Every number on this page is what a client pays per hour. Wages, payroll taxes and California’s required costs are already baked in. A figure can go straight into a budget line. No second pass.
Bay Area hiring managers ask one question before any other. What will this seat cost me per hour? Fair question. Nobody has the market figure until the first quote lands. And quotes vary. That gap is what this page closes. KORE1 has placed technology talent in California since 2005, and the rates below are the pricing side of what our IT staffing in the San Francisco Bay Area team does every week, under the contract staffing terms that cover all of our IT staffing services.
One caveat up front. Every Bay Area row below is modeled, not observed. That’s deliberate. Why, and what it changes, comes further down.
What Does a Contract IT Worker Cost per Hour in the San Francisco Bay Area?
Twelve roles, one row apiece. Each range spans the 25th to the 75th percentile, the band where the middle half of bills fall. Forty hours a week makes 13 weeks 520 hours and 26 weeks 1,040.

How to read it. Every row is modeled. It starts from BLS OEWS May 2025 wages, adds the 24% employer burden and applies the bill bands KORE1 sees on its own placements. No Bay Area role has five KORE1 placements behind it yet, so none is labeled observed.

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in the San Francisco Bay Area?
Roughly double. A longer term doesn’t lower the hourly rate. So 26 weeks costs about twice what 13 does, and the only lever left is the level of experience you ask for.
A mid-level software engineer at the Bay Area median comes to about $74,100 for a quarter and $148,200 for two. A Level 2 help desk tech comes to $36,800, then $73,500. Same logic, smaller scale.
Price a small platform pod. One senior and one mid-level software engineer plus a mid-level systems administrator, each at the median, add up to about $213,400 for 13 weeks and $426,800 for 26. That’s the number a finance partner actually signs. Worth knowing early.
Run the term to 26 weeks and you reach 1,040 hours, the threshold at which a KORE1 contractor can join your payroll with no conversion fee. Choose the longer term and the decision date is already on the calendar. Monthly math for more roles sits in the staff augmentation cost breakdown, and the conversion path is laid out under contract-to-hire staffing.
How Fast Can a Contractor Start in the San Francisco Bay Area, and How Long Do Assignments Run?
From signed offer to first shift, the median is three days across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts. Beyond that, spend climbs as long as the work does. Here’s the picture.
- Software engineer, senior13 weeks $85,800 · 26 weeks $171,600
- Software engineer, mid13 weeks $74,100 · 26 weeks $148,200
- ERP consultant, mid13 weeks $55,500 · 26 weeks $110,900
- Help desk, Level 213 weeks $36,800 · 26 weeks $73,500
Every line slopes the same way. Up. Weekly spend never changes, so the total depends on how long the work lasts, not on the rate. KORE1’s median assignment is 116 days, just under 17 weeks, and the IT median is 136 days, almost 20. A 13-week budget therefore tends to need a second quote once the project hits its first real snag, and on IT work the median job already runs past 19 weeks. Contracts end when the project does. Not before.
Speed matters too. With three days between a signed offer and a first shift, a 13-week budget buys nearly 13 weeks of work. Not ten.

What Is Inside a San Francisco Bay Area Bill Rate?
Devin Hornick, a KORE1 partner, starts by correcting the vocabulary. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.”
His worked example is the cleanest way to see it. A contractor paid $100 an hour carries California’s 24% burden, which puts the seat at $124 before the firm earns anything, and a bill rate somewhere around $150 to $160 is typical from there. Hence the question worth asking any vendor. What’s under the percentage? Applied to wages alone it skips the burden, and that’s how two quotes for one person end up far apart. Both can be honest.
The Bay Area layers sit inside that gap, and none of them shows up as its own line on an invoice.
Paid sick leave
California’s floor is five days or 40 hours a year for every W2 contractor, per the Labor Commissioner’s guidance. San Francisco adds an ordinance of its own, accruing an hour for every 30 worked with a 72-hour cap at most employers, per the city’s Office of Labor Standards Enforcement. Ask which applies.
Daily overtime
Overtime in California is a daily rule. Hours past eight are paid at time and a half and past 12 at double time, as the DIR overtime FAQ explains. Weekend cutovers trip both.
State unemployment
New California employers pay UI at 3.4% plus ETT at 0.1%, both on the first $7,000 of a worker’s wages, according to the EDD’s rate page.
Federal unemployment
FUTA is 6.0% of the first $7,000 in wages, cut to a net 0.6% once the state credit applies (IRS Topic 759). California carries an unpaid federal unemployment loan, so that credit may shrink for 2026. The Labor Department’s potential reduction list turns final on November 10, 2026.
Payroll tax and insurance
Employers pay 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $184,500 and 1.45% Medicare, per IRS Publication 15. Workers’ compensation and liability coverage ride on top of that.
Benefits KORE1 chooses to carry
Dental and vision. KORE1 pays both in full.
Compare quotes only on that basis. Anything else isn’t fair. Vendors that bill per seat per month can be restated hourly using our guide to pricing models for staff augmentation, and the contractor burden rate page walks through the 24% one layer at a time.
How Do San Francisco Bay Area IT Contractor Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?
Same method, same levels, one variable. The wage area.
| Role and level | Bay Area | National | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Help desk, Level 2 | $71 | $49 | +$22 (45%) |
| Systems administrator, mid | $103 | $79 | +$24 (30%) |
| Network engineer, mid | $127 | $106 | +$21 (20%) |
| Software engineer, mid | $143 | $108 | +$35 (32%) |
| ERP / NetSuite consultant, mid | $107 | $84 | +$23 (27%) |
| IT project manager, mid | $107 | $81 | +$26 (32%) |
| Controller, mid | $161 | $127 | +$34 (27%) |
Level 2 help desk shows the widest premium, about 45%. Software engineers and project managers sit near 32%, and network engineers have the narrowest at about 20%. Not small on any line.
Other metros give the figure context. The Bay Area mid software engineer median of $143 tops Seattle ($128), Boston ($128), New York ($127) and Los Angeles ($124), and sits $37 above Dallas-Fort Worth ($106). Not close. Every metro side by side lives in our IT contractor rates by city comparison, the national tables are in tech contractor hourly rates for 2026, and the Southern California versions of this page are IT contractor rates in Los Angeles and IT contractor rates in San Diego.
Remote talent from a lower-cost state can narrow the gap on engineering seats, but only where the work doesn’t need someone in the building, and even then a quote can land anywhere between the Bay Area figure and the national one. Each $35 of hourly gap on a mid software engineer is $36,400 over 1,040 hours. Support doesn’t travel. Anything that touches hardware usually has to be onsite. If you’re budgeting one, our monthly help desk seat cost page does the conversion.

