IT contractor rates in Los Angeles put a Level 2 help desk technician at $53 to $66 an hour (median $58) and a mid-level software engineer at $111 to $136 (median $124), per the KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: October 19, 2026

Every figure here is a bill rate. It’s the amount a client is invoiced per hour. Wages and the full California employer load are already inside it, so the numbers drop into a budget as written. No math required.

Los Angeles requests come in every shape, from a studio floor in Burbank to a controller downtown. Nobody has the market hourly figure before the first quote arrives. That gap is what this page closes. KORE1 has recruited technology talent across Southern California since 2005, so these numbers sit beside the work of our Los Angeles IT staffing team, priced under contract staffing terms like the rest of our IT staffing services.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Los Angeles?

Close to double. Signing for longer doesn’t earn a lower rate, so 26 weeks at 40 hours costs about twice what 13 weeks does, and the only way to pay less per hour is to ask for a different level of experience. Simple as that.

A mid-level software engineer at the Los Angeles median comes to about $64,400 for a quarter and about $128,700 for two. A Level 2 help desk tech on a laptop refresh comes to $30,400, then $60,800.

Now price a small crew. A Level 2 help desk tech, a mid-level systems administrator, a mid-level software engineer and a mid-level project manager, each at the median for 13 weeks, come to about $183,300 together. A real number. The one a finance team actually approves.

Twenty-six weeks at 40 hours is 1,040 hours. That’s also when a KORE1 contractor can move onto your payroll without a conversion fee, which is how a contract-to-hire plan works from the start. Choose the longer contract and the decision date is already set. Worth knowing. Cost by month for more roles lives in the staff augmentation cost breakdown.

Start and length

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Los Angeles, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Offer to first shift takes three days at the median, across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts. After that, it comes down to how long the work lasts. Short or long.

  • 3-month contract520 hours

  • 6-month contract1,040 hours, the no-fee conversion point
SW start work, WF work finish. Bars are drawn to scale on a 26-week calendar. Assignment medians come from 1,887 ended KORE1 assignments, 410 of them IT.

The median KORE1 assignment runs 116 days, a little under 17 weeks, and IT assignments run longer at 136 days, which is why a 13-week budget so often turns into a second quote once the project meets its first real obstacle. Most contracts don’t end at a round number. They end when the project does. Not before.

Speed is the other half. Eighty-six percent of KORE1 contractors start within a week of an accepted offer and 37% start the same day, so 13 weeks of budget usually buys 13 working weeks rather than ten. That adds up.

What Is Inside a Los Angeles Bill Rate?

Devin Hornick, KORE1 partner, opens with a correction. A blunt one. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.”

His worked example is simple. Pay a contractor $100 an hour and the California burden of 24% takes the cost to $124 before a staffing firm earns anything. A bill rate on that seat typically lands around $150 to $160. So when a firm quotes you a markup percentage, ask what it sits on, because a figure applied to wages alone leaves the burden out, which is how two quotes for the same contractor can look far apart without either one being wrong. The employer load behind that 24% is itemized in the California employer load, line by line.

The Los Angeles layers sit inside that gap. None of them shows up as its own line on the invoice. Here they are.

  • Paid sick leave

Five days or 40 hours a year is the California floor for every W2 contractor, set out in the Labor Commissioner’s guidance. Los Angeles also has a city ordinance of its own, so ask which one a quote is built on.

  • Daily overtime

California pays overtime by the day. Past eight hours it’s time and a half and past 12 it’s double time, as the DIR overtime FAQ explains. A cutover night can hit both.

  • State unemployment

A new California employer pays 3.4% UI and 0.1% ETT on the first $7,000 of each worker’s wages, per the EDD’s current rates.

  • Federal unemployment

FUTA starts at 6.0% on the first $7,000 and is normally 0.6% after the credit, per IRS Topic 759. California owes the federal government on an unemployment loan, which can trim that credit, and the Labor Department’s list of potential 2026 reductions is final on November 10, 2026.

  • Payroll tax and insurance

Employer Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45%, per IRS Publication 15. Workers’ compensation and liability insurance sit on top.

  • Benefits KORE1 chooses to carry

Dental and vision, which KORE1 pays in full.

Line quotes up on that basis. Nothing else is fair. A vendor that charges per seat each month can be converted to an hourly figure with our guide to pricing models for staff augmentation.

How Do Los Angeles IT Contractor Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?

Identical method and levels on both sides, with the wage area as the only variable.

Median contract bill rate per hour, Los Angeles versus United States, KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4
Role and levelLos AngelesNationalGap
Help desk, Level 2$58$49+$9
Systems administrator, mid$84$79+$5
Software engineer, mid$124$108+$16
ERP / NetSuite consultant, mid$96$84+$12
IT project manager, mid$86$81+$5
Controller, mid$134$127+$7

The widest premiums are on software engineers and ERP consultants, roughly 14 to 15%, and on Level 2 help desk at 18%. Systems administrators, project managers and controllers sit within about 6%. Barely a premium.

