What Wins AI Staffing in Portland Is the Take-Home, Not the Salary

Oregon’s top bracket and Multnomah County’s preschool tax both switch on at $125,000, which is about where every AI salary in this metro begins. Eight miles north, across the Columbia, neither one applies. Your finalists do that math before they answer. We do it before the offer goes out.

$126,120

Median pay for computer and mathematical work in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro, per the BLS wage figures for May 2025. The national median for that group is $109,280. The typical tech worker here already sits right on the threshold.

13.9%

State and local tax on the top dollar of a single filer living in Multnomah County once salary passes $250,000. Oregon 9.9, Metro 1.0, the county preschool tax 3.0. In Vancouver the same figure on wages is zero.

93,700

Washington residents who worked in Oregon in 2023, according to Oregon’s labor market analysts. Clark County residents account for 61.2% of the Oregon income tax that Washingtonians owe.

The problem

Portland AI Salaries Start Exactly Where Three Taxes Do

Most markets let you compare offers in gross. This one doesn’t. Oregon’s 9.9% bracket starts at $125,000 of taxable income for a single filer, and Multnomah County’s Preschool for All tax adds 1.5% from that same dollar. Metro’s housing tax adds another 1% from $128,000 this year.

Nearly every AI hire in this metro lands above those numbers. A mid-level machine learning engineer does. So does a data scientist four years in. The whole band sits on top of the stack.

Meanwhile a candidate who lives in Vancouver and works from home owes Washington nothing on wages. Same job, same employer, a different paycheck, sometimes by thousands of dollars a year, and the gap is set by an address and a calendar rather than by anything printed on your offer letter.

Gross gets the interview. Net gets the signature.

Where the bench came from

Hillsboro Trained Applied ML Engineers Long Before Anyone Used the Title

Intel’s Hillsboro and Aloha campuses have run computer vision on wafer inspection and statistical models on fab yield for decades. That’s applied machine learning. It just never said so on a badge. Nobody minded. Lam Research, Siemens EDA in Wilsonville and the supplier base around them did the same kind of work.

Then came 2025. Intel filed layoff notices for 529 Oregon workers in July and 669 more in November, and a lot of people who had spent ten years building models on process data were suddenly taking calls.

Add Nike’s digital teams in Beaverton, the research groups at OHSU on Marquam Hill and Daimler Truck North America on Swan Island. The bench is real. It’s filed under semiconductor, sportswear and hospital titles.

The arithmetic candidates run

One Offer, Four Addresses

Each row is the same $100 of salary earned above the thresholds, on the same offer letter, drawn to scale. Only two things change. Where the person sleeps, and how many days a week they badge into an Oregon office. Nothing else moves.

Top-dollar marginal rates for a single filer in 2026, from the Portland Revenue Division and the Oregon Department of Revenue. Federal tax is identical in every row, so it’s left out. This is arithmetic, not tax advice. Orange marks a day in an Oregon office, which is the one input in this whole table the employer sets.

The lever you hold

The Badge Day Is the Only Tax Line an Employer Controls

Oregon taxes a nonresident only on wages for the days they actually work in Oregon. Vacation and sick days don’t count on either side of the ratio. For a Vancouver engineer, a three-day hybrid rule isn’t a culture question. It’s roughly six cents of every dollar above the threshold. That adds up fast.

So put the schedule in the offer. The number of days, and the building. A Vancouver finalist weighing a remote offer against a Hillsboro hybrid one is comparing two different salaries, whatever the two letters say.

The reverse holds too. Oregon residents pay the same whatever the schedule, so for someone living in Beaverton or Southeast Portland an office day costs commute time on the Sunset Highway or the Ross Island Bridge rather than tax. Different candidates. Different levers.

Roles we staff

Six AI Seats Portland Employers Ask Us to Fill

Grouped by what the person produces. Titles vary too much. The orange card is the one seat where the schedule isn’t up for discussion, because the equipment never leaves the building.

01

Machine Learning Engineer

Turns a trained model into a service somebody else can call at 3am. Usually PyTorch, usually on whatever cloud the company already signed with.

02

LLM and Applied AI Engineer

Retrieval, evaluation, agent workflows. At Portland’s retailers and health systems, the data contract is usually harder than the prompt.

03 · onsite by necessity

Computer Vision and Yield ML

Defect detection on wafer and panel images, wired to tools on a fab floor. See our computer vision engineer staffing practice. Every badge day here is real.

04

MLOps and Platform

Registries, monitoring, rollback. Whether a pilot survives its second quarter comes down to this hire, which is why MLOps engineer staffing is its own search.

05

Applied Data Scientist

Forecasting, experimentation and demand models for the sportswear, outdoor and retail brands clustered around Beaverton.

06

Research Scientist, Applied AI

Graduate-level method work with a product date attached. Often out of OHSU or a semiconductor research group.

Screening for each seat is written up on our pages for machine learning engineer staffing, LLM engineer staffing or generative AI engineer staffing.

How we run intake

We Price the Offer in Net Before Anyone Sees It

At intake we ask three things most recruiters skip. Where the likely candidates actually live, which county the office sits in, and how many days a week the hiring manager genuinely needs people in the room rather than on a video call.

Then you see the offer twice. Once as the letter will read, once as each likely finalist will read it. Usually the gap is small. Worth knowing anyway. Sometimes it’s a Vancouver candidate being asked to absorb a four-figure cut for a hybrid rule nobody on the team would defend out loud.

The fix is rarely more money. It’s a remote Friday, a Hillsboro desk instead of a downtown one, or a signing bonus that covers the first year. Cheap moves.

