Almost nobody starts as a cloud architect, and most people reach the title after seven to ten years as a cloud, DevOps, or systems engineer, with base pay running $130,000 to $320,000 across the levels. The climb that sets your ceiling happens before the title, not after it. Which on-ramp you take decides which half of the market will interview you.
Last spring a VP of Infrastructure at a logistics company outside Columbus sent me a req for a junior cloud architect. Budget, $105,000. She wanted three to five years of experience, an AWS certification, and somebody who could own the design for a warehouse management platform coming off two aging data centers.
I called her back and said the job she had written down does not exist at that price, or really at any price, and that the nearest real thing was a strong senior cloud engineer who would grow into the design work over about two years. She hired one. Smart call. He owns that architecture now, eighteen months later, at $148,000.
That req is most of this article.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track “cloud architect” as its own occupation, so the honest public proxy is computer network architects. Median wage there was $130,390 in May 2024, employment is projected up 12 percent between 2024 and 2034, and about 11,200 openings are expected each year. Buried in the same entry is the sentence that matters more than any of those numbers. The federal government lists this occupation as requiring a bachelor’s degree plus years of prior experience in a related job. That is rare. It is one of the few technology titles where Washington openly says you cannot walk in the front door.
Now for my conflict of interest, which is not small. I run technical searches at KORE1, cloud architect reqs land on my desk through our cloud architect staffing practice, and we only get paid when somebody signs. So I have every reason to tell you this field is wide open and you should jump. Watch for the parts where I say the opposite. There is a section below arguing that a certification you may already be studying for will not move your offer, and another one telling you the architect title is a bad fit for a lot of the engineers who chase it. What the Job Is, Once You Take the Title Off It
A cloud architect designs how a company’s systems run on cloud infrastructure and owns the consequences of that design. Network topology, identity and access boundaries, data flows, disaster recovery, and the cost model underneath all of it. They decide. Everyone else builds against it.
Everything else in this article follows from one property of that job. You cannot do it credibly until you have watched a few of your own designs meet production and lose. Lose is the operative word.
Which is why the ladder has no bottom rung, why every attempt to hire a junior architect ends the way that Columbus req ended, and why the on-ramp question is the one that actually decides where you land.
Three On-Ramps, and They Do Not Lead to the Same Place
Ask ten cloud architects how they got in and you get three stories with different endings.
The infrastructure route. Sysadmin, then network or systems engineer, then cloud engineer, then architect. Historically the most common path and still the largest single group. Crowded, though. You arrive fluent in networking, identity, and the physics of moving data, and you tend to be trusted immediately on landing zones, hybrid connectivity, and anything involving a firewall. What follows you around is a suspicion that you cannot read application code. Sometimes fair. Often not, and it still costs offers.
The software route is smaller. And rising. Backend or platform engineer, then somebody who ends up owning the Terraform, then architect. These candidates win the roles where the architecture is really an application problem wearing a cloud costume. Event-driven systems. Multi-tenant products. Anything where the words “we need to redesign how services talk to each other” appear in the first screening call. They lose the enterprise networking roles, badly, and usually do not know why.
Ops and SRE. Third door. It has widened fastest since about 2021. If your day is Kubernetes, observability, incident response, and a Terraform state file nobody else will touch, you are already doing a version of the work. What you are usually missing is the part of the job that happens in a room with a CFO.
Here is why the on-ramp matters more than any of the training sites will tell you. It quietly filters the reqs you can win. Phoenix, last year. A healthcare payer needed an architect for a claims platform migration, and we screened out four candidates in a row. Every certification on the list, all four. The design work turned out to be data residency, HIPAA boundaries, and a hybrid connection into a mainframe that nobody is decommissioning this decade. All four were dev-route architects. Excellent ones. Wrong door for that building. The person who took the job came up through network engineering and had never written production Python in his life.
None of the three doors is better. They are just different. Two years in, most people cannot tell you which one they walked through, and by then it has already shaped the offers arriving in their inbox.
The Rungs, and Why the Bottom One Is Already Senior

Coastal markets and financial services run above these. Higher education, county government, and most nonprofits run below, occasionally by 25 percent for identical scope. Same job. Different building. Run your own situation through the salary benchmark assistant if a national average is not useful to you, which it usually is not.
Sit with that top row for a second. Four to six years, and that is the associate tier. Read it again. There is no row above it labeled junior because there is no such job, and every hiring manager who writes one anyway ends up making the call I described at the top of this piece.
