IT contractor rates in Phoenix run $44 to $55 an hour for a Level 2 help desk technician (median $49) and $94 to $117 for a mid software engineer (median $105), per KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: October 25, 2026

As of October 16, 2026, that help desk seat comes to about $25,500 for three months, and the software engineer to about $54,300. Both are full bill rates. Wages, payroll taxes and the employer costs a staffing firm carries are already inside them, so nothing gets added later. That’s the whole price.

A Phoenix IT director or controller usually arrives knowing three things. The role. The level. How long the work will last. Ryan McManus of KORE1 describes the buyer that way, and his point is that the page with real numbers is the one that earns the call. So here are the numbers. KORE1 has recruited in the Valley since 2018 and in technology since 2005, and these rates sit beside our IT staffing in Phoenix work, priced on the same contract staffing terms that run through all of our IT staffing services.

Phoenix is a quiet market on price. Most roles land right on the U.S. median or a few dollars under it. Every Phoenix row is modeled. The reason is lower down.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Phoenix?

Exactly double, give or take a rounding error. Not complicated. The hourly rate doesn’t fall for a longer term, so the second 13 weeks cost what the first did.

At the Phoenix median, a mid-level software engineer comes to about $54,300 for a quarter and $108,700 for two. A senior engineer runs $65,400 and then $130,700. On the support side, a Level 2 help desk seat is $25,500 and $51,100. No surprises in the math.

One habit stands out. Infrastructure and code cost the same here, because a mid network engineer and a mid software engineer both bill a $105 median. Put a mid network engineer, a mid systems administrator and a Level 2 help desk tech on one 13-week refresh and the three seats total about $118,600, or $237,300 if the work runs 26 weeks. A full development team priced the same way is in contract development team cost.

Once a contractor passes 1,040 hours, at week 26, a KORE1 contractor can join your payroll with no conversion fee. Pick the longer length and that date arrives on its own. Easy to plan around. Monthly math for more roles is in the staff augmentation cost breakdown, and the route itself is under contract-to-hire staffing.

Start and length

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Phoenix, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Five dates matter on a Phoenix contract, from the first shift to the day conversion turns free. They come from KORE1 placement records across every metro we staff.

  1. Day 3Median first shift after a signed offer, across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts
  2. Week 13520 hours, the 3-month line in the field book
  3. Day 116Median KORE1 assignment, from 1,887 that ended
  4. Day 136Median IT assignment, 410 of those 1,887
  5. Week 261,040 hours, when conversion carries no fee
Drawn to scale across the 26 weeks on wide screens. The shaded band spans the median assignment to the median IT assignment, and the orange mark is the 1,040-hour conversion point.

Both medians land past week 13. The IT one sits close to week 20. A Phoenix team that budgets a single quarter for an IT contractor will probably be asking for a second quote. Plan for it now.

The front end is short. That matters. Three days from signed offer to first shift means a 13-week budget buys nearly 13 weeks of actual work, and the data behind that is in how fast a contractor can start.

What Is Inside a Phoenix Bill Rate?

Devin Hornick, a partner at KORE1, opens with the words people get wrong. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.” He’s right.

His worked example makes it concrete. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.” The index applies that same flat 24% to Phoenix, because state costs shift and one number keeps every metro comparable. A quoted percentage that covers wages alone often leaves the burden out. Ask what it covers, then line the bids up with our staffing agency quote comparison.

In Arizona, these costs live inside the burden, and none of them gets a line of its own on an invoice. Four matter most.

  • Sick time

Arizona employees accrue one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours a year at employers with 15 or more people and 24 hours below that, under A.R.S. 23-372. Phoenix adds no city rule on top.

  • Weekly overtime

Arizona has no overtime law of its own, so the federal rule governs. Time and a half starts after 40 hours in a workweek, with no daily trigger of the kind California uses, as the U.S. Department of Labor explains.

  • State unemployment

Arizona taxes the first $8,000 of each worker’s wages for unemployment, and a new employer starts at 2% in 2026, according to Bloomberg Tax’s read of the state rate chart. That base is a little higher than the federal one below.

  • Federal payroll tax

Employers pay 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $184,500 and 1.45% Medicare, per IRS Publication 15. FUTA is 6.0% on the first $7,000, falling to a net 0.6% after the state credit (IRS Topic 759).

KORE1 also pays dental and vision in full for its contractors. So compare vendors on what the rate covers, not the headline. A seat-per-month quote converts back to an hourly figure with our guide to pricing models for staff augmentation, and the contractor burden rate page breaks the 24% into its parts.

Against the U.S.

How Do Phoenix IT Contractor Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?

Same model and the same levels in both columns. Only the wage area changes. The center line is the U.S. median, and each bar runs left where Phoenix is lower.

