U.S. Rust developers earn a median base near $150,000 in 2026, with most offers landing between $125,000 and $190,000. Senior systems and blockchain specialists clear $210,000 to $300,000 in total compensation. The spread is not noise. Rust is a skill that sits inside four barely related jobs, and the job decides the number long before the language does.
I have been staffing technology teams since we started KORE1 in 2005, and I have watched a lot of languages arrive with a salary myth attached. Most of the myths deflate. This one has not. Rust engineers really do cost more than their years of experience suggest they should, and the reason has almost nothing to do with the language being hard to learn. It has to do with how few people have shipped anything serious in it, and with a federal security push that started quietly in 2022 and is now sitting in enterprise roadmap documents.
Now the part where I tell you where my check comes from. KORE1 runs a Rust developer staffing desk inside a broader IT staffing services practice. A bigger salary band means a bigger invoice for us. So treat every number below with the suspicion it deserves. What I will do in exchange is give you the two places in this guide where I think you should spend less, not more, and one of them argues you out of hiring a Rust specialist at all. Those sections cost us money. They are also the reason clients keep calling back.

What Rust Developers Actually Get Paid in 2026
A Rust developer builds software in Rust, a systems programming language that enforces memory safety at compile time without a garbage collector. The work concentrates in performance-sensitive and correctness-sensitive systems. Databases, network proxies, blockchain protocols, device firmware, and cryptographic libraries. Rust rarely appears alone on a résumé. It shows up next to C++, Go, or Solidity, and that neighbor usually explains the salary better than Rust does. Check the neighbor first.
The bands below combine public aggregator data with the systems and infrastructure searches our recruiters have closed across the 30-plus U.S. metros where our technical desks operate. Base only in the third column. Equity and token compensation get their own treatment further down, because on Rust roles they are not a rounding error. On the blockchain side they are frequently most of the offer. Sometimes all of it.

The junior row is the one that surprises people. Start with the floor. There is no cheap end to this market, because there is effectively no junior supply. Nobody graduates as a Rust developer. They arrive as a C++ engineer who got tired of segfaults, or a Go engineer who hit a latency wall, and by the time they can be trusted with unsafe blocks and lifetime annotations they are already a mid-level engineer wearing a junior title. You are not paying for Rust. You are paying for the four years that came before it. Different product entirely.
Three Salary Sites, a $63,000 Disagreement
Search the term and the aggregators do not just disagree. They describe different economies. Salary.com puts the average U.S. Rust developer at $84,327, with a range running from $59,119 to $98,993. ZipRecruiter, as of late July 2026, reads $109,905, with the middle half between $84,000 and $134,500 and the ninetieth percentile at $150,500. Then Glassdoor lands at $147,521, its middle half from $115,358 to $191,054, top earners at $239,248.
Sixty-three thousand dollars separates the low average from the high one. For one job title.
Here is the detail that explains most of it, and it is the kind of thing nobody checks. Glassdoor’s Rust developer figure is built on thirteen self-reported salaries. Thirteen. That is not a labor market. It is a focus group, and if four of those thirteen happen to work at Cloudflare or a well-funded protocol company the average moves twenty grand. Salary.com sits at the other extreme, modeling the title generically against junior software developer bands and catching a lot of people who list Rust as a hobby project rather than a job function. Neither site is lying. Both are counting a population that barely exists as a discrete title.
Start from the honest floor instead. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track Rust as an occupation, so the software developer category is the truthful proxy, with a May 2024 median of $133,080 and 15 percent projected growth from 2024 to 2034 against roughly 129,200 annual openings. Every employer in the country, base pay only. Rust work lands above that midpoint, not below it, and the honest planning number for a competent mid-to-senior generalist in 2026 is around $150,000. Anchor there. Then adjust for the thing that actually moves the number, which is not seniority.
Rust Pay by Experience Level
Junior, zero to two years
$105,000 to $135,000 base, and you will interview a lot of people to find one. The candidates who look junior on paper are usually career changers or new grads from a handful of programs where a professor pushed Rust hard. Their Rust is real but narrow. They can write safe idiomatic code and they will freeze the first time they need to reason about a lifetime across an async boundary. Budget mentoring time, not just salary. Both cost you.
Mid-level, three to five years
$135,000 to $170,000. This is the widest useful band in the guide and the one clients most often anchor too low. A mid-level Rust engineer who has shipped one production service is worth roughly what a senior Go engineer is worth, which feels wrong to a hiring manager reading a résumé with three years on it. It is not wrong. The market cleared that trade a while ago. Anchor higher.
Senior, six to nine years
$165,000 to $205,000 base, $200,000 to $285,000 total where equity is real. At this level the person is not writing Rust so much as deciding what should be written in Rust and what should stay in Python because nobody needs a memory-safe CSV parser. That judgment is most of the value. We placed a senior systems engineer with a fintech client in Charlotte last year who spent the first six weeks arguing them out of rewriting a service that handled forty requests a minute. They were right. They also justified the salary in those six weeks, and nothing they did was technically difficult.
Staff and principal, ten years and up
$200,000 to $250,000 base. Total packages at companies handing out meaningful equity run $270,000 to $400,000 and above. Small pool. When one of these people comes loose it is usually because a protocol company ran out of runway, and they are off the market in under three weeks. If you are recruiting at this level, decide your number before you start, because you will not have time to convene a committee. Move fast.

