IT contractor rates in Nashville run $43 to $52 an hour for a Level 2 help desk technician (median $47) and $89 to $106 for a mid software engineer (median $100), per KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: November 6, 2026

Now the budget view. A Level 2 help desk tech kept for 13 weeks at the median comes to about $24,300. A 3-month, 40-hour-a-week contract for a mid software engineer in Nashville costs about $52,200 at the median bill rate. Both are the whole invoice, with payroll tax and workers’ comp already inside. Nothing gets added later.

Short version? Nashville is a discount. Of the sixteen distinct seats we price here, fourteen bill under the national median, two tie it, and none bill over. The gaps are widest in the senior and project seats. Not in support. A mid IT project manager at $68 is the lowest PM rate anywhere in the index.

KORE1 has been placing technology contractors since 2005, and the people who quote these seats work on our IT staffing in Nashville desk, part of the wider IT staffing services practice, and every quote runs on the same contract staffing terms. One caveat up front. No Nashville seat is observed yet, so read the modeling section before you quote a number to finance.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Nashville?

Twice as much. Nothing clever. Length buys nothing. There’s no volume price in the index, and a mid software engineer comes to about $52,200 for one quarter and $104,500 for two.

The senior line is where Nashville surprises people. A senior engineer here bills only $10 an hour more than a mid one, against a $23 step nationally, so a full quarter of senior help is $57,300. That’s $5,100 more than the mid seat. Hard problem? Buy the senior.

Picture a Cool Springs health care services company rebuilding its revenue reporting with a contract data engineer, a data analyst and an IT project manager to run it. One quarter of that team is about $128,100. Cutovers drift. Let this one reach week 26 and the bill is $256,100, which is why both numbers belong in the budget meeting. For a bigger build, what a contract dev team costs runs the same math, and monthly staff augmentation cost spreads it over a calendar.

Week 26 also matters for a reason that has nothing to do with price. It’s 1,040 hours, and past that point a KORE1 contractor can join your payroll with no fee to us. The process is on the contract-to-hire staffing page.

What Is Inside a Nashville Bill Rate?

Most buyers call the difference between pay and bill a markup. Devin doesn’t. “First off, it’s not a markup,” says Devin Hornick, a partner at KORE1. “Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.”

He builds it from the wage up. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.” That example is Californian. The index uses the same flat 24% in Nashville anyway, which keeps every metro comparable. Hear a percentage from a vendor? Ask what it’s a percentage of. Fair question. Quoted on top of pay, it usually skips the burden, which makes the figure sound smaller than the invoice.

Four payroll costs ride underneath. You won’t see any of them as a line item.

  • Tennessee unemployment tax

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development starts new employers at 2.7%, and the tax applies only to the first $7,000 each worker earns. That low wage base keeps the state’s share small next to the federal taxes. After the first years the rate follows the employer’s own claims history.

  • Workers’ comp

Most Tennessee employers outside construction must carry it once they have five employees, per the state’s workers’ compensation division. On a W2 contract, that premium is ours to pay.

  • No sick leave mandate

Tennessee has no law requiring paid sick leave from private employers, and Tenn. Code Ann. § 7-51-1802 stops Metro Nashville from requiring one. Devin’s 24% is a California figure, and California mandates sick pay. That’s one reason the real burden on a Nashville payroll can run under the flat 24% the index uses.

  • Federal taxes

The employer half of FICA is 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $184,500 plus 1.45% Medicare (IRS Publication 15). FUTA is 6.0% on the first $7,000 of wages, which the state credit cuts to 0.6% (IRS Topic 759). With no Tennessee income tax on wages, nothing is withheld for the state.

Past the legal floor, every firm chooses what else it carries. For our contractors that means fully paid dental and vision, plus liability insurance on each assignment. Coverage varies. Identical hourly quotes can hide very different coverage. Check each one with the contractor burden rate worksheet before you choose.

How Do Nashville Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?

Hatch Show Print has set Nashville’s show posters in wood type since 1879, so here is the comparison as a show bill. Every distinct seat gets top billing in order of how far it runs under the U.S. median.

Each red block is drawn to scale, the full block being $21 an hour. Seats with the same gap are listed by the higher Nashville median. ERP consultants and business systems analysts price the same here, so they share a line.

Fourteen seats under, two level, none over. No way around it. The headliner is the senior software engineer, billing $110 here against $131 nationally, and only Cincinnati is lower. Data engineers, data analysts and IT project managers follow, each $13 under.

Support barely moves. A Level 1 help desk tech bills $38, exactly the national figure, and Level 2 is only $2 under at $47, which still ties Cincinnati and Houston for the lowest Level 2 rate in the index. Business analysts sit level too, at $81. If your plan was to save money on desk-side support by hiring in Nashville, this sheet says the real savings sit in the senior engineering, data and project management seats instead.

Why would senior engineering and project work price so far under? We can’t prove it. Wage data doesn’t show causes. The model starts from what the federal survey says local employers pay each occupation, and about one in eight nonfarm jobs in the metro sits in health care and social assistance, per BLS figures for September 2026. Whatever drives the local wage, the survey has picked it up.

Don’t take the senior engineer discount to the bank yet. A strong senior developer in Franklin or East Nashville can work for a remote team in New York. Plenty do. So the local wage survey probably understates what that person will accept. We’d pressure-test that line before any other on a live req. Our hunch. Not index data.

