IT contractor rates in Charlotte run $43 to $54 an hour for a Level 2 help desk technician (median $48) and $97 to $119 for a mid software engineer (median $108), per KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: November 4, 2026

Now the budget version. A Level 2 help desk tech held for 13 weeks at that median is about $24,800, and a 3-month, 40-hour-a-week contract for a mid software engineer in Charlotte costs about $56,100 at the median bill rate. Those are invoice totals. Nothing gets added later for payroll tax or workers’ comp.

Charlotte prices like a bank town. Developers here bill almost exactly the national figure, but finance and data seats run ahead of it, and a senior contract accountant costs $15 an hour more than the U.S. median. Systems administrators and QA engineers go the other way. Cheaper here. Running IT or finance for a 200 to 2,000 person company in Mecklenburg or York County? Then the split tells you which reqs will strain the budget and which ones leave room.

We’ve placed technology contractors since 2005. The recruiters behind these figures work on our IT staffing in Charlotte desk, inside the wider IT staffing services practice, and every quote follows the same contract staffing terms. Fair warning. No Charlotte cell is observed yet, and the section on modeling says why.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Charlotte?

Double, give or take rounding. Straight math. Length buys no price break in this index. A mid software engineer is roughly $56,100 for a quarter and $112,100 for two, and a senior one is $66,000, then $132,000.

Finance seats deserve a second look here. A senior contract accountant lands at $53,200 for a quarter and $106,400 for two, which is more than a mid developer costs in plenty of other metros. Not small.

Picture a Ballantyne distributor moving its books onto NetSuite with a mid ERP consultant, a business systems analyst and a senior accountant for the close. One quarter of that crew is about $144,600. A slipped go-live that keeps all three to the 26-week mark doubles it to $289,200. Approve both figures at kickoff. Go-lives slip. Developer-heavy teams get the same arithmetic in contract development team cost, and staff augmentation cost by month spreads it across a calendar.

Week 26 matters for another reason. That’s 1,040 hours, the point where you can hire a KORE1 contractor onto your own payroll without a conversion fee. The mechanics are in contract-to-hire staffing.

What Is Inside a Charlotte Bill Rate?

Buyers usually call the gap a markup. Devin pushes back. “First off, it’s not a markup,” says Devin Hornick, a KORE1 partner. “Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.”

Then he walks the math up from a wage. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.” His example is Californian. The index applies that same 24% in Charlotte anyway, so every metro on it compares like for like. Hear a percentage from a vendor? Ask what base it sits on. A quoted markup often skips the burden entirely, and the number looks smaller than the bill.

Underneath sit four payroll costs. None shows up as its own line.

  • North Carolina unemployment tax

The NC Division of Employment Security starts new employers at 1%, charged on the first $34,200 each worker earns in 2026. The 2025 base was $32,600. Rates move with an employer’s claims history after that, and a York County worksite pays into South Carolina instead.

  • Workers’ comp

Required in North Carolina from the third employee on, per the NC Industrial Commission. For a W2 contractor, that premium is ours.

  • No sick leave mandate

State law gives private employers no paid sick leave requirement, and G.S. 95-25.1 keeps Charlotte and Mecklenburg County from adding one. California, where Devin’s 24% comes from, does mandate it, which is one reason a real Charlotte burden can differ from the flat 24% the index applies.

  • Federal taxes

Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare 1.45%, per IRS Publication 15. Federal unemployment is 6.0% of the first $7,000, which falls to 0.6% net once the state credit applies (IRS Topic 759).

On top of the legal minimums, each firm decides what else it carries. Ours includes fully paid dental and vision for contractors plus liability insurance on every assignment. Two identical hourly quotes can hide different coverage, so compare them against the contractor burden rate breakdown first.

How Do Charlotte Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?

Concord, home of Charlotte Motor Speedway, sits inside this same wage area, so here is the comparison the way a race gets read. Every distinct seat in running order by its interval over the U.S. median, biggest premium first.