The Domain Sets the Number, Not the Language
This is the section I would read if I only read one. Rust pay does not fan out by seniority the way most engineering roles do. It fans out by what the code touches. Two engineers with identical résumés, both six years in, both strong, can be $70,000 apart because one writes Solana programs and the other writes firmware for an infusion pump. Same résumé. Different economy.

Notice the bottom row. If you are building a REST API and you picked Rust because your CTO read a benchmark, you are in the cheapest domain on this table and you should be paying accordingly. Plenty of clients do not. They read the blockchain number, assume it is the market rate, and post a req at $200,000 for work a $145,000 engineer would do well and enjoy. Then they wonder why the person they hired left in fourteen months for something harder. Boredom is expensive.
Embedded is the inverse problem. It pays the least of the four and it is frequently the hardest job, because the constraints are brutal and a mistake ships inside a physical device. Defense and medical device employers have gotten used to underpaying for it. That is starting to break, particularly on anything requiring an active clearance, and if you staff embedded systems engineering roles you should expect to pay ten to twenty percent above your 2024 bands.
Why Anyone Pays a Rust Premium at All
Scarcity is the short answer, but scarcity alone does not sustain a premium for six years. Something has to keep demand climbing faster than supply, and for Rust it has been an unusually specific driver: governments and large platform companies deciding that memory-unsafe code is a liability they can measure.
In June 2025 CISA and the NSA published a joint guide, Memory Safe Languages: Reducing Vulnerabilities in Modern Software Development. It followed the 2023 guidance that asked software manufacturers to publish a memory safety roadmap by the end of 2025, and a 2024 White House technical report that named Rust specifically. Read those documents as procurement pressure rather than security advice. That is how the enterprises we staff read them. A roadmap document with a date on it becomes a headcount request about two quarters later. Watch the dates.
Then there is Google’s data, which is the most useful evidence anyone has published. Android’s memory safety vulnerabilities fell from 76 percent of the total in 2019 to under 20 percent by 2025, dropping from 223 in 2019 to fewer than 50 in 2024, over a period when Google moved substantial new development to Rust. Google also reported that Rust changes had a rollback rate four times lower and spent about 25 percent less time in code review. That second finding is the one that convinces CFOs. Security is an argument. Review time is a line item.
Developer sentiment tracks the same way. In the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey, Rust was again the most admired language at 72 percent, and Cargo was the most admired developer tool at 71 percent. Actual usage tells the other half. Only 14.8 percent of all respondents write it, 14.5 percent among professional developers, which puts Rust behind Go at 16.4 percent and a long way behind C++ at 23.5 percent. Among people currently learning to code, though, it hits 23.1 percent. Watch that number.
Admired by most, used by few, learned by many. That combination is exactly what a durable salary premium looks like from the inside.
Rust Developer Pay by Metro
Geography matters less here than on almost any other role we staff, because a large share of Rust work is remote by default. Protocol companies were distributed before it was fashionable. Infrastructure companies followed. Still, the bands move, and the following reflects base pay for a mid-to-senior generalist against a $150,000 national reference point.