The Two Years That Actually Make an Architect
Something specific happens between senior cloud engineer and architect, and it is not tenure and it is not study.
You own a migration, or a cost crisis, or an outage postmortem that turns into a redesign. Your name goes on it. Somebody with a budget reads that document, argues with it, and eventually funds it. Then you live inside the result for a year and find out which of your assumptions were wrong.
That is the entire conversion. I have placed architects who did it in eighteen months and screened engineers with twelve years who never did it once, because their employer kept handing them well-specified work and calling it seniority.
The cost crisis version is underrated, so let me be specific about one. A fintech client in Charlotte had a monthly AWS bill climbing past $340,000 with revenue flat. A senior engineer on their platform team spent six weeks mapping where the money went and came back with an answer nobody wanted, which was that the bill was mostly cross-availability-zone data transfer created by a service mesh decision made two years earlier by somebody who had since left. He proposed the redesign, took the argument, and got it approved. Annual run rate dropped a little over $2.1 million. Real money. He was a cloud architect eight months later, and not at that company, because they promoted him to Senior Engineer II and handed him a four percent raise. Four percent. On a $2.1 million save. His next employer read one paragraph of that story and skipped straight to a $205,000 offer.
I am overstating the neatness. Slightly. Plenty of good work never gets a document and plenty of documents never get funded. But if you are trying to find the shortest honest distance between where you are and an architect title, it is a design artifact with a number attached, and it is not a course.

Certifications: What They Move, and What They Do Not
This is the section where the training sites and I part company. Sharply.
Certifications do real work for a cloud architect. More than for almost any other engineering title, actually, because the buyer of this role is frequently a non-technical executive who needs a legible signal. An AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional or a Google Professional Cloud Architect reads to that person as proof somebody has designed at scale. I have watched that badge move an offer $20,000 to $40,000. It is not nothing.
What it does not do is create the seat.
AWS itself recommends two or more years of hands-on experience designing and deploying on the platform before you sit for the professional exam. Read that as the vendor telling you the certification is meant to describe an architect, not manufacture one. Candidates who invert that order are the ones I have the uncomfortable calls with. Six certifications, three years of experience, no design artifact, and a screening loop that ends in the first forty minutes when somebody asks how they would handle a region failover for a stateful workload and the answer comes out of a study guide. You can hear it happen.
Platform choice is the bigger lever and gets a fraction of the attention. The 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey put AWS at 43.3 percent of respondents. Azure, 26.3. Google Cloud, 24.6. Those shares roughly predict req volume. AWS gives you the deepest pool of openings and the most competition. Azure concentrates in enterprise, finance, healthcare, and government, which means fewer postings and often less competition per posting. Google Cloud is thinner and spikier, and the people who are genuinely strong on it get chased hard by a smaller set of employers.
One more thing about badges, since it comes up constantly. Multi-cloud on a resume is worth less than people assume unless it is real. Two production environments you have actually designed, not one production and one certification. The tell is fast. Hiring managers catch it within two questions, and the ones who do not will find out during onboarding, which is worse for you than not getting the job.
The Title Inflation Problem Nobody Warns You About
A 45-person startup will absolutely give you the title Cloud Architect.
Take it. Then read this paragraph twice, because it is the trap I see most often in the second half of this career. The title at a small company usually means you are the only person who understands the infrastructure, which is genuinely valuable and looks nothing like the architect job at a 4,000-person enterprise. There, the work is 40 percent governance, standards, and persuading twelve teams who do not report to you. Candidates who spend six years as a solo architect and then interview at scale get surprised by how much of the loop is organizational, not technical, and they interview poorly because nobody told them what was being tested.
The fix is unglamorous. Do three things. Write the standard down even if only four people will follow it. Run a design review with people who can say no. Sit in one procurement conversation. Six months of that reads very differently than six years of being the smartest person in a small room. Where the Road Goes After Architect
Most career guides stop at the title, which is roughly where the useful part starts. The title is a plateau for a lot of people, and it is worth knowing the four exits before you need one.
- Enterprise architect. Broader than cloud, and more political. You own how the whole technology estate fits together, cloud included. Pay is comparable to principal, sometimes better, and the day is mostly meetings. Some engineers find this deeply satisfying. Others last a year.
- Principal or distinguished IC. Stay technical, go deeper, keep the terminal. Fewer seats. They mostly exist at larger technology employers. If the reason you like this work is the systems and not the influence, aim here and stop apologizing for it.
