Roblox Layoffs 2026: Gaming Platform Engineering Map

Roblox did not lay off engineers in 2026. Headcount went the other way. Up 24 percent last year, to 3,065 full-time staff, and more than 2,300 of those people build product. The pressure people are sensing is real, though. Full-year bookings guidance got cut from roughly 22 to 26 percent growth down to 8 to 12 percent, and the company kept hiring straight through it. So there is a large gaming engineering bench available right now. Just not from Roblox.

Search volume for this term is a symptom, not a signal.

Roblox closed 2025 with 3,065 full-time employees, up from 2,474 the year before, per its own annual filing as reported by PocketGamer.biz in April. 591 net new hires. Product and engineering hold about 75 percent of the total. Meanwhile the games industry outside Roblox is having the worst year in its recorded history, and I think the two facts are getting collapsed into one query by people who are worried about the right thing and typing the wrong company into the search bar.

So this page does something different from the rest of our layoff coverage. Instead of mapping a bench coming off one employer, it maps a bench coming off an entire sector, and explains why the company at the center of the search term is a buyer in that market rather than a seller. My bias, up front, because you should price it in. I run growth and partnerships at KORE1 and we place engineers for a fee, so a hire you make off this analysis can end up on our invoice. One section below argues you should go hire a category of person your ATS is currently auto-rejecting, and another argues that two of the five profiles are overpriced. Both of those cost us money to say. They stay in.

What Roblox Actually Did in 2026

The numbers are strange enough to be worth walking through slowly, because they don’t fit the shape of any normal layoff story.

Start with Q1 2026. Revenue there hit $1.44 billion, up 39 percent year over year. Bookings, $1.73 billion, up 43 percent. Hours engaged, 31 billion. Daily active users, 132 million, up 35 percent. Every one of those is a growth number most public software companies would trade a limb for, and the stock got hammered anyway, because on the same call Roblox cut full-year bookings growth guidance to a range starting at 8 percent. Then the net loss widened to $248 million, which included a $57 million accrual tied to youth safety consumer protection settlements.

Growth, decelerating hard, with a widening loss and a hiring spree on top. That combination is what a company looks like when it is spending through a transition rather than retreating from one.

The transition has a name and a start date. In January, Roblox made facial age estimation mandatory worldwide for anyone who wants to use chat, sorting users into six age bands and restricting who can talk to whom. Nobody at the company pretended this was free. Management flagged greater-than-expected headwinds on user acquisition, App Store ratings dropped, and organic signups weakened, all of which the CFO summarized about as bluntly as a CFO can. Retention and monetization hold up. The signup pipeline doesn’t.

Read that as a hiring document and it says something specific. A company doesn’t voluntarily suppress its own top-of-funnel and eat a guidance cut unless it has decided the regulatory floor is moving and it would rather build to the future floor now. Nobody does that by accident. Building to it takes engineers. Quite a lot of them. It takes biometrics integration, ML classification, policy tooling, appeals infrastructure, and an enormous amount of unglamorous plumbing that has to work in nineteen languages without generating a news cycle.

That is where a chunk of the 591 net new people went.

The Bench Is Enormous. It Is Just Somewhere Else.

Here is the part that matters if you have an open req.

The ASGC games industry layoffs tracker, maintained by Amir Satvat, raised its 2026 forecast to 14,259 job losses in late July, up 78 percent from the 8,025 it projected in January. For scale, 2025 came in at 9,197 and 2024 at an estimated 15,631. Five-year cumulative losses are now approaching 60,000 people. North America accounts for 66 percent of the events and 79 percent of the affected workers, with the United States alone representing 48 percent of the 2026 total, according to Outlook Respawn’s coverage of the tracker.

Satvat’s own line on it was that the pace is running ahead of what his models predicted. He works in business development at Tencent Games and has spent three years building the most complete public dataset anyone has on this subject. So when he says his own model is running behind reality, believe him.

Names, then. Generic numbers don’t help you source. Cloudhead Games cut roughly 70 percent of staff on January 6. Ubisoft Halifax went the next day, 71 people. Meta closed Sanzaru, Armature, and Twisted Pixel on January 13. Ubisoft Toronto took about 40 roles in February. Sony shut Bluepoint Games. EA has run multiple waves this year, including Battlefield Studios. Iron Galaxy, a co-development and porting shop, cut again and said publicly it now treats these market conditions as permanent rather than cyclical.

That last one is the detail I would underline. A studio that calls the downturn structural won’t be rehiring its bench in eighteen months. Those people are leaving games. For good, mostly.

Which is your opening. A strange one, too, because most of the engineers in that group have never been recruited outside the industry and have no idea how to price themselves in yours.

Five Profiles Coming Off the Gaming Bench

A generic recruiter files all of these under “game developer” and sends you a Unity generalist. Then you lose a month. The distinctions below are the difference between a req that fills and a req that eats your quarter.

