Android developers working in the United States earn a base salary of $110,000 to $180,000 in 2026. Most senior app engineers sign between $140,000 and $165,000 before any bonus or equity gets counted. Platform and automotive specialists clear $215,000. Big-tech total compensation runs past $340,000. The headline averages published on salary sites sit well below all of that, and the reason is specific.
Here is the fastest way to see the problem. Pull up Glassdoor and search “Android Developer.” You get $106,403. Now search “Senior Android Developer” on the same site, same afternoon. You get $160,285, built on 697 reported salaries. Fifty-four thousand dollars, one site, one word of difference in the query.
Most hiring managers never run the second search. They budget off the first one, post the req, and then spend eleven weeks wondering where everybody went. Nobody is missing. The number was.
My job at KORE1 puts me between clients setting these bands and the recruiting desks trying to fill against them, so I watch the disconnect happen in real time. Fair warning about my incentives. We run an Android developer staffing desk inside our broader IT staffing services practice, and a higher band means a bigger invoice on our side. Read every number below with that in mind. In exchange I have put two sections in this guide that argue you out of spending money with us, including one that says a lot of Android reqs should be contract instead of direct hire. Those cost us the bigger fee. They also tend to be the reason a client is still a client in year six.

What Android Developers Actually Get Paid in 2026
An Android developer builds software that runs on Android, written mostly in Kotlin now, assembled in Android Studio against the Android SDK and the Jetpack libraries. That is the tidy definition. It also describes maybe sixty percent of the people carrying the title. Maybe.
The rest are doing something the definition misses entirely. Some work below the app layer on the platform itself, in C++ and JNI, touching hardware abstraction layers and SELinux policy. Some build infotainment systems for cars. Some maintain a Java codebase that predates Kotlin and will outlive several of us. Same two words on the résumé. Wildly different market.
The bands below blend public aggregator data with what our technical desks have actually closed across the 30-plus U.S. metros we cover. Base only in the third column, because Android is a role where the fourth column does a lot of the work. Sometimes most of it.

The bottom row is not a seniority step. It is a different profession that happens to share a keyword, and if you paste it into the same req as the row above it you will confuse everyone including yourself. It happens constantly.
Six Sources, and Not One of Them Agrees
Every salary site publishes a national average for this title. They are all defensible. They are also spread across seventy thousand dollars, so “defensible” is doing a lot of lifting. Seventy thousand.

Look at the platform engineer row for a second. Glassdoor reports $172,123 for that title with a range from $136,230 to $220,120. It is built on three submissions. Three. I include it because it lines up with what we see on real platform searches and because nobody else publishes the number at all, but treat it as a rumor with good sourcing rather than data. Two more submissions and it moves fifteen grand. Maybe thirty.
The other five deserve more trust and still describe different populations. PayScale reads $103,203 because the people who look up their own salary on a comparison tool tend to be three years into a career, not eleven. Built In reads $113,383 base plus $20,030 in additional cash because its sample lives at venture-funded product companies. Levels.fyi reads $200,000 median total compensation because the engineers who bother to submit there work where equity is the point. Selection bias, in both directions.
For a floor that is not anybody’s marketing, the Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median for all software developers at $133,080 as of May 2024, with the bottom ten percent under $79,850 and the top ten percent above $211,450, and forecasts fifteen percent employment growth over the 2024 to 2034 decade on about 129,200 openings a year. Android app work sits close to that median. Android platform work sits meaningfully above it. Start there, then move for the reason that actually matters, which is not seniority.
Android Salary by Years of Experience
Junior, and why the floor held up
$85,000 to $110,000. Built In puts developers with under a year at $85,571, which matches what we see, and the floor has held up better than the equivalent web development floor because Android has a real toolchain to learn before anyone is useful. A junior who can build a screen in Compose and wire it to a ViewModel is not yet a junior who can debug why the app is being killed in the background on a Samsung device running One UI. That second skill takes about eighteen months and nobody teaches it. There is no course.
Mid-level, where we fill fastest
$110,000 to $140,000. This is where the market is thickest and where we fill fastest. PayScale reports $96,304 average total compensation for the one-to-four-year band, which reads low against our placements, and the gap is mostly geography plus the fact that self-reporting undercounts the people doing well. Anchor toward the top of this band if the person has shipped through a full OS release cycle. Not everyone has. Ask.
Senior, and the $54,000 question
$140,000 to $180,000 base. Glassdoor’s senior title reads $160,285 with a 75th percentile of $210,294, which is the single most useful public number in this guide. A senior Android engineer is not writing more code than a mid-level one. They are the person who decides that the crash you have been chasing for three sprints is a lifecycle bug and not a networking bug, and who says no to the fourth modularization rewrite. We placed a senior with a healthcare client in Irvine last spring whose first month consisted almost entirely of deleting things. Their crash-free rate went from 97.1 percent to 99.4 percent. Nothing they did was novel. Judgment is the product.
Staff and principal, ten years in
$175,000 to $225,000 base, and total packages at companies handing out real equity run $230,000 to $400,000 and up. Small pool, and it gets smaller if you need someone who has run a release train for an app with tens of millions of monthly users. When one of these people comes free it is usually a reorg, and they are gone inside a month. Decide your number early. Not after the second interview.

