IT contractor rates in Cincinnati run $42 to $51 an hour for a Level 2 help desk technician (median $47) and $86 to $103 for a mid software engineer (median $96), per KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: November 2, 2026

Thirteen weeks of that help desk seat budgets at about $24,500. The engineer, about $50,100. Both figures assume 40-hour weeks, and wages, employer taxes and the staffing firm’s own costs are already in them.

Ryan McManus of KORE1 describes the buyer this page is for. Someone asks a specific question, with a role, a level, a city and a contract length attached, and the page that answers with real data gets the citation and the inquiry. Fair test. So here’s the table, which sits beside our IT staffing in Cincinnati work and prices on the same contract staffing terms as any other IT staffing engagement KORE1 has run since 2005.

The short version? Cincinnati undercuts the country on software and security. It doesn’t on infrastructure. Every line below is modeled. Each row says so.

Modeled lines start from BLS OEWS May 2025 wages for the Cincinnati, OH-KY-IN metro, add a 24% employer burden, then apply the bill bands KORE1 sees on its own placements. This version of the index carries no Cincinnati-only observed line, since it prints one only with five recent KORE1 placements behind a role.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Cincinnati?

Twice as much. The index applies one hourly rate to both lengths, so 26 weeks doubles 13 weeks, rounding aside. No volume break.

Level 1 help desk budgets $19,000 and $37,900. A senior software engineer runs $56,900 and $113,800. Same math either way. Support seats often get priced by the month instead, and IT support cost per month shows that version.

Requests here usually arrive as a small crew. Picture a retail analytics group downtown adding a mid software engineer, a QA engineer and an IT project manager for one release. Thirteen weeks of those three comes to about $125,600. Twenty-six comes to about $251,200. Somebody on the steering committee will ask about that number in week ten, so it helps to have seen it first. Contract development team cost prices a fuller mix, the staff augmentation cost breakdown runs the math by the month, and finance seats sit with more KORE1 staffing in Cincinnati.

There’s one more reason. Twenty-six weeks lands on 1,040 hours, and after that a KORE1 contractor can move to your payroll with no conversion fee. Contract-to-hire staffing starts from the same idea.

Start and length

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Cincinnati, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Five points on a typical contract, from KORE1 placement records across every market we staff. These medians are company-wide, not Cincinnati-only.

  1. Day 3Median first shift after a signed offer, from 1,997 contract starts
  2. Week 13520 hours, the 3-month column in the table
  3. Day 116Median assignment across all roles, 1,887 that ended
  4. Day 136Median for IT roles, 410 of those assignments
  5. Week 261,040 hours, and conversion carries no fee
Drawn to scale across 26 weeks on wide screens. The shaded stretch runs between the two assignment medians, and the orange mark is the 1,040-hour conversion point.

Thirteen weeks tends to run out before IT work does. The middle IT assignment ends somewhere in week 19 or 20, which puts a one-quarter budget back in front of finance while the contractor is still mid-project. Awkward timing. Fund the likely length now. Let the work finish early if it can.

Start time barely matters. At three days from signature to first shift, nearly all 520 hours go to work, and how fast a contractor can start covers what slows that down.

What Is Inside a Cincinnati Bill Rate?

Words first. Devin Hornick, a partner at KORE1, is blunt about it. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.”

Then his arithmetic. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.” A quoted markup often leaves that burden out, so ask what the quoted number covers. Ask every firm.

Federal payroll tax is the same on both banks of the river. State rules aren’t. This metro has three sets of them.

  • Three unemployment wage bases

For 2026, state unemployment tax covers the first $9,000 per worker in Ohio, $9,500 in Indiana and $12,000 in Kentucky (EY state wage base table). Each employer’s rate differs.

  • Ohio workers’ comp comes from the state

Ohio is one of four states where private insurers can’t write this coverage. Employers buy from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation or qualify to self-insure, under Ohio Revised Code 4123.35. Cross the bridge and it’s a different market.

  • No state sick leave accrual

None of the three states makes private employers offer paid sick leave (NCSL state leave laws), so nothing accrues. Nothing to price.

  • The city tax is withheld, not billed

Cincinnati taxes wages earned inside the city at 1.8%, nonresidents included. The worker pays it. So it sits outside the burden. The employer of record still has to withhold it.

  • Federal payroll tax, the largest piece

Social Security is 6.2% to $184,500 and Medicare 1.45% (IRS Publication 15). FUTA is 0.6% net on the first $7,000 (IRS Topic 759).

The index applies a flat 24% burden anyway. On purpose. A single figure keeps a Mason seat, a Covington seat and every other metro comparable, even though the real state costs differ. Liability coverage sits inside it too, and KORE1 pays contractors’ dental and vision in full. Our contractor burden rate page breaks the 24% into its lines.

How Do Cincinnati Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?

Rookwood Pottery started in Cincinnati in 1880 and went on to make architectural tile, so this chart lays each rate as a course of tile. One tile is $10. The dark line is the U.S. median, and the hatched stretch is how far short of it a Cincinnati course stops.