Why Every San Francisco Bay Area Rate Here Is Modeled
Honest labeling costs us a little polish. KORE1 has recruited in California for two decades, but most of our placements are in Southern California, and no Bay Area role has reached the five placements it takes to publish an observed number. So every cell above is a model. Every cell says so. Nothing hidden.
A model isn’t a guess. It starts from what the Bureau of Labor Statistics measures for each occupation in the Bay Area, adds the 24% burden and applies the bill bands our own placements show at that cost level. Think of it as the market’s center of gravity. Your quote will orbit it.
What moves a quote? Onsite days in the city versus remote. A scarce stack such as Kubernetes or Snowflake on a systems or data seat. A tight start date that narrows the pool. And a req that asks for a senior while budgeting for a mid-level, which we’ll flag before the quote goes out. Admins arrive through our systems administrator recruiters, network seats through network engineer staffing and delivery leads through IT project manager staffing. National seat-level pricing for related roles sits in project manager contract rates, business analyst contract bill rates and cloud engineer contract bill rates.
Where These San Francisco Bay Area Contract Rates Apply
The index publishes one Bay Area rate set, so it covers the whole region. Onsite days and the commute shape a quote more than the neighborhood does. Bridge traffic included.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in the San Francisco Bay Area: Which Costs Less?
Across a full year the three routes cost closer to each other than buyers expect. Timing and reversibility are what differ.

Direct hire fees
Devin runs the numbers on a $100,000 salary. A 20% fee is $20,000, and spread over 1,040 hours it equals what a bill rate would have carried anyway. His verdict. “There’s really no savings in going direct hire versus contract.”
The real difference is flexibility. Contract buys speed and room to scale up or down, a full-time hire buys stability and legacy knowledge, and neither is free, so the honest comparison is what each one lets you reverse after the first quarter. A contract has no replacement guarantee, and we say so plainly. The promise is simpler. Your contractor arrives on time and gets paid on Fridays, and conversion is free once they pass 1,040 hours. Only direct hire has the 60-day guarantee. Pick by what you may need to undo. The math is in contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost.
How These San Francisco Bay Area Numbers Are Built
The starting point is the Bay Area hourly wage for each occupation in the BLS OEWS wage tables for May 2025, read at the 25th percentile for junior and Level 1, the median for mid and Level 2, and the 75th for senior and Level 3. Next comes a 24% employer burden. Last, the bill-to-cost range KORE1 observes on its own placements at that cost level. Three steps.
How do web data and placement data fit together? Robert Ardell of KORE1 puts it this way. “Scrape the web for generic stuff too… what’s the average data engineer with three years of experience… on an hourly basis… and then we use our own personal data from our contractors to complement that.” The rows map to occupation codes 15-1232 (help desk), 15-1241 (network engineers), 15-1244 (systems administrators), 15-1252 (software engineers), 15-1211 (ERP consultants and business systems analysts), 13-1082 (project managers), 13-2011 (accountants) and 11-3031 (controllers). Eight codes.
Three kinds of deal stay out of the index because they would pull medians toward arrangements unlike a typical Bay Area contract. Those are payroll-only setups, offshore or corp-to-corp engagements, and bill-to-pay spreads outside the normal range. The 2026-Q4 version took effect October 16, 2026, and the next refresh lands in January 2027. Quarterly. The full recipe is on how the index is built.