Real-Time Networking and Engine Engineers

The deepest transferable skill in the entire category, and the most consistently underpriced.

These are people who have spent years on C++ engine internals, deterministic simulation, client-side prediction, lag compensation, and state reconciliation across unreliable connections at a scale where a 40-millisecond regression generates a Reddit thread. Roblox operates one of the biggest real-time simulation networks anybody has built. So do several of the studios that just cut staff. Same skill. Different logo.

Fintech has been quietly hiring these people for low-latency order flow work for about three years. Robotics and autonomy teams take them for the same reason. Ask whether your product has a real-time collaborative surface, a live-ops backend, or any place where state has to stay consistent across thousands of concurrent sessions. If it does, this is your profile, and right now you can land someone genuinely excellent for less than an equivalently senior backend engineer carrying strictly less hard-won intuition about distributed state. Cheaper and better. That pairing doesn’t come around often.

Trust, Safety, and Age-Assurance Engineering

Nobody budgeted for this in 2024. Everybody does now.

The Roblox age-check rollout is the loudest example, but the same requirement is landing on every consumer platform with a minor user base, and the engineering underneath it is specific. Biometric vendor integration, on-device versus server-side inference tradeoffs, immediate-deletion data handling, classification models tuned for a false-positive cost that is measured in regulatory exposure rather than user annoyance. Roblox also open-sourced Sentinel, its early-signal child endangerment detection system, which tells you the company would rather set an industry standard than keep a moat.

The candidates who have shipped this are rare and they know it. Four have gone through full loops with us in the last nine months. All four closed fast. Under three weeks each, and two of them were holding competing offers from companies with no gaming exposure at all.

Roblox-Native Creator Engineers

Your applicant tracking system is auto-rejecting these people. It is a mistake.

Creators earned more than $1.5 billion through the Roblox Developer Exchange program in fiscal 2025, up 63 percent from $922.8 million in 2024. In April the company raised the DevEx rate for age-checked adult U.S. creators from 26.6 percent to 37.8 percent. That is not a hobby economy. There are people running live products with millions of monthly users, doing their own telemetry, their own A/B infrastructure, their own economy balancing and fraud response, with a P&L they own.

They write Luau, which is not on your keyword list. They have no FAANG logo. Half of them are 24. And several of the sharpest product engineers I have placed in the last two years came out of exactly this pool, because running a live game with a real economy teaches instrumentation and user behavior in a way that three years of ticket work does not.

Screen them on shipped metrics rather than stack. Ask about concurrent users, retention curves, and what they did when revenue dropped 30 percent overnight after a platform change. The good ones answer instantly.

3D and Generative Pipeline Engineers

Roblox’s Cube foundation model is a 1.8-billion-parameter system trained on roughly 1.5 million 3D assets, tokenizing shapes and predicting the next shape token the way a language model predicts words. It is open source on GitHub. The 2026 version adds functional generation, so a text prompt produces a car that a player can actually get into and drive.

The engineers who build these pipelines sit at an intersection almost nobody staffs well, combining mesh processing, differentiable rendering, and applied ML infrastructure. Demand for them runs well past games, into simulation, digital twins, e-commerce visualization, and industrial design. It is also one of two profiles I would call overpriced today. Consumer-Scale Platform Infrastructure

Least exciting, most reusable.

Someone runs the Kubernetes fleets, the edge routing, the observability stack, and the cost model for a service handling 31 billion engagement hours a quarter. None of that work is gaming-specific once you take the game out of it. These candidates transfer into any high-traffic consumer platform in about two weeks. They interview well, because the scale numbers on their resume are genuinely large. They are also the profile most likely to be gone before you finish your third onsite. Move fast on these.

What This Talent Actually Costs

Almost every public source measures compensation in this category badly. Badly enough to matter. The reason is worth understanding before you read the table.

Salary aggregators bundle two labor markets that have nothing to do with each other. ZipRecruiter puts the national average for a game engine programmer at $73,462 as of February 2026. Glassdoor says $94,017 for the same title, with a typical range of $70,513 to $128,136. Then Levels.fyi reports median total compensation for a Roblox software engineer at $475,000, running from $221,000 at IC1 to over $1.2 million at the top.

Those numbers don’t conflict. They describe different jobs that happen to share a word.

One market is studio production work, often contract, frequently project-scoped, priced against a shrinking pool of publisher budgets. The other is public-company platform engineering with equity that vests. People cross from the first market into the second constantly. Comp roughly triples. That is exactly why your offer against this bench has to specify which market you think you are competing in.

Two honest caveats. The 3D generative row is inflated right now and I would argue about it with anyone, because a real share of that premium buys a resume keyword rather than a shipped pipeline, and the interview skill required to tell those apart isn’t widely held. Trust and safety is the second one I would flag, though for a different reason. That premium is real. It’s just early, and I expect it to normalize once the tooling matures and the specialty stops being artisanal.