Google Went Compose-First in July, and Your Résumé Filter Is Now Out of Date
This is the section with a date on it, so read it before the tables.
On July 28, 2026, the Android team published a five-year retrospective on Jetpack Compose confirming that more than 68 percent of the top 1,000 Play Store apps now run it in production, and stating plainly that Google is Compose-first, with the older Views toolkit moving into maintenance mode. Maintenance mode is not deprecation. Everybody in the market read it as deprecation anyway. Perception clears faster than policy.
What that did to compensation is straightforward. An engineer whose entire portfolio is XML layouts and Fragments is now maintaining a stack Google has publicly stopped investing in, and their market has narrowed to companies with large legacy codebases. Those companies exist and they pay fine. There are just fewer of them every quarter. That trend is not reversing. Meanwhile an engineer with two years of production Compose behind them, ideally including a migration they did not enjoy, has become the default hire, and their band moved up ten to fifteen thousand dollars over roughly eighteen months.
The mistake we watch clients make is the opposite of what you would expect. They over-index on Compose and screen out the Views engineers entirely. Bad call, usually. If your codebase is 300,000 lines of XML with a Compose interop layer bolted on, the person who has actually lived through that migration is worth more to you than someone whose only Android experience is a greenfield Compose app that never had to interoperate with anything. Migration scar tissue is a skill. Nobody puts it on a résumé because there is no keyword for it. So ask instead.
Ask about it directly in the screen. “Walk me through the worst part of your Compose migration” gets you further than any list of technologies, and the people who have not done one will tell you so in about four seconds.
Android Developer Pay by City
Geography still moves this number, though less than it did in 2021 and in a shape that surprises people. Figures below show base pay for a solid mid-to-senior app engineer, indexed against $135,000 nationally.

Built In’s dataset does something odd that is worth knowing about before you cite it in a comp meeting. It ranks fully remote Android roles at $149,714, its highest figure, above Los Angeles at $143,104 and well above San Francisco at $122,000. San Francisco reading below remote is not a real market signal. It is a sample artifact, and it happens because Bay Area Android engineers overwhelmingly work at companies where the offer is mostly equity, so the base figure they report looks modest next to a fully remote role that pays cash and nothing else.
The lesson generalizes. Any metro with heavy big-tech concentration will look cheap on a base-salary chart and expensive the moment you try to hire there. Seattle does this too. So does Austin now.
Locally, we place a fair amount of Android work in Orange County, and the Irvine and Costa Mesa bands run within a few thousand dollars of the Los Angeles line, not below it. Clients based here sometimes budget as though they are in a discount market relative to LA. They are not, and the candidates know exactly what the drive to El Segundo is worth. They have priced it.
Three Jobs Wearing One Job Title
Here is the part that no aggregator captures, and it is where most band-setting goes wrong.

Platform work is its own economy. An AOSP engineer bringing up Android on new silicon spends their week in C++, device tree files, and vendor kernel patches, and has probably never opened Jetpack Compose. Handset makers, set-top box vendors, ruggedized industrial hardware companies, and increasingly the automakers all compete for the same few hundred people. That is why the number runs high on a sample of three. There is no supply. None.
Automotive deserves its own note because the engagement shape is unusual. Android Automotive OS is the version that runs as the car’s operating system rather than projecting from a phone, and the vehicle programs built on it move on multi-year timelines with safety certification gates in the middle. Contracts are long. Eighteen months is normal. If you are staffing an AAOS program, contract-to-hire works better than direct hire almost every time, because the program has a defined shape and your headcount need falls off a cliff after launch.
The enterprise row is the one clients misprice most. Building an inventory app for two thousand managed Zebra scanners is real work and it is not scarce work, and paying $165,000 for it because that is what the salary guide said gets you an engineer who is bored by month five. Boredom shows up on your attrition report about two quarters later. Expensive lesson.
Android and iOS, and Where the Usual Comparison Breaks
You have probably heard that iOS pays more. At the app layer, in the United States, that has been true for years and it remains true by roughly six to nine percent at the senior level. The comparison stops working the moment you leave the app layer, and this is the part almost nobody says out loud. There is no iOS equivalent of AOSP work, because Apple does not license iOS to anyone. Nobody is porting iOS to a refrigerator. Nobody ever will. Every dollar of iOS platform engineering is spent inside one company in Cupertino, while Android platform work happens at Samsung, at Qualcomm, at Garmin, at every automaker running AAOS, and at a long tail of hardware companies most people have never heard of. That entire market has no iOS counterpart, and it pays above every app-layer band in this guide.
So the honest version is narrower than the headline. iOS pays more for building apps. Android pays more for building the thing the apps run on. If you are a candidate weighing which one to learn, that distinction is worth more than the six percent.
Kotlin Multiplatform muddies it further, and in a direction that favors Android engineers. Google now officially recommends KMP for sharing business logic across Android, iOS, and web, which means a Kotlin engineer can credibly own the shared layer of an iOS app without ever learning Swift UI patterns. We have started seeing reqs that say “Android engineer” and mean “the person who owns our shared domain layer across both apps.” Those pay senior-plus regardless of what the title says. Read the responsibilities, not the header. Every time.