Other metros give the figure context. The Los Angeles mid software engineer median of $124 lands just under San Diego ($126), New York ($127) and Seattle ($128), and $19 below the Bay Area ($143), the only California metro in the index where the gap is large. Dallas-Fort Worth sits at $106. Lower. All 22 metros are side by side in our IT contractor rates by city comparison, and the national tables are in tech contractor hourly rates for 2026.

Remote talent from a cheaper state can shrink the gap on engineering seats, since $16 an hour on a mid software engineer is about $16,600 across 1,040 hours. Help desk is different. A seat that handles hardware usually has to be onsite. Pricing a support seat? See what a help desk seat costs per month.

Why the KORE1 Placement Rows Sit Above and Below the Model

The lower block on the sheet isn’t a model. It’s the bill rate on KORE1 W2 contracts that started from 2023 through 2026, mostly in Los Angeles and Orange County, and a row appears only when five or more placements stand behind it. Real invoices.

Three of the four sit under the model. Help desk lands at a $49 median across 39 placements. Lower. Systems administrators come in at $57 (n=12) and software engineers at $105 (n=16). Why? Each observed figure blends every level, while the modeled ones price a mid-level hire. Apples and oranges.

Project managers run the opposite way. Across 21 KORE1 placements the median bill rate was $116, against $86 modeled for a mid-level hire. Our group includes program managers and scrum masters on ERP and software work, where the BLS category spans every kind of project specialist. Different jobs.

Neither figure is wrong. One describes the market, the other what Southern California clients actually signed. If a req says “program” anywhere, lean toward the observed number. Admin hires come through our systems administrator recruiters and delivery leads through our IT project manager recruiters.

Where These Los Angeles Contract Rates Apply

BLS treats the basin as a single wage area, so one rate set covers all of it. Onsite days and the drive shape a quote more than the neighborhood does. The 405 matters.

  • Downtown Los Angelesfinance, legal, healthcare and civic IT
  • Burbank and Glendalestudio, media and entertainment technology
  • Culver City and Playa Vistastreaming, gaming and Silicon Beach teams
  • Santa Monicasoftware, ad tech and health tech offices
  • El Segundo and Torranceaerospace, defense and manufacturing sites
  • Pasadenaengineering, research and life sciences campuses
  • Long Beachport, logistics and hospital systems
  • San Fernando Valleyinsurance, healthcare and entertainment back offices

Orange County sits in the same BLS wage area, so its modeled figures match these line for line. If your site is in Irvine or Anaheim, the Orange County contractor rates page frames the same numbers around that county. For a conversation about non-IT hiring, the Los Angeles staffing agency page is the place to start. ERP seats go through more KORE1 staffing in Los Angeles, finance contractors through accounting staffing in Los Angeles with pay by role in our 2026 contract accountant bill rates, and shorter assignments through the temporary staffing agency in Los Angeles.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Los Angeles: Which Costs Less?

Across a full year the totals end up closer than most buyers expect. What differs is when the money goes out and what you can unwind. Timing, mostly.

Devin puts the tradeoff in two lines. Contract is quick and flexible, easy to scale up and down. Full time is the opposite. Devin again. “It’s really not super flexible, but you have stability… legacy knowledge.”

A contract has no replacement guarantee, and we won’t dress that up. The commitments are plain. Your contractor arrives on time, is paid every Friday and can convert after 1,040 hours. Direct hire does carry the 60-day guarantee. Pick accordingly. Choose by what you need the freedom to undo, and compare the arithmetic in contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost.

Method

How These Los Angeles Numbers Are Built

The modeled rows start from the BLS wage for each occupation in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro, taken from the BLS OEWS wage tables for May 2025. Junior and Level 1 take the 25th percentile, mid takes the median, senior the 75th. A 24% employer burden goes on top, then the bill-to-cost spread KORE1 sees on its own placements at that cost level. That’s the recipe.

Robert Ardell, KORE1, describes the approach in plain terms. “Scrape the web for generic stuff too… what’s the average data engineer with three years of experience… on an hourly basis… and then we use our own personal data from our contractors to complement that.” The codes used are 15-1232 (help desk), 15-1244 (systems administrators), 15-1252 (software engineers), 15-1211 (ERP consultants and business systems analysts), 13-1082 (project managers) and 11-3031 (controllers). Six codes.

The observed rows come directly from KORE1 W2 contract and contract-to-hire starts dated 2023 through 2026. Payroll-only arrangements, offshore and corp-to-corp engagements, and bill-to-pay spreads outside the normal range are left out, since they would drag the medians toward deals unlike a typical Los Angeles contract. Version 2026-Q4 took effect October 16, 2026 and refreshes in January 2027. Quarterly.
