Every integration on your estate has an owner on paper. Ask who that is out loud, in a room, and watch what happens.
The platform team says it belongs to the application team. The application team says it came with the vendor. Nobody is lying. The vendor says the API works exactly as documented, and the vendor is right, because the thing that broke isn’t in the documentation and never was.
MuleSoft’s 2026 Connectivity Benchmark Report, built on responses from 1,050 IT leaders, found the average organization now runs 957 applications with only 27% of them connected. The same survey puts 36% of IT team time into designing, building and testing custom integrations. Those two numbers sit oddly next to each other. Read them again. A third of the department’s hours are going into connections, and roughly seven hundred applications still aren’t talking to anything.
Nobody gets promoted for an integration that worked. They get paged for one that didn’t.
So the seat stays open. Or it quietly gets folded into a backend job description that never once uses the word, which is how a company ends up with three people who each own a third of an interface and no one who owns the whole thing. What the Dashboard Said, and What Was Actually Happening

Every hop reported success, because every hop did succeed. Green meant nothing here. No dashboard was ever going to catch that. The person who does catch it is rarely the one who can draw the architecture on a whiteboard, it is the one who got burned by this exact shape two jobs ago and now instruments the single field nobody else thought was load bearing.

The Job Is the Contract, Not the Connection
Connecting two systems once is an afternoon. Any competent backend developer can do it, and most already have. That part is easy.
What takes a career is everything after. What the system does when the downstream is dark for four hours and you have already accepted the message. Whether replaying yesterday’s file creates duplicate invoices or corrects them. Which of two systems is allowed to be the source of truth for a customer address when both were edited inside the same minute. How anybody finds out that a partner quietly deprecated a field, given that nothing throws an error and every call still returns a 200.
That list is idempotency, ordering, backpressure, replay and reconciliation. None of it shows up in a demo.
Demos always work.
The tooling underneath is real too. REST and GraphQL, brokers like Kafka, RabbitMQ or SQS, an iPaaS such as Boomi, MuleSoft or Workato, change data capture off the database, and the SFTP job somebody wrote in 2015 that still moves the single most important file in the company.
Ask about that file. Somebody always knows which one it is. Usually with a grimace.

A field changes shape upstream and nothing errors. You need someone who writes contract tests, not someone who writes mappings.

You Aren’t Competing With Other Staffing Firms. You’re Competing With Telecom.
Indeed’s August 2026 data puts the national average base salary for an integration engineer at $131,396, drawn from roughly two thousand postings, with a low of $84,761 and a high of $203,688. Glassdoor lands nearby at $136,201 average total pay, with the typical band running $107,438 to $174,403.
The spread is the real finding. Something like a hundred and twenty thousand dollars separates the floor of that range from the ceiling, for one job title. That is not a market. That is four different jobs wearing the same words on a req.
Then look at who pays. Glassdoor’s industry medians put Media and Communication at $142,713 and Telecommunications at $137,609, both of them sitting comfortably above Information Technology at $129,655, which is not the ranking most hiring managers expect to see when they open a benchmarking report. Integration talent gets paid best by companies whose product is itself a connection, which means a mid-market manufacturer posting at the IT median is quietly bidding under two industries that will happily take the same person.
Money isn’t usually the blocker though. The title is. Renaming a req from Systems Analyst to Integration Engineer moves applicant quality more than the last ten thousand dollars does, and we see that on this role more than on almost any other we recruit. Ask This, Not That
Every candidate can name the tools. The separation lives in the failure stories, so we work through those before a resume ever reaches you.
Which integration platforms have you worked with?
Tell me about data that was wrong for days before anyone noticed. How did it finally surface?
Do you know Kafka?
Your consumer processes the same message twice. Walk me through what you built to make that safe.
Have you worked with REST APIs?
A vendor changes a field type without notice. What in your setup catches it, and how fast?
Can you handle high volume?
The downstream is down six hours and messages keep arriving. What does your system do with them?
Are you comfortable being on call?
Describe the worst integration incident you owned. What did you change so it couldn’t happen twice?
The answers separate fast. Somebody who has lived through it gets specific inside a sentence, usually with a number attached. Somebody who hasn’t describes a diagram. You hear it immediately.