Coverage

Four Parts of the Metro, Four Different Tax Stacks

One commute radius, and a different set of local taxes in each part of it. We tag every submarket with the stack a resident pays. Candidates already know theirs.

oregon 9.9 · metro 1.0 · county 1.5 to 3.0

Downtown, the Pearl and the Central Eastside

Software, retail tech and agency work, plus the research and clinical teams around OHSU. The full stack applies to residents, and to anyone badging in from outside the county on those days.

oregon 9.9 · metro 1.0

Hillsboro and the Sunset Corridor

Intel’s Ronler Acres and Aloha campuses, the Hillsboro data center campuses, and the tool and design software suppliers running south toward Wilsonville. Washington County, so no county preschool tax.

oregon 9.9 · metro 1.0

Beaverton, Tigard and Lake Oswego

Nike’s world headquarters and the outdoor and apparel brands around it, plus plenty of senior engineers who chose the school districts. Consumer data science and personalization work concentrate here.

Outside AI, our Portland coverage runs through IT staffing in Portland, engineering staffing in Portland and ERP staffing in Portland.

Engagement

Contract, Direct Hire or a Fixed Project

The recruiters stay the same in all three. What changes is how the person gets paid and where they sit while doing the work, and in this metro those two things can move the take-home about as much as the hourly rate itself.

Pilot funded, headcount not

Contract and Contract-to-Hire

A W-2 contractor living in Vancouver and working remotely keeps more of a given rate than the same person on a downtown badge. We quote with that in mind, so the rate you approve is the rate that closes.

Contract Staffing →

Built to stay past the pilot

Direct Hire

Platform owners, ML leads, and the evaluation engineer who’ll still be defending this model in 2028. We build those offers in net from the first conversation.

Direct Hire Staffing →

Scope first, then a finish line

Project and Statement of Work

A yield model that has to be production-ready before a tool install. An LLM pilot that needs a yes or a no by quarter end. Scoped, priced, finished. Then it ends.

Questions

Common Questions

How much does an AI engineer cost in Portland?

Most Portland AI hires land between the local software developer median of $156,000 and its 90th percentile of $213,540, per May 2025 federal wage data, and research scientist roles run higher.

Computer and information research scientists here carry a $206,220 median. What none of those figures show is take-home. Every one of them sits above the $125,000 point where Oregon’s top bracket starts, so two finalists at the same salary can walk away with noticeably different money. We work that out at intake, so the band you approve is the one that actually closes. Plan for it.

Do Vancouver, Washington residents pay Oregon income tax?

Only on wages for the days they actually work in Oregon. Days worked from home in Washington aren’t taxed by Oregon, and Washington has no income tax on wages.

That turns the hybrid schedule into a pay term for anyone living north of the river. Three office days a week puts roughly 60% of their wages inside Oregon’s reach, plus Metro’s tax when the office sits inside the Metro boundary and the county preschool tax when it’s in Multnomah County. Candidates here know this cold. Your letter should too. Most don’t.

Does the Multnomah County preschool tax hit people who live outside the county?

Yes, on income earned inside the county. The Preschool for All tax is 1.5% above $125,000 for a single filer and 3% above $250,000, whether you live in Multnomah County or just work there.

In August 2026 the county board pushed a scheduled 0.8 point increase back to January 2028. Metro’s housing tax treats nonresidents the same way, at 1% above $128,000 this year and $132,000 in 2027. An office in Hillsboro or Beaverton sits outside Multnomah County, so for commuters the county tax simply doesn’t apply there.

Why has our Portland machine learning req been sitting open for months?

In Portland it’s usually the schedule or the band. Either the hybrid rule quietly costs your strongest candidates money, or the band was built from a general tech average instead of the software developer figures AI hires actually track.

That general average misleads in a specific way here. Computer and mathematical work pays a $126,120 median in this metro, while software developers alone sit at $156,000. Anchor to the first and you’re about thirty thousand dollars light before anyone negotiates. We’ll also read the posting for filters that knock out people who could do the job, like a degree clause, or a framework any strong engineer learns in a week.

Can we recruit the engineers Intel laid off?

Yes, and many of them are strong applied ML candidates. Years of defect detection, process control and yield modeling carry straight into computer vision and forecasting work, even when the old title said process engineer.

Two cautions. Check any noncompete or notice terms early. Some will want work that still touches hardware. Ask what they built and how they knew it worked. Not what the badge said.

Can AI roles in Portland be fully remote?

Many can. Platform, LLM and data science work often runs remote or one day a week, while anything tied to fab equipment, lab instruments or patient records usually needs people on site.

Whichever way you go, write the days and the building into the posting. A Vancouver candidate reads an unspecified hybrid rule as an unknown tax bill, and an Oregon resident reads it as an unknown commute. Neither one waits around for the final round to find out which. Say it up front.

How fast will we see candidates?

We average 17 days from intake to a Portland shortlist good enough for a panel interview, and 92% of the people hired off it are still employed there after twelve months.

Platform and LLM roles tend to move faster. Vision roles tied to a fab floor move slower, since the pool is smaller, almost everyone in it is employed, and the people worth hiring usually want to see the tool before they’ll talk about money. If the band, the schedule and the market don’t line up, you’ll hear it during intake week, while it’s still cheap to change.

Send us the offer as written. We’ll send it back the way your finalist will read it.

Tell us the role, the approved band, the office address and how many days a week you need people in it. You get back a count of who’s realistically available at that number here, the take-home each likely finalist would see, and the one term worth changing before the letter goes out.
