IT contractor rates in Raleigh-Durham run $44 to $56 an hour for a Level 2 help desk technician (median $49) and $94 to $119 for a mid software engineer (median $105), per KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: November 4, 2026

Put that in budget terms. As of October 16, 2026, three months of the help desk seat comes to about $25,600 and the engineer to about $54,800, both at 40 hours a week and the median rate. That’s the whole bill. Wages, payroll taxes and workers’ compensation are already inside it.

The Triangle lands almost exactly on the national medians. So the more useful question is the other big market in the state. Charlotte bills $19 an hour more for a senior accountant and $11 more for a mid network engineer, yet it bills $11 less for a mid systems administrator. If you run IT or finance at a 600-person company in Cary or Durham, that split tells you which seats are cheap to fill locally and which ones aren’t.

KORE1 has recruited technology talent since 2005. These numbers sit beside our IT staffing in Raleigh-Durham desk, the wider IT staffing services team and the contract staffing terms behind every quote.

Two caveats before the table. Every line is modeled. And the model reads the Raleigh-Cary wage area, not Durham’s. Both are explained further down.

The rate sheet

What Does a Contract IT Worker Cost per Hour in Raleigh-Durham in 2026?

Twelve seats, laid out like a fair premium list. The North Carolina State Fair has been held in Raleigh since 1853, and each year it prints a book of departments, classes and what each one pays (the State Library keeps the 1924 premium list online). Each range below spans the 25th to 75th percentile of expected bills, and totals assume 520 hours for 13 weeks or 1,040 for 26.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Raleigh-Durham?

Roughly double. We don’t knock anything off for the longer commitment, so the mid software engineer who costs about $54,800 for a quarter costs $109,500 for two, and a senior is $66,200 and $132,300.

Help desk is cheaper, obviously, though a Level 3 tech isn’t nothing at $32,200 a quarter and $64,500 for six months. You’re paying for someone who takes the tickets the first two tiers gave up on.

Where it adds up is a project crew. We see this shape a lot with plants. A biomanufacturer in Holly Springs swaps its finance module onto a new ERP, keeps its own IT people on the validated systems, and brings in three contractors for go-live, a mid ERP consultant, a mid sysadmin and a Level 2 help desk tech. About $113,000 for 13 weeks. If the go-live date moves (they usually do) and all three stay to week 26, call it $226,000, and honestly we’d ask for that second number on day one. Manufacturing ERP staffing covers who else that project tends to need, the contract development team cost page does team math for developers, and the staff augmentation cost breakdown shows it monthly.

The 26-week mark matters for one more reason. After 1,040 hours a KORE1 contractor can move onto your payroll without a conversion fee, which our contract-to-hire staffing page explains.

What Is Inside a Raleigh-Durham Bill Rate?

Buyers usually call the gap between pay and bill a markup, and Devin Hornick, a partner at KORE1, pushes back on that word before anything else. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.”

Then he walks through the arithmetic, starting from wages. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.” He was describing a California assignment, and the index applies that same flat 24% in North Carolina so that a Raleigh line can be read side by side with a Charlotte or Atlanta line. When a vendor quotes you a percentage, ask what number it was taken from, since a quoted markup often leaves the burden out.

Here’s the North Carolina payroll underneath. None of it gets its own invoice line.

  • State unemployment

A new North Carolina employer pays 1.0% on the first $34,200 of each worker’s 2026 wages, per the NC Division of Employment Security. Experienced employers get their own rate.

  • Workers’ compensation

A business with three or more employees has to carry it. A W2 contractor sits on the staffing firm’s policy, not yours.

  • Federal payroll tax

IRS Publication 15 sets Social Security at 6.2% of wages up to $184,500, plus 1.45% for Medicare. FUTA adds 6.0% on the first $7,000, or 0.6% net after the state credit (IRS Topic 759).

Then come the choices a firm makes for itself. KORE1 pays for contractor dental and vision in full and carries liability cover on each assignment, so two quotes with the same hourly number can buy different things. Read the contractor burden rate breakdown before you compare them. Short read.

Against the U.S. and Charlotte

How Do Raleigh-Durham Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?

Same model, same levels, three wage areas, sorted by the Charlotte gap. Each ribbon runs from the centre line on a $20 scale per side.

  • The Triangle bills less
  • Charlotte bills less

Help desk, Level 2$49$49$48 Charlotte $1 less
Help desk, Level 3$62$61$59 Charlotte $3 less
Systems administrator, mid$82$79$71 Charlotte $11 less

Nationally, there’s not much to say. Three seats tie the U.S. median, four are a dollar to three over, five are under, and Level 2 help desk sits at $49 in both. The one real gap is the mid network engineer, $96 here and $106 nationally, which is a bigger miss than we expected for a metro this technical.

Charlotte’s more interesting. A senior accountant there bills $102 against $83 here, which over 13 weeks is about $9,800, and that’s the banking market showing up in finance pay. Network engineers lean the same way. Sysadmins go the other way entirely ($82 in the Triangle, $71 in Charlotte), so a 13-week sysadmin contract costs about $5,600 more here, which surprises people. If you’ve got offices in both cities, price the seat in both before you decide where it lives.

We’d be careful with that sysadmin line, for what it’s worth. The model reads Raleigh-Cary wages, and those put local systems administrators above the national median. It can’t see a Durham sysadmin weighing a remote offer from a Charlotte bank. That’s our read, not an index number, and it’s the first thing we’d test on a live req.

