. Day to day that means designing new interfaces, mapping fields to a vendor spec, transforming output with XSLT, scheduling and monitoring runs, and debugging the ones that fail. A large share of the job is vendor management, because the other end of most integrations belongs to a benefits carrier, a payroll provider, or a bank that has its own opinions about file format.

What’s the difference between Workday Studio and an EIB?
An EIB moves data in bulk on a simple path. Studio orchestrates complex, multi-step, stateful integrations with branching, error handling, and retries. If your requirement is a scheduled outbound file with straightforward field mapping, an EIB or a Core Connector will usually do it and will be far cheaper to maintain. Studio earns its cost when an integration has to call several services, transform between formats, handle partial failures, and recover on its own. Reaching for Studio when an EIB would work is one of the more expensive habits in this space, and it’s a thing we screen for. Cost follows complexity.
Do candidates need Workday Pro Integrations certification?
Usually not. Treating it as a hard filter will shrink your pool for no benefit. Workday Pro certification is granted through partner organizations and customer programs, so plenty of excellent independent integration engineers never had an employer who could sponsor it. We treat it as a floor rather than a signal. What predicts performance is production support history, meaning integrations the person built and then had to keep alive for a year or more, and the ability to talk through a specific failure without reaching for generalities.

Should we hire contract or direct hire for Workday integrations?
Deployments almost always want contract, and steady state almost always wants an employee. A build phase has a hard end date and a spike in work that doesn’t repeat, which is exactly what contract exists for. Once you’re live, integrations become an ongoing ownership problem rather than a project, and rotating contractors through that job is how tribal knowledge disappears.