For the wider engineering context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics still projects 15 percent employment growth for software developers from 2024 to 2034 against roughly 129,200 annual openings, at a median wage of $133,080. So gaming is having a brutal contraction inside a labor market that is otherwise expanding. Both true at once. That mismatch is the entire opportunity here. If You Are Hiring Against This Bench

Rewrite the requisition before you touch anything else. A posting that says “5+ years game industry experience required” filters out nobody you want and signals to a displaced Ubisoft engineer that you are a studio, which is the sector they are actively trying to leave. Describe the problem instead. Real-time state sync across unreliable clients. Consumer platform, eight-figure user counts. Moderation systems under regulatory scrutiny. Those phrases pull the right inbound and cost you nothing.

Second thing, and this one is a genuine advantage that expires. Engineers coming out of a studio closure have usually never negotiated outside games, and the comp gap between the two markets is large enough that a fair offer from you reads as generous to them. Careful here, though. There is a version of this advice that amounts to wage suppression, and I am not making it. Pay the platform-market band. What you get is the ability to hire meaningfully above your usual bar at your existing budget, while they still walk away with the best offer of their career. Both sides win. Lowball this bench and you lose the person in month seven, which is worse than never hiring them.

Third. Fix your screen for the creator pool specifically. If your ATS knocks out anyone without a traditional CS degree or a recognizable employer, you will never see the Luau developer running a live experience with 400,000 monthly actives and a real economy to manage. Add a portfolio path. Ask for metrics instead of stack.

Last one is about speed, and it is the only urgent item on this page. Trust and safety and 3D generative candidates are closing in under three weeks. If your loop runs five weeks with four onsites and a take-home, you won’t hire either profile, and there’s no budget number that fixes a calendar problem. Compress the loop for those two. Leave it alone for the other three.

Questions Hiring Managers Keep Asking

So is Roblox laying anyone off in 2026 or not?

Not in any form that reaches a tracker. Roblox added headcount last year, 24 percent of it, closing at 3,065 full-time employees with more than 2,300 in product and engineering. No announced 2026 workforce reduction exists.

The last notable cut was in September 2023, when roughly 30 talent acquisition roles went as hiring targets came down. That was a recruiting-team correction, not an engineering event, and it has almost nothing to say about the 2026 market.

Then why does the search term keep spiking?

Because the surrounding industry is collapsing and Roblox is the most recognizable name in it. The ASGC tracker forecasts 14,259 games industry job losses in 2026, up 78 percent from January’s projection, with North America absorbing 79 percent of affected workers.

People searching this term are usually one of three groups. Developers, worried they are next. Investors reading the guidance cut as a prelude to cost-cutting. And hiring managers who heard “gaming layoffs” and want to know if there is a bench worth calling about. The third group is right for the wrong reason, which is a fine place to start.

Roblox cut its guidance and its loss widened. Are cuts coming later?

Possible, but the spending pattern argues against it near-term. Roblox posted $596 million in Q1 free cash flow while absorbing the age-check headwind, which is not the profile of a company about to cut engineering to defend a margin.

Worth watching rather than predicting. The bookings guidance cut to 8 to 12 percent growth was severe and the $248 million quarterly net loss included a $57 million settlement accrual. If DAU does not recover the way management expects in the back half, the calculus changes. I wouldn’t build a hiring plan around waiting for it.

Are game engineers actually worth hiring outside of games?

For real-time systems work, they are frequently the strongest candidates in the pool. Engine and networking engineers debug state consistency, latency, and determinism under constraints most web backends never impose, and that intuition transfers directly to fintech, robotics, and live collaborative products.

The honest counterpoint is that some studio engineers have spent years inside a proprietary toolchain and shallow production infrastructure, so their exposure to cloud, CI, and observability practice can be thin. That is fixable. A training gap measured in weeks, not a capability gap. Screen for it, plan for it, and don’t let it talk you out of a good hire.

What is a Luau developer and should I care?

Luau is the scripting language Roblox created, derived from Lua, and the people who ship production experiences in it run live products with real users and real revenue. Creators earned over $1.5 billion through Developer Exchange in fiscal 2025.

Care about it if you hire product engineers. Someone who has operated a live game economy has done pricing, retention analysis, fraud response, and telemetry design without a platform team to hand it to. The language is irrelevant. They will pick your stack up in a month. What you are buying is the operating experience, which is unusually hard to get any other way at that age.

Is now the window, or should we wait for prices to fall further?

Now for three of the five profiles, and waiting is actively costly on the other two. Engine, creator, and platform infrastructure candidates are reachable at sensible numbers today. Trust and safety and 3D generative are seller’s markets that have gotten worse every quarter for two years.

There is also a timing element specific to this cycle. A displaced studio engineer is most reachable in the first ninety days after a closure, before they either take something adjacent or leave the industry entirely. Six months later you are competing with an incumbent employer and a signed offer instead of a severance clock. Ninety days. That’s the window, and it doesn’t reopen.