The remote row is doing something unusual and it is worth a second. On most of the roles we place, remote bands sit below the national average because employers use distributed hiring to buy cheaper geography. Rust inverts that. The companies most committed to Rust tend to be the companies most committed to distributed teams, so remote Rust roles compete against Bay Area budgets rather than against Denver ones. If you are in a $150,000 market and you assume remote gets you a discount, you will lose candidates to a company in your own city that already figured this out.
San Diego reads low on that table and the number is honest, but it hides a strong defense and medical device concentration where clearance-holding embedded engineers price well above the metro line. Same for Huntsville and the Washington, D.C. corridor, which we left off because the sample gets thin once you filter for Rust specifically.

Base Is Not the Offer
On a Rust req, the base column is the least interesting part of the package, and this is where hiring managers who are used to enterprise IT get blindsided. Three different compensation systems are operating in this market at once.
At an established infrastructure company, the structure looks normal. Base, a ten to twenty percent target bonus, and RSUs vesting over four years that add anywhere from $30,000 to $150,000 a year depending on the employer’s size and how the stock has moved. Predictable. Easy to compete with if you have equity of your own.
At a venture-backed systems startup, base runs lower, often $15,000 to $25,000 under the bands above, and options make up the difference on paper. Candidates in 2026 discount those options heavily, and they are right to. The engineers we place in this segment have watched enough option grants expire worthless that many now negotiate base as though the equity is zero. Assume the same and your offers will land. Price accordingly.
Then there is crypto, which follows no rules the other two would recognize. Token grants with cliff schedules tied to mainnet milestones, sometimes denominated in an asset that did not exist eighteen months ago. A $220,000 base can sit under a total package a candidate describes as $500,000, and both numbers can be true on the day of the offer and false a quarter later. If you are hiring against a protocol company, do not try to match the token. You will lose. Compete on base and stability instead. We have won several searches that way against nominally larger offers, because the candidate had already lived through one of these cycles.
Contract and Freelance Rust Rates
Contract is a legitimate strategy on Rust work, and more clients should use it than do. A memory-safe rewrite of one service, a firmware project with a fixed end date, an audit of an existing codebase. All of that is naturally bounded, and none of it requires you to win a permanent recruiting fight against a protocol company’s equity package. One caution on the corp-to-corp row. The independent Rust consulting market has a wide quality distribution, wider than the rate would suggest, and a $175-an-hour consultant is not reliably better than a $120-an-hour one. Ask for a crate they maintain or a pull request into something you have heard of. Then read it. Ten minutes of reading their actual code tells you more than an hour of conversation, and it is the single best filter we know of on this particular role.
The Advice That Costs Us Money
Most companies asking me about Rust salaries should not be hiring a Rust specialist.
That is the honest version and it is worth more to you than the tables above. If your Rust footprint is one service, or a planned rewrite of one service, the cheaper path is almost always to take a strong C++ or Go engineer you already employ and give them a quarter to become productive. Rust is genuinely hard for the first six weeks. Then it clicks. Genuinely pleasant by twelve. A senior C++ engineer with real systems instincts clears that curve reliably. We have watched clients do it repeatedly, and the ones who did it deliberately, with a book budget and a lowered sprint expectation for one quarter, came out with a Rust capability for roughly the cost of a conference and a slow ninety days. That is cheap.
Compare that to hiring. A senior Rust engineer at $185,000, plus agency fee, plus the ramp time they still need on your domain, and you have spent well over $200,000 to get to a place a $160,000 engineer already on your payroll could have reached by March. The math only flips when the Rust work is your product rather than a component of it, or when correctness failures carry regulatory or financial consequences you cannot absorb during a learning curve. Firmware in a medical device. A validator handling other people’s money. Cryptographic code. In those cases, hire the specialist and stop reading this section.
I am aware of how this sounds coming from someone who sells recruiting. Say the quiet part anyway. We would rather lose a $185,000 placement and keep a client who trusts our numbers for the next decade.
What We Are Seeing on Rust Searches Right Now
Our average time to hire across all IT roles runs about 17 days. Rust does not run at 17 days. Not close. A senior systems search realistically takes five to seven weeks, and that is with a compensation band set correctly on day one. Set it wrong and you can add a month, because the correction cycle on this role is slow. You post, you get thin applicant flow, you assume the market is empty, you wait, and only then do you raise the number.
Three patterns from our desks over the past several quarters. Requests for Rust engineers with security clearance have grown faster than any other subcategory we track, which lines up with the federal roadmap timing rather than being a coincidence. Candidate counteroffer rates are unusually high, because employers holding a working Rust engineer know exactly how hard replacement is. And conversion from contract to direct hire runs well above our book average on these roles, which is why we push clients toward starting on contract when the timeline allows.
Our 92 percent twelve-month retention rate holds on Rust placements, which honestly surprised me the first time we pulled it. It should not have. The general assumption is that scarce specialists are flight risks. What we see instead is that engineers who chose Rust deliberately tend to be engineers who chose the problem deliberately, and they stay where the problem is interesting. Pay them fairly and give them hard work. They are not especially mercenary as a group.
Questions We Get Before the Req Goes Out
What should I budget for one Rust engineer?
Plan on $150,000 base for a solid mid-to-senior generalist, $185,000 if the work is genuinely systems-level. Add 20 to 30 percent for total cost with benefits and payroll burden. Blockchain and protocol roles run higher, embedded runs lower.
The number that gets budgets in trouble is not the salary. It is the assumption that a $130,000 posting will produce candidates. It will produce applicants. Different thing.
Does Rust really pay more than Go or C++?
Yes over Go, by roughly $10,000 to $20,000 at the same level. Against C++ the gap is smaller and sometimes reverses, since senior C++ engineers in finance and gaming already command strong bands.