- Engineering leadership. Director of Cloud Platform, VP of Infrastructure. Different job entirely. Budget, headcount, hiring, and performance conversations, with your technical judgment now applied through other people. The architects who do well here are the ones who already liked the persuasion half of the job.
- Independent consulting is the fourth, and the one people romanticize. Experienced cloud architects with a real specialty bill $150 to $275 an hour, and migration and cost-optimization work is steady enough to keep a good one booked. It trades security for ceiling. It suits maybe one in ten, and the other nine miss having a team.
There is a fifth outcome that nobody puts on a roadmap slide, which is staying a cloud architect for fifteen years, getting steadily better at it, and being very well paid the entire time. That is not a failure state. I would guess a third of the strong architects I know are doing exactly that on purpose.
What Candidates Ask Me on Almost Every Cloud Search
Realistically, how long from where I am now to an architect title?
Seven to ten years total experience for most people, and two to four years from a senior cloud engineer seat if you are deliberate about it. Faster if you land a migration early.
The variable is not study hours. It is whether your employer lets you own a design that has money and risk attached. Some companies hand that out at year five. Others protect it for a decade. If you have asked twice and been redirected to implementation work both times, the company is the constraint, and moving somewhere messier is usually faster than waiting somewhere tidy.
Can I get there without a degree?
Yes, though it is harder here than in adjacent roles. Cloud architect is a title bought by executives and enterprises, and both groups use degrees as a filter more often than engineering managers do.
I have placed architects without degrees. Every one of them had something else doing the work a degree does, usually a well-known employer on the resume or a certification portfolio plus a public track record. Federal contractors and defense work will hard-require it. Large banks and insurers often will. Startups and mid-market rarely care. If you are self-taught and aiming at enterprise, finishing a bachelor’s part-time in your thirties removes a ceiling you will otherwise keep bumping into.
Cloud engineer or DevOps engineer, which is the better on-ramp?
Cloud engineer is the more direct feeder, since the work is already infrastructure design. DevOps and SRE arrive with stronger automation and incident instincts but usually need to build the cost and governance half.
Honestly, the difference is smaller than the job boards make it look, and the titles are used so loosely that I read the responsibilities and ignore the header. What I look for in either resume is the same thing. Did this person decide something, or did they execute something somebody else decided? If you are choosing between two offers with those two titles, take whichever one puts you closer to the design conversation, even if the other pays $8,000 more. Companies weighing how to staff this kind of work should look at direct hire staffing for the architect seat itself, and at cloud engineer staffing for the feeder roles underneath it.
Is AI going to make this role smaller?
It is changing what the job produces, not whether it exists. Generating a Terraform module or a reference diagram is now nearly free. What has not moved is deciding whether that architecture should exist, and being accountable when it fails.
If anything the demand pressure is running the other way, because AI workloads are pushing companies into infrastructure decisions they are not equipped to make. GPU capacity planning, data gravity, inference cost modeling, and where a model can legally run are all cloud architecture questions, and they are landing on desks that were already full. The engineers who should worry are the ones whose value is producing artifacts quickly. That was true before 2023. It just arrives faster now.
I have been a senior cloud engineer for five years. Why am I not getting architect interviews?
Your resume, almost certainly. Not the experience behind it. Senior engineers describe what they built. Architects describe what they decided and what it cost. Same career, different sentence structure.
Go find the biggest decision you made in the last three years and write one line about the tradeoff you chose, the option you rejected, and the number that moved. If you cannot find that decision, that is real information and the fix is a project, not a rewrite. If you can find it and it simply was not on the page, you have been screened out by keyword filters for something you actually did, and I see that constantly. The candidates who fix this line typically start getting calls within a few weeks.
Does the interview loop look different from an engineering loop?
Very. Expect an open-ended system design session with deliberately incomplete requirements, a cost or tradeoff discussion, and at least one stakeholder conversation testing whether you can explain a decision to someone non-technical.
What almost nobody prepares for is the pushback round, where an interviewer disagrees with a correct answer to see what you do. Defending too hard fails it. Folding immediately fails it worse. If You Only Change One Thing
Open your resume and look for a sentence describing a decision you made, the alternative you turned down, and what it cost or saved.
Not a technology you used. A decision you owned.
If that sentence is missing, you have found the gap, and it is not a certification and it is not another year of tenure. The cloud architect market in 2026 is strong at the top, thin in the middle, and completely fictional at the bottom, and the only reliable way through it is work where the calls were yours.