Nearest big neighbours

Atlanta is the closest larger market, roughly four hours down I-24 and I-75, and it prices well above Nashville on the same seats. It isn’t close. A mid IT project manager bills $82 there and $68 here, a senior accountant $92 against $77, a mid ERP consultant $94 against $79, and a senior software engineer $126 against $110. Charlotte’s senior accountants run $102. Every metro sits side by side in the KORE1 Contract Rate Index, and the neighbours have their own pages for Atlanta bill rates by role and Charlotte contractor rates by role. Modeled, not observed

Why Every Nashville Rate on the Sheet Is Modeled

A seat needs five KORE1 placements in a metro before we call it observed, because one or two placements say more about a single client and a single candidate than about what the market charges. Most KORE1 placements are in Southern California, so a market like Nashville takes a long time to collect five placements in any single seat, and a metro can stay fully modeled for several quarters while that history builds. Nashville hasn’t reached five in any seat yet, which is why the tag sits on every line.

Modeled doesn’t mean invented. Each line starts from what the federal wage survey says Nashville employers pay that occupation, adds the burden, then takes its width from our own billing history. So the controller band is wide and the help desk band is narrow. Treat the median as an opening number. Expect movement.

Real reqs move it. Usually up. The usual reason here? Health care. A data analyst who knows Epic Clarity reporting, a BSA who has worked a revenue cycle, or an accountant who has closed the books at a physician practice group all price over the median, as does anyone who has to start Monday. The other usual miss is a job posted as senior with money for a mid, and we’ll say so when we send the number. Health care systems work comes through healthcare IT staffing, and data and NetSuite seats through more KORE1 staffing in Nashville and our NetSuite desk in Nashville.

Where These Nashville Contract Rates Apply

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Nashville: Which Costs Less?

It turns on two things. How long the work lasts, and how much you already trust the candidate.

  • Hourly, W2

    Contract

Hourly billing that ends with the work. Hire the person yourself after 1,040 hours, fee free.

    How contract works
  • Try, then hire

    Contract-to-hire

A paid trial at the hourly rate. 207 of 552 KORE1 contract-to-hire starts were converted (37.5%).

    Contract-to-hire details
  • One-time fee

    Direct hire

You pay 20% of first-year base once, and a 60-day replacement guarantee covers the hire.

    Direct hire fees

Read 37.5% as a warning. Most trials don’t end in a hire. Plan for that. A headcount plan that counts every contract-to-hire as a future employee will fall short by spring. Already sure about someone? Skip the trial and hire direct.

Work with an end date favors contract. A year-end close at a Brentwood practice management company is one example, and extra hands during a clinic system move in Murfreesboro is another. Billing ends when the job does, but a contract comes with no replacement guarantee, and we tell you that before anything is signed. Direct hire is the bigger check up front, $20,000 for a $100,000 salary, and it’s slower to fill, with a 60-day replacement window. The person stays. The two are priced next to each other in contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost.

Start and length

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Nashville, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Five marks between the first day and fee-free conversion. All five come from every KORE1 contract nationally, because Nashville on its own is too small a sample.

  1. Day 3Median first shift after a signed offer, across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts
  2. Week 13520 hours, the 3-month column on the sheet
  3. Day 116Median KORE1 assignment, from 1,887 that ended
  4. Day 136Median IT assignment, 410 of those 1,887
  5. Week 261,040 hours, when conversion carries no fee
Marks are to scale across 26 weeks on wide screens. The shaded band runs between the two median assignments, and orange marks the 1,040-hour conversion point.

Plan past the first quarter. The median KORE1 contract runs 116 days, and IT work goes longer still, to day 136, which lands in week 20. Approve 13 weeks and you’ll most likely be back in front of the same budget committee asking for an extension in the middle of the job, with the contractor halfway through the work and nobody keen to start over. Ask for 20 weeks up front.

Three days surprises people. It’s real. We count from a signed offer with screening done, so the remaining work is equipment and accounts. The search itself happens before that clock starts, and how fast a contractor can start covers both stretches.

Method

How These Nashville Numbers Are Built

Three steps. Pull each occupation’s hourly wage for the Nashville-Davidson, Murfreesboro and Franklin area out of the May 2025 BLS OEWS wage tables, at the 25th percentile for junior seats, the 50th for mid and the 75th for senior. Add the burden by multiplying by 1.24. Last, stretch that cost into a bill band, sized from the cost-to-bill gaps on real KORE1 placements near the same cost.

Thirteen federal occupation codes feed the sheet. They are 15-1232 for help desk, 15-1244 for systems administrators, 15-1241 for network engineers, 15-1252 for software engineers, 15-1253 for QA, 15-1243 for data engineers, 15-2051 for data analysts, 15-1211 for ERP consultants and business systems analysts, 13-1111 for business analysts, 13-1082 for project managers, 13-2051 for financial analysts, 13-2011 for accountants and 11-3031 for controllers. The security code has no usable Nashville wage in this release, so security is left off rather than guessed.

Some deals stay out. We leave out payroll-only setups, offshore assignments, corp-to-corp deals and odd outliers, because a Nashville buyer is pricing an ordinary W2 contract and those aren’t one. Version 2026-Q4 took effect October 16, 2026. January 2027 brings the next quarterly version. The long version is in how the index is built.