One Seat, a Cutover Crew, or Somebody to Own It for Good
Integration work usually arrives in a shape. A migration, an acquisition, a platform swap, a partner onboarding push. Contract staffing covers the shape and ends when the shape does, which for this role tends to run three to nine months, long enough for somebody to learn an estate properly and short enough that nobody has to justify a permanent headcount against a project that was always going to finish.
Contract-to-hire earns its keep when nobody internally can technically evaluate the person. Clients change their minds in week three more often than they expect to, usually after watching how somebody handled a partner outage, and that is not information an interview loop was ever going to produce, which matters more on this role than on almost any other engineering seat we fill. Nobody interviews well for the bad night.
If the estate is permanent, the seat should be. Direct hire is the right call once you’ve accepted that integration is a standing function and not a project with an end date.

What does an integration engineer actually do?
An integration engineer builds and runs the connections between systems, then owns what happens when those connections fail. That covers API interfaces, message queues, retries, idempotency, reconciliation, and the alerting that catches a bad change before a customer does.
Day to day it looks less like building and more like defending. A vendor ships a release, a field changes shape, a batch half-applies overnight. The build work is real, and on a good quarter it takes most of the calendar, but the reason the seat exists at all is the other kind of week, the one where a change nobody told you about has been quietly corrupting records since Tuesday and every dashboard you own is still green. That week decides the hire.
Integration engineer or integration architect. Which one do we need?
If you know what should be built and only need it built and run, hire the engineer. Forty connections with no agreement on the target is an architect problem first. Hiring the wrong one wastes a quarter.
Most mid-market companies need the engineer, not the architect. Architects earn their money on estates big enough that the design decisions outlive the people making them. If that’s you, start with an integration architect instead.
How much does an integration engineer cost in 2026?
Indeed’s August 2026 national average base salary is $131,396, with a range from $84,761 to $203,688. Glassdoor puts average total pay at $136,201 and the typical band at $107,438 to $174,403. Contract rates generally run $75 to $130 an hour.
Your industry moves the number more than your zip code does. By a lot. Telecommunications and media both pay above the IT median for the identical skill set, so a manufacturer or a healthcare system benchmarking against other manufacturers is reading the wrong comparison set.
Can our backend team just absorb this work?
Most teams do at first. It stops working once integration failures start arriving faster than feature work can absorb them, which most teams hit somewhere between fifteen and twenty five active connections.
The tell isn’t volume though. It’s who gets interrupted. When the same two senior developers are the only people on the team who understand three particular interfaces, and both of them now get pulled into every incident regardless of what the sprint said they would be doing, you have already been paying for this role. Just out of the roadmap instead of out of headcount.
How long does an integration engineer search usually take?
Seventeen days is our IT desk average to a vetted candidate. A well-scoped integration search then closes in roughly another three to six weeks. Demanding one named iPaaS plus one named vertical adds about two.
The job description moves this more than the budget does. Name the real stack, then name the two systems that keep breaking, and you buy back more weeks than a ten thousand dollar bump ever would. We’re mid-migration and everything is on fire. Contract or permanent?
Contract, starting now, and start them on documentation rather than on the fire. How your interfaces are configured today lives half in the old middleware and half in one person’s head, and a cutover erases the second half.
Think about what an interface actually encodes. Not just a field map, but every workaround somebody added for a case the vendor never handled, and the reason each one exists. That reasoning is almost never written down. It lives with whoever was on the project, and the moment they roll off, the only remaining record is the behaviour of a system you are about to switch off. Pay for the overlap. It is cheaper than archaeology.
Do we need someone who already knows our specific iPaaS?
Usually not. A strong integration engineer picks up a new platform in two to four weeks, because the hard parts are error handling, ordering and reconciliation, and those transfer completely. Platform syntax doesn’t.
Two exceptions. Deep MuleSoft or Boomi estates with years of accumulated custom components genuinely do reward platform depth, because the institutional weirdness in a seven-year-old integration layer takes longer to learn than the platform itself ever did. So does anything sitting on a legacy broker where the remaining talent pool shrinks every year. Everywhere else, screening for the platform is how good candidates get filtered out for the wrong reason.