Median contract bill rate per hour, Cincinnati versus United States, KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4, drawn as bars from $0 where one tile equals $10 and a line marks the U.S. median
Role and levelCincinnatiU.S.GapHourly bill rate from $0, one tile = $10
Software engineer, senior$109$131−$22 (−17%)
Software engineer, mid$96$108−$12 (−11%)
Security analyst or engineer, mid$91$102−$11 (−11%)
Controller, mid$117$127−$10 (−8%)
IT project manager, mid$76$81−$5 (−6%)
Accountant, senior$83$87−$4 (−5%)
Help desk, Level 2$47$49−$2 (−4%)
ERP / NetSuite consultant, mid$82$84−$2 (−2%)
Network engineer, mid$106$106$0
Systems administrator, mid$81$79+$2 (+3%)

Software is the gap. A mid engineer bills $96 here against $108 nationally, and a senior bills $109 against $131. That senior gap is $22 on every hour of the contract, the widest dollar difference in the chart, and security follows at $91 against $102.

Infrastructure doesn’t follow. Mid network engineers match the country at $106, and systems administrators bill $2 over it at $81. Help desk and ERP land within $2. So a Cincinnati budget built on a flat regional discount will come up short on exactly the seats that keep the lights on. The wage data shows that split without explaining it. We won’t guess.

At $96, Cincinnati has the lowest mid-level software median of the 23 metros in the index. Milwaukee contract rates come next at $98. Other metros price the same mid engineer at $105 in Atlanta, $106 in Philadelphia, $107 in Chicago and $127 in New York. Why Every Cincinnati Rate in the Table Is Modeled

Honest answer? Most KORE1 placements are in Southern California, and the index only prints an observed line once a role has five recent placements behind it. So Cincinnati runs on the model for now.

The numbers aren’t soft. The federal wage survey sets the base for this exact metro, KORE1 billing history sets the spread on top, and the same steps produce every other city in the index, which means each median is a fair estimate of where a quote centers before anyone has read the req. Your req moves it.

Four things push it. Five days a week downtown costs more than a hybrid seat in Blue Ash. Scarce skills matter, like SAP on a consumer-goods supply chain or a bank’s core platform. So does a rushed start. And a title that says senior on a budget that says mid gets flagged by us before any number goes out.

By specialty, plant and product engineers come through engineering staffing in Cincinnati. Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Cincinnati: Which Costs Less?

Over a full year, price rarely settles it. Speed and how easily you can undo the decision usually do.

  • Billed by the hour

    Contract

The seat ends when the work ends, and a contractor can convert free after 1,040 hours.

    How contract staffing works
  • Trial first

    Contract-to-hire

The hourly rate applies during the trial, and 207 of 552 KORE1 placements converted, or 37.5%.

    Contract-to-hire vs direct hire cost
  • Single fee

    Direct hire

You pay 20% of first-year base salary once, and a 60-day replacement guarantee comes with it.

    Direct hire staffing

On a recorded KORE1 call, Devin Hornick ran the numbers on a $100,000 hire. The placement fee is $20,000, and spread across 1,040 contract hours, that lands close to what a bill rate carries anyway. “There’s really no savings in going direct hire versus contract,” he said.

Risk is the real difference. Contract has no replacement guarantee, and it’s better to read that here than to learn it in a dispute. You get speed. The seat starts fast and stops cleanly. Direct hire flips the trade, with a longer search and a fee due up front, but also a 60-day guarantee and someone who stays after the project closes.

Method

How These Cincinnati Numbers Are Built

Three steps. The hourly wage comes from the May 2025 BLS OEWS wage tables for the Cincinnati, OH-KY-IN metro, at the 25th percentile for junior and Level 1, the median for mid and Level 2, and the 75th for senior and Level 3. We multiply that by 1.24 for employer burden. Then the bill-to-cost range from KORE1 placements at a similar cost level turns it into a bill range, which is why a line can run wider or narrower than its neighbor even when the two medians look close.

Occupation codes behind the table are 15-1232 for help desk, 15-1244 for systems administrators, 15-1241 for network engineers, 15-1212 for security, 15-1252 for software engineers, 15-1253 for QA, 15-1243 for data engineers, 15-1211 for ERP consultants and business systems analysts, 13-1111 for business analysts, 13-1082 for project managers, 13-2051 for financial analysts, 13-2011 for accountants and 11-3031 for controllers.

What stays out? Payroll-only arrangements, offshore and corp-to-corp work, and deals with an unusual bill-to-pay relationship. Version 2026-Q4 took effect October 16, 2026, Cincinnati joined it on November 2, and the next update is due January 2027. The full write-up is how the index is built.

Questions

$96 is the Cincinnati median for a mid-level contract software engineer, with most quotes between $86 and $103. Thirteen weeks comes to about $50,100. Senior engineers bill a $109 median in a $103 to $118 range, against national medians of $108 and $131.

What does a contract systems administrator cost in Cincinnati?

A mid-level systems administrator in Cincinnati bills $72 to $92 an hour, with an $81 median. That runs $2 over the U.S. figure, one of the few seats here that does. Expect roughly $41,900 for a quarter and $83,800 for two.

Are IT contractors cheaper in Cincinnati than the national average?

Some are. Senior software engineers bill $22 an hour under the U.S. median and mid security seats $11 under, but a mid network engineer matches it at $106. Check the seat first. A flat regional discount won’t hold.