P17QA engineer, mid$64$83−$19
Ties run in order of the higher Charlotte median. ERP consultants and business systems analysts price the same here, so they share a position.

Read it like a race. Ten seats run ahead of the national median, two run level, and five fall behind. The front of the order is money work. Not code. Senior accountants lead at $102 against $87, mid data analysts are $10 up, and controllers and ERP consultants follow.

Developers barely move. A mid software engineer bills $108 here and $108 nationally, a mid data engineer ties at $110, and a senior engineer is actually $4 under. The back of the field is infrastructure and test. Big gaps, too. A mid sysadmin is $8 behind, and a mid QA engineer trails by $19, at $64 against $83.

Why does finance run hot? Charlotte is home to Bank of America’s headquarters and Truist’s, and the BLS wage survey this model rests on picks up whatever local employers pay. We can’t prove the cause from wage data alone. What we can say is that the premium is real in the survey and that you should price senior accounting and audit help early.

Don’t bank the QA discount yet. It looks low. A $64 median for a mid tester comes straight from the local wage survey, which has no way to know a good Charlotte tester is also hearing from remote teams in Raleigh or New York. We’d test that line before anything else on a real req. Treat it as our hunch, not as index data.

Same state, different market

Raleigh-Durham is a separate wage area, about two and a half hours up I-85 and I-40. A senior accountant bills $19 an hour more in Charlotte than there, and a mid network engineer $11 more, while a mid QA engineer costs $24 less and a mid sysadmin $11 less. Atlanta sits closer. Its mid ERP consultants run $94, though, against $88 here. For the full grid of cities, open the KORE1 Contract Rate Index or the Georgia page on IT contractor rates in Atlanta. Wider benchmarks live in national tech contractor hourly rates, with seat-level detail in help desk bill rates by tier and QA contract bill rates.

Modeled, not observed

Why Every Charlotte Rate on the Sheet Is Modeled

Five is the bar. A metro gets an observed cell only after KORE1 has placed at least five contractors in that role there, and our volume is concentrated in Southern California. Charlotte hasn’t cleared five in any seat. Hence the tag on every line.

Modeled isn’t guessed. The floor is what the federal survey says Charlotte employers pay each occupation, the burden rides on that, and our own billing history sets the width of each band, which is why a controller’s range is much wider than a help desk tech’s. Use a line as an opening number. Expect it to move.

Your own req will move the number. Bank experience costs extra here, so a senior accountant who has run SOX testing or a BSA who came out of a model risk group will quote above the line, and so will a NetSuite developer who writes SuiteScript or anybody who has to start on Monday. The more common problem is plainer. The job title says senior, the budget was built for mid, and we’ll raise that before a quote goes out. NetSuite and finance-systems hires go through more KORE1 staffing in Charlotte. For national context on two neighboring seats, see IT project manager bill rates and BA contract rates nationally.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Charlotte: Which Costs Less?

Two questions settle it. How long is the work, and how confident are you in the hire?

  • Hourly, W2

    Contract

You pay hourly until the work ends. Past 1,040 hours you can hire the contractor with no conversion fee.

    How contract works
  • Try, then hire

    Contract-to-hire

Hourly during the trial period. Of 552 KORE1 contract-to-hire placements, 207 became employees (37.5%).

    Contract-to-hire details
  • One-time fee

    Direct hire

One fee, 20% of first-year base salary, backed by a 60-day replacement guarantee.

    Direct hire fees

Look hard at 37.5%. That’s a minority. Fewer than two in five trials end in a hire, so a staffing plan that books every contract-to-hire as future headcount will come up short. Sure about the person? Hire direct.

Short, defined work favors contract. Think of a quarter-end close at a SouthPark lender, or extra desk-side support while an Uptown floor moves. You stop paying when it ends, though a contract carries no replacement guarantee, and we say so before you sign. Direct hire costs more up front, $20,000 on a $100,000 salary, takes longer to fill and comes with 60 days of replacement cover. The person also stays. Contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost runs both side by side.