Every metro lines up in the KORE1 Contract Rate Index by city, and national tech contractor hourly rates covers the wider field. Atlanta, the nearest other Southeast metro on the index, has its own page at IT contractor rates in Atlanta. For a support seat, monthly help desk seat cost does the conversion, and network engineer contract bill rates carries the national tiers for that line.

Modeled, and which wage area

Why Every Raleigh-Durham Rate on the Sheet Is Modeled

Plain answer. We don’t have enough placements here yet. Most KORE1 placements are in Southern California, and the index won’t print an observed cell until a role reaches five placements in a metro. No Triangle role has. So each line carries a Modeled tag, and we’d rather you see that than assume otherwise.

The second caveat matters more if you’re in Durham. The federal wage survey treats the Triangle as two metros, Raleigh-Cary and Durham-Chapel Hill, and this sheet is built on the Raleigh-Cary wages. Durham runs a little higher for developers. BLS puts the median software developer wage there at $135,620 a year, against $132,770 in Raleigh-Cary (May 2025). If the seat sits in Durham, Chapel Hill or most of Research Triangle Park, expect a quote at or a bit above these lines.

Then your req moves it. GMP validation experience at a Morrisville or Holly Springs life sciences company pushes a BSA quote up, and so does a rare SAP or Veeva skill, or a start date next Monday. The most common problem we catch is simpler, a title that says senior on a budget that says mid, and we’ll flag it before any number reaches your team. National pricing for nearby seats is in project manager contract rates, business analyst contract bill rates and help desk contract bill rates by level.

Where These Raleigh-Durham Contract Rates Apply

The sheet prices the Raleigh-Cary wage area directly. Durham and Orange County sit in their own BLS area, so we quote those seats from that area’s wages.

  • Downtown Raleigh and Glenwood Southstate government, professional firms and tech offices
  • North Hills and Midtowncorporate offices, banks and health care administration
  • Cary and Morrisvillesoftware companies and corporate campuses
  • Apex and Holly Springsbiomanufacturing and the systems behind the plants
  • Wake Forest and Knightdalegrowing suburbs, clinics and distribution
  • Clayton and Johnston Countypharmaceutical manufacturing and its plant systems
  • Durham, Chapel Hill and RTPa separate BLS wage area, quoted on its own wages
  • Charlotte and the Triadoutside this wage area, so they get their own quote

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Raleigh-Durham: Which Costs Less?

It depends on how long the seat lasts and how sure you are about the person. Line all three up against your own calendar.

  • Hourly, W2

    Contract

Billed by the hour and finished when the work is. Conversion carries no fee once a contractor passes 1,040 hours.

    How contract works
  • Try, then hire

    Contract-to-hire

The hourly bill runs through the trial. In KORE1 records, 207 of 552 such placements converted (37.5%).

    Contract-to-hire details
  • One-time fee

    Direct hire

A single fee of 20% of first-year base salary, with a 60-day replacement guarantee behind it.

    Direct hire fees

Read that 37.5% twice. Most contract-to-hire placements never convert, so a headcount plan that counts on them has a hole in it. If you already know you want this person for years, go direct.

Length is the cleanest test. A validation push before an FDA inspection in Research Triangle Park, or a help desk surge during a Cary office move, suits contract, because the bill stops when the work does, though nothing guarantees a replacement if the fit is wrong and we say that up front. Direct hire is a different bet. You wait longer and pay a $20,000 fee on a $100,000 base, and you get a 60-day replacement window and an employee who stays after the project wraps. The side-by-side is in contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost.

Start and length

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Raleigh-Durham, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Five dates, from first shift to free conversion. These come from KORE1 placement records across every metro we staff, not the Triangle alone.

  1. Day 3Median first shift after a signed offer, across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts
  2. Week 13520 hours, the 3-month column on the sheet
  3. Day 116Median KORE1 assignment, from 1,887 that ended
  4. Day 136Median IT assignment, 410 of those 1,887
  5. Week 261,040 hours, when conversion carries no fee
Stops are to scale across 26 weeks on wide screens. The shaded band runs between the two median assignments, and orange marks the 1,040-hour conversion point.

Budget past the 13-week column. A median IT assignment ends on day 136, well into week 20, so a one-quarter approval usually runs out while the contractor is still working. Ask for the extension language when you ask for the money. One request, not two.

Three days surprises people. That’s the gap after a signed offer, when screening is done and only your access and equipment are left. How long the search takes before the offer is a separate question, and how fast a contractor can start walks through both.

Method

How These Raleigh-Durham Numbers Are Built

Three steps. Start with the Raleigh-Cary hourly wage from the May 2025 BLS OEWS wage tables, taking the 25th percentile for junior and Level 1, the median for mid and Level 2, or the 75th for senior and Level 3. Multiply by 1.24 for burden. Then apply the bill-to-cost spread KORE1 sees on its own placements at a similar cost level. That’s it.

Eight occupation codes feed this sheet, 15-1232 for help desk, 15-1241 for network engineers, 15-1244 for systems administrators, 15-1252 for software engineers, 15-1211 for ERP consultants and business systems analysts, 13-1082 for project managers, 13-2011 for accountants and 11-3031 for controllers.

Some deals stay out. We filter out payroll-only arrangements, offshore and corp-to-corp deals, and anything whose bill and pay sit unusually far apart, since those would pull the medians toward setups no Triangle controller is actually pricing for an ordinary W2 contract. Version 2026-Q4 took effect on October 16, 2026, and the next refresh is January 2027. The full write-up is in how the index is built.

Questions

Common Questions