Help desk, Level 2$49$49Even
Systems administrator, mid$74$79−$5 (−6%)
Network engineer, mid$105$106−$1 (−1%)
Software engineer, mid$105$108−$3 (−3%)
ERP / NetSuite consultant, mid$82$84−$2 (−2%)
IT project manager, mid$80$81−$1 (−1%)
Controller, mid$113$127−$14 (−11%)

Phoenix doesn’t carry a premium. A Level 2 help desk seat lands exactly on the U.S. median at $49. Network engineers, project managers, ERP consultants and mid software engineers sit $1 to $3 under it. A mid systems administrator runs $5 under, $74 against $79, and a controller $14 under, $113 against $127, the widest gap on the page. Price each seat anyway.

Against other Sun Belt metros, Phoenix’s $105 mid software engineer matches Atlanta, sits $1 under Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin ($106), $4 under Denver ($109) and $2 over Salt Lake City ($103). Every metro side by side is in our IT contractor rates by city comparison, the U.S. tables are in our national tech contractor hourly rates and IT consulting rates, and the closest sibling is IT contractor rates in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Many of our clients are in Southern California, so the other question is whether an Arizona seat costs less. On the numbers it does. A mid software engineer billing $105 in Phoenix against $124 in Orange County or Los Angeles saves $19 an hour, which is $19,760 over 1,040 hours, provided the work can sit in a Phoenix or Scottsdale office. That’s real money. See IT contractor rates in Orange County and IT contractor rates in Los Angeles for those tables. For a support seat, our monthly help desk seat cost page does the conversion, and help desk contract bill rates by level has the national tiers.

Why Every Phoenix Rate in the Book Is Modeled

We’d rather say it plainly. Most KORE1 placements are in Southern California, and no Phoenix role has the five placements the index needs before it will print an observed number. So each Phoenix line is a model, labeled as one. Nothing is hidden.

It isn’t a guess. Federal wage data for the metro supplies the starting point, the same 24% burden sits on top, and our own billing history sets the spread. Read each line as the spot where Phoenix quotes tend to cluster. Yours will land near it.

Take the semiconductor corridor in Chandler. A mid QA tester or test engineer there bills $70 to $89, median $80, about $41,600 for a quarter. Price it against your own bench work. A real quote moves on four things. Onsite days in Chandler, Tempe or Scottsdale. Scarce skills, like ITAR-cleared work in Mesa or one specific ERP module. The start date. And level, because a senior title on a mid budget gets flagged before any number goes out. Who does the work? Test seats go through our QA staff augmentation team and semiconductor staffing. Admins come from our systems administrator recruiters, network seats from network engineer staffing and delivery leads from IT project manager staffing. For neighboring roles nationally, see project manager contract rates, business analyst contract bill rates and cloud engineer contract bill rates.

Where These Phoenix Contract Rates Apply

BLS measures one wage area for Maricopa and Pinal counties, the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metro, so the index publishes one Phoenix rate set for all of it. Same rates across the Valley. Onsite days and the drive across it move a quote more than the zip code does. Tucson is a separate wage area and isn’t priced here.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Phoenix: Which Costs Less?

Over a full year the three routes cost about the same. What changes is how fast you start and how easily you can undo the decision.

    Direct hire fees

Devin Hornick runs the numbers on a $100,000 hire. The 20% fee is $20,000, which spread over 1,040 hours is about what a contract bill rate carries anyway. “There’s really no savings in going direct hire versus contract,” he says. Hard to argue.

The better question is flexibility. A contract gets someone started quickly and flexes up or down, while a full-time hire brings stability and keeps the knowledge after the project ends. Ask which choice you could reverse if the first quarter goes sideways. Contract carries no replacement guarantee. We say so plainly. What it gives you is a worker who shows up, is paid every Friday and can convert free after 1,040 hours, and only direct hire carries the 60-day guarantee. The full numbers are in contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost.

Method

How These Phoenix Numbers Are Built

Start with the wage. Each role in the book gets its Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler hourly figure from the May 2025 BLS OEWS wage tables, using the 25th percentile for junior and Level 1 work, the median for mid and Level 2, and the 75th for senior and Level 3. Multiply by 1.24 for the employer burden. Last, apply the bill-to-cost spread that KORE1 placements show at a similar cost. Three steps. No black box.

Nine occupation codes sit behind the lines. Help desk is 15-1232, network engineering 15-1241, systems administration 15-1244, software engineering 15-1252, QA testing 15-1253, ERP consulting and business systems analysis 15-1211, project management 13-1082, accounting 13-2011 and controllers 11-3031.

Left out are payroll-only setups, offshore and corp-to-corp work, and any bill-to-pay spread outside the usual range, because they would drag the medians toward arrangements unlike a normal Phoenix contract. Version 2026-Q4 took effect October 16, 2026. The next refresh is due in January 2027, then every quarter after that. The rest is in how the index is built.