Can I actually hire a junior Rust developer?
Rarely, and not in the way that question usually means. True junior Rust talent is scarce because Rust is almost nobody’s first language. What exists is mid-level engineers from C++, Go, or Python who are one to two years into Rust.
Hire that person. Title them whatever your bands require. Pay them $135,000 and stop looking for the mythical $95,000 Rust hire, because the people quoting you that number are quoting a job that does not exist.
Which pays more, blockchain Rust or systems Rust?
Blockchain wins on the headline number and loses on reliability. Protocol roles list $180,000 to $240,000 base with token upside that can dwarf it. Systems and infrastructure roles pay $165,000 to $215,000 with compensation that still exists in three years.
I have had candidates take a $30,000 base cut to move from crypto into infrastructure. Twice in the last two years. Both said the same thing about wanting to stop checking a price chart on a Tuesday morning.
How long should a Rust search actually take?
Five to seven weeks for a senior systems role, against our 17-day average across all IT placements. Contract engagements move faster, often two to three weeks, because the candidate pool that will consider contract work is more responsive.
If you are past nine weeks, the problem is almost never sourcing. It is the band, the interview loop, or a requirement nobody has questioned out loud. We usually find it in the job description. Somebody wrote “5+ years of Rust” for a role that needs two, and quietly eliminated eighty percent of the market before the first screen.
Is the premium worth it for a straightforward web API?
Short answer: probably not. Backend Rust roles carry the smallest premium on this page, $130,000 to $165,000, and the performance benefit over Go or a well-tuned JVM service is rarely the thing limiting a typical API.
There are real exceptions. High request volume where per-request cost genuinely matters at your scale, or a service where a memory bug becomes a security incident. Otherwise you are paying a hiring tax for a benchmark you will never notice in production.
Where do Rust engineers actually live?
Supply concentrates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, New York, and Austin. Boston and the Denver-Boulder corridor follow. A large share of the total pool works fully remote regardless of address.
Which means your geographic strategy matters less than your remote policy. A return-to-office mandate will cost you more candidates on this role than on nearly anything else we staff. That is not an opinion about hybrid work. It is just what the pipeline does. Plan around it.
Should I retrain my existing team instead?
Often, yes. If Rust is a component of your product rather than the product itself, giving a senior C++ or Go engineer one quarter to ramp usually beats an external hire on both cost and outcome. They already know your domain, which is the harder half.
The exception is anything where a correctness failure is expensive during the learning curve. Medical devices, financial infrastructure, cryptographic code. Buy the expertise there. Everywhere else, grow it.
Setting Your Band Without Guessing
One thing to take from this guide. The order of operations. Identify the domain first. Set the band from the domain, then adjust for level, then adjust for metro or remote posture. Doing it in the other order, starting from a national average you found on an aggregator, is how a req sits open for four months.
And decide honestly whether you need a Rust specialist or a strong systems engineer who will become one. Most teams need the second. That answer costs us money and saves you a great deal of it.