Base, Bonus, and the Grant That Does the Real Work
Everything above is base. At the companies paying the most, base is the smaller half of the story and sometimes barely half of that.
Levels.fyi puts the median Android engineer at Meta at $340,450 in total compensation, and the split is the interesting part. Base median $185,000. Equity median $125,000. Bonus $30,450. So roughly forty-six percent of that package is base pay and the rest is a grant that vests over four years and moves with the stock. Google’s median for the same title is $252,000, on a $192,000 base, with the ninetieth percentile reaching $500,000.
Across all reporting companies, Levels.fyi shows a median of $200,000 total against a $170,000 base, with the tenth percentile at $104,000 and the ninetieth at $363,513. Sample size sixty-five, so it is thin, but it is thin in a specific direction. Everyone who submits works somewhere with a stock plan.
Practical consequence for a mid-size company. If you are trying to pull a senior Android engineer out of Meta with a $175,000 base and a 10 percent bonus, you are not competing, and no recruiter can close that gap by talking. You compete on scope, on shipping something that reaches users this quarter instead of after four review cycles, or on the specific problem being interesting. We have won those searches. Never on money. Not once.
One thing that does work and gets underused. A candidate two years into a four-year vest is leaving real money behind, and a signing bonus structured to cover the unvested portion of the current year costs you once instead of forever. Cheaper than raising base by twenty thousand dollars permanently. Most companies will not consider it because signing bonuses come out of a different budget line, which is an accounting reason and not a business one. Worth escalating.
Contract and Freelance Android Rates
A meaningful share of Android work should be contract and is not. App rewrites, a platform bring-up on new hardware, an AAOS program, a push to ship version one before a trade show. All bounded. None of it needs a permanent headcount fight against a company with better equity.