Start and length

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Charlotte, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Five marks between day one and fee-free conversion. They’re national figures from every KORE1 contract, since Charlotte alone is too small a sample.

  1. Day 3Median first shift after a signed offer, across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts
  2. Week 13520 hours, the 3-month column on the sheet
  3. Day 116Median KORE1 assignment, from 1,887 that ended
  4. Day 136Median IT assignment, 410 of those 1,887
  5. Week 261,040 hours, when conversion carries no fee
Marks are to scale across 26 weeks on wide screens. The shaded band runs between the two median assignments, and orange marks the 1,040-hour conversion point.

One quarter is rarely enough. Our median contract lasts 116 days, and IT work runs longer, to day 136, deep into week 20. A 13-week approval tends to lapse mid-assignment. Write the extension into the first request. Saves a second meeting.

Day 3 is the one people question. That clock starts once the offer is signed and the background work is finished, so it’s mostly laptops and logins. Finding the person takes its own time, covered in how fast a contractor can start.

Method

How These Charlotte Numbers Are Built

It takes three moves. First, pull the hourly wage for each occupation in the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia area from the May 2025 BLS OEWS wage tables, taking the low quartile for junior and Level 1, the median for mid and Level 2, and the high quartile for senior and Level 3. Second, multiply by 1.24. That’s the burden. Third, widen it into a bill range using the spread KORE1 actually sees between cost and bill on placements at that cost level.

The sheet draws on fourteen federal occupation codes. They are 15-1232 for help desk, 15-1244 for systems administrators, 15-1241 for network engineers, 15-1212 for security, 15-1252 for software engineers, 15-1253 for QA, 15-1243 for data engineers, 15-2051 for data analysts, 15-1211 for ERP consultants and business systems analysts, 13-1111 for business analysts, 13-1082 for project managers, 13-2051 for financial analysts, 13-2011 for accountants and 11-3031 for controllers.

Not every deal counts. Payroll-only setups, offshore work, corp-to-corp contracts and outliers with an odd gap between bill and pay are excluded, because none of them looks like the plain W2 contract a Charlotte buyer is pricing. This is version 2026-Q4, which has been live since October 16, 2026 and will be replaced by the next quarterly refresh in January 2027, so check back then if your req is still open. Questions

Common Questions

What will I pay for a Level 2 help desk technician on a 3-month contract in Charlotte?

About $24,800 for a 13-week contract at 40 hours a week, using the $48 Charlotte median from KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4. Most quotes run $43 to $54 an hour, and if the seat stays for 26 weeks the total is close to $49,700.

How much does a contract software engineer cost per hour in Charlotte in 2026?

$108 an hour at the median for a mid-level engineer, with most Charlotte quotes between $97 and $119 and a 13-week total near $56,100. Senior engineers run $116 to $137, median $127. That senior figure is $4 below the U.S. median.

How much is a mid-level systems administrator on contract in Charlotte?

A $71 median hourly bill, inside a $62 to $79 range. Tied for the lowest in the index. It’s $8 below the national median and $11 below Raleigh-Durham, and a full quarter costs about $37,000, or $74,000 for two.

What should I budget for a contract NetSuite or ERP consultant in Charlotte?

Figure $83 to $97 an hour for a mid-level consultant, median $88, which is $4 above the U.S. median. A quarter is about $45,700. Business systems analysts cost exactly the same here, because both seats share federal occupation code 15-1211, so the wage survey hands the model a single number for the two of them.

How much does a contract IT project manager bill in Charlotte?

Expect an $83 median, with most mid-level quotes from $74 to $94 an hour and about $43,400 for 13 weeks. Near national. The U.S. median is $81, the same as Raleigh-Durham.