Those rates run modestly under the equivalent iOS contract bands, which tracks the same six-to-nine percent app-layer gap, and they invert on the platform row where Android has no competition at all. One screening note for the corp-to-corp row. Ask for a Play Store link and open it on your own phone. Then check the reviews from the last six months, because an app that shipped and then rotted tells you something a portfolio screenshot never will. Ten minutes. Best filter we have on this role. Cheap, too.
The Advice That Costs Us the Bigger Fee
Plenty of the Android reqs that come across my desk should not be direct hire, and a few should not be reqs at all.
Take the second case first. If you have one Android app, it is stable, it ships four times a year, and your actual need is somebody to keep it current with Google’s annual API level requirements, you do not need a full-time Android engineer. You need a maintenance contract or a fractional arrangement, and paying $150,000 a year plus benefits for what is realistically eight weeks of work annually is how companies end up with a bored senior engineer quietly looking around by spring. We have told clients this and lost the placement. Then they call us for something real eighteen months later. That is the trade. We take it.
The first case is more common. Your Android work is genuinely a project with an end, and you are trying to hire permanently because that is the process your finance team understands. A twelve-month contract engineer at $110 an hour costs less than a $175,000 direct hire once you count the fee, the benefits load, and the severance conversation when the project wraps. It also gets started in nine days instead of nine weeks. Finance rarely models that part.
Direct hire is right when Android is your product surface rather than a channel for it. If your app is where your customers actually live, you want somebody with ownership and a vesting schedule, not a contractor with an end date. That is a real distinction and most companies know which side they are on the moment somebody asks the question out loud. So ask it out loud.
What Our Android Searches Look Like Right Now
KORE1 fills a typical IT role in 17 days. Android is slower. A senior app engineer with the band right on day one takes three to four weeks, and a platform or AOSP search takes eight to twelve. Get the band wrong and tack on another month, because nobody corrects quickly on this role. Thin applicant flow gets read as an empty market. The market is not empty. Your number is.
Three patterns from our desks this year. Compose-migration experience has become the single most requested qualifier on Android reqs, showing up in more than half of what came in since April. Platform and AOSP requests have grown faster than app requests for four straight quarters, driven mostly by automotive and industrial hardware. And counteroffer rates on senior Android engineers are running above our book average, which tells you employers holding one know how hard replacement is. They are right to worry.
Android placements hold our 92 percent mark for candidates still seated at twelve months, running slightly ahead of where we land across technology roles generally. The reason is unglamorous. Android engineers who have been doing it for six or more years chose to stay in a specialty during a decade when everybody told them to go full-stack, and people who have already made that choice do not churn much. Pay them correctly and give them something to own. That is the whole retention strategy.
Things Clients Ask Us on the First Call
What should I actually put in the budget line?
Plan on $140,000 to $165,000 base for a solid senior app engineer in most U.S. metros, and $110,000 to $140,000 for mid-level. Add 20 to 30 percent for benefits and payroll burden. Platform and automotive roles run higher.
The budget that gets into trouble is not the one that is ten thousand light. It is the one built off a national average for the generic title, which pools juniors into the same figure and lands you around $106,000. That number will produce applicants. It will not produce hires. Different populations entirely.
Why does Glassdoor say $106,000 when your table says $160,000?
Because those are two different searches on the same site. Glassdoor’s generic “Android Developer” average is $106,403 across all levels. Its “Senior Android Developer” figure is $160,285 from 697 salaries. Same market, different query.
Run the seniority-specific search every time. It takes four seconds and it is the difference between a req that closes and a req that sits open through two quarterly business reviews.
Is Compose experience worth paying extra for now?
Yes, and the premium is roughly ten to fifteen thousand dollars over an equivalent Views-only engineer. Google confirmed in July 2026 that it is Compose-first with the Views toolkit in maintenance mode, and the market repriced quickly.
Do not overcorrect, though. Someone who has migrated a large XML codebase to Compose is more useful on a legacy product than someone whose only experience is a clean greenfield app. Ask what they had to interoperate with. The answer separates them fast. Usually within a minute.
Android or iOS, who really earns more?
iOS wins at the app layer by about six to nine percent at senior level. Android wins everywhere below the app layer, because platform and AOSP work has no iOS equivalent and pays $150,000 to $215,000.
Apple does not license iOS, so there is no market for engineers porting it to somebody else’s hardware. Android runs on cars, televisions, warehouse scanners, and point-of-sale terminals, and every one of those is a job that simply does not exist on the other side.
Can I hire a junior and grow them into this?
Usually yes, and it works better on Android than on most stacks we staff. Junior bands start around $85,000, the learning resources are excellent and free, and Compose lowered the entry barrier meaningfully compared with the Fragments era.
The caveat is device behavior. Nothing in the documentation prepares somebody for battery optimization killing a background job on one OEM’s build and not another’s. That knowledge is earned on real users and it takes a year and a half. Budget for a senior to absorb the questions. Their calendar, not just your salary line.
What does a contract Android developer cost per hour?
Budget $85 to $130 an hour for senior app work on a W-2 contract and $60 to $90 for mid-level. Platform, AOSP, and Android Automotive engagements run $110 to $180 and typically last 12 to 18 months.
Contract is underused here relative to how much Android work is genuinely project-shaped. If the thing you are building has a launch date and no obvious second act, structure it as contract-to-hire and decide later. Optionality is free here.
How long should an Android search take?
Three to four weeks for a senior app engineer once the band is right, measured against the 17-day figure KORE1 averages on IT placements generally. Platform and AOSP searches take eight to twelve weeks, since the national pool is a few hundred people.
Past six weeks on an app role, the problem is almost never sourcing. Check the job description first. We keep finding reqs that ask for five years of Jetpack Compose, which is a requirement that eliminates most of the market given the toolkit reached stable release in July 2021.
Does Kotlin versus Java change what I pay?
Not by much on its own, since Kotlin has been the standard for new Android work since 2019. The premium sits with engineers fluent in both, because most production codebases are still mixed and somebody has to work across the seam.
Watch out for the opposite problem. An engineer with only Java Android experience and no Kotlin is a genuine gap in 2026, and it usually signals someone who has been maintaining one internal app for a long time rather than shipping.
Setting a Band You Can Defend in a Budget Meeting
Pick the track before you pick the number. App, platform, or automotive, because those are three different markets and the tables above only make sense once you have chosen. Level comes second. Metro and remote posture come last. Running that sequence backward, anchoring on a national average you found in ten seconds, is how a req sits open until somebody quietly deletes it.
Then run the seniority-specific search. That one habit is worth more than everything else in this guide.
