By Jennifer Burdick, Recruiting Manager, KORE1
An Azure cloud engineer in the United States earns about $130,000 to $135,000 in base pay in 2026, but Salary.com’s experience bands run from $83,092 under one year to $171,783 past eight years. The platform name explains little of that spread. Experience, job title, and the state on the offer letter explain much more, and this page puts a dollar figure on each one, along with the Azure certifications Microsoft retired this year.
Azure requisitions reach my desk at KORE1 in every shape, and the title on the form tells me almost nothing about the job. One wants a help desk lead who inherited a tenant nobody documented. Another wants a platform engineer to own AKS upgrades before the next audit, and a third wants its Entra ID cleanup finished before the examiners arrive. Each of those requisitions says Azure cloud engineer at the top. The pay differs.
Here is a scenario I built for the arithmetic, so no client file sits behind it. A freight broker in Akron, Ohio, posts an Azure cloud engineer seat at $125,000 because the HR director copied the first number from the first salary page that loaded. The figure looks defensible, since it falls between the $130,175 median at Talent.com and the $120,828 that Salary.com reports for its 25th percentile, and nobody in the budget meeting questions it. Then the interviews begin. The people who can take over a production tenant turn out to have six or seven years behind them. Salary.com prices that band at $151,232, which leaves the posting about $26,000 short before anyone has mentioned a bonus or a start date. The posting read the market correctly and the person incorrectly.
You should know who wrote this. KORE1 runs an Azure cloud engineer staffing desk, and we earn a fee when a client hires an engineer we introduced. Every figure below comes from a public source that I link, so you can check my math without calling me.

Azure Cloud Engineer Salary by Source
Azure cloud engineer salary is what an employer pays a person to design, build, and run workloads on Microsoft Azure, from virtual networks and Entra ID to AKS clusters and Bicep pipelines. Read every figure below as a base pay estimate, not as total compensation.
| Source | What it reports | Read it with this in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Salary.com, Azure Engineer, as of November 1, 2026 | Average and median both $134,810. The 10th to 90th percentile runs $108,098 to $164,189 | One value printed as both average and median. No sample size shown |
| Talent.com, Azure cloud engineer, 2026 | Median $130,175 from 10,000 salaries. Low $101,875, high $177,880 | The page does not say what its low and high mean, so do not read them as percentiles |
| BLS, network and computer systems administrators, May 2025 | Median $99,130. The 10th percentile is under $62,640 and the 90th is over $155,050 | The whole occupation, not Azure. BLS has no cloud engineer category |
| BLS, computer network architects, May 2025 | Median $134,050. The 10th percentile is under $79,900 and the 90th is over $202,680 | The nearest federal match for design-level cloud work. Also the whole occupation |
The two private sites land about $4,600 apart. The federal rows sit lower, as they should, because BLS counts every administrator in the country, from the person running a county file server to the one keeping a hospital network alive.
Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, and Built In are missing from that table on purpose. All three refused an automated read of their current Azure pages while I built this guide, and I will not repeat a number I have not seen myself. Our guide to hiring Azure cloud engineers quotes Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter figures from earlier this year if you want them.
Azure Salary by Job Title
The table lists Salary.com averages for six Azure titles, all pulled on the same day.
| Salary.com title | Average | 10th to 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|
| Azure Administrator | $162,209 | $131,760 to $194,104 |
| Azure DevOps Engineer | $136,295 | $108,404 to $153,277 |
| Azure Engineer | $134,810 | $108,098 to $164,189 |
| Azure Developer | $119,915 | $103,103 to $136,349 |
| Azure Architect | $118,709 | $102,065 to $134,976 |
| Azure Security Engineer | $108,145 | $87,576 to $124,913 |
The architect row is the odd one. On that site the Azure Architect averages $43,500 less than the Azure Administrator, and anyone who has hired in this space knows the architect is not the junior seat. I cannot see the samples behind any of these pages, so I will not guess at why they order themselves this way. What I can do is tell you how I use them. I never price a seat from one title page, I pull two or three, and I ask which one matches the duties in the posting. For the design-level end of the range, our cloud architect salary guide covers the people who draw the landing zone instead of operating it.
Azure Salary by Years of Experience
Salary.com splits its Azure Engineer page into five experience bands. The spread from the bottom band to the top is $88,691, which is larger than the gap between the best and worst state, or between any two metros in the table further down.
| Experience | Average salary | Step up from the band before |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 year | $83,092 | None |
| 1 to 2 years | $100,814 | $17,722 |
| 2 to 4 years | $135,195 | $34,381 |
| 5 to 8 years | $151,232 | $16,037 |
| Over 8 years | $171,783 | $20,551 |
The two-to-four-year band carries a step of $34,381, the largest of the four. Salary.com does not explain it, so this part is my reading from the desk. That is the stretch where an engineer stops closing tickets and starts owning something that breaks on a Saturday, and employers pay for the second job. I may be overstating it.
One more line on the same page deserves a caution label. Salary.com lists biotechnology at $202,215 for the Azure Engineer title, about 50 percent above its own average. An industry premium that large is plausible for regulated work, and I have no way to check the sample behind it, so treat it as a direction and not as a budget.
Azure Salary by State and Metro
Where an engineer lives matters, though less than how long they have run production. Salary.com puts the District of Columbia at $149,262, California at $148,695, and Massachusetts at $146,714, while Mississippi sits last on the page at $120,224. The best state beats the worst by $29,038, and experience moves pay about three times as far.
| Metro, Salary.com Azure Engineer | Average salary |
|---|---|
| San Jose, CA | $170,036 |
| San Francisco, CA | $168,174 |
| Seattle, WA | $149,019 |
| Los Angeles, CA | $148,952 |
| Washington, DC | $148,453 |
| Chicago, IL | $139,313 |
| Denver, CO | $137,439 |
| Austin, TX | $133,475 |
| Dallas, TX | $133,125 |
| Atlanta, GA | $132,006 |
Seattle and Atlanta are $17,013 apart. Seattle sits beside Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, which makes it the platform’s home market. The two salary sites also disagree about Washington. Salary.com says $146,174 and Talent.com says $134,288, a gap of $11,886 inside one state.
Here is the trap. Salary.com does not cross experience with city, so a Dallas figure of $133,125 blends every Azure engineer in the metro, juniors included, and a posting for a six-year engineer built from that one number starts $18,107 below the national figure for that experience band. Nothing on the page tells you whether Dallas narrows that gap or widens it.

Azure Certifications Microsoft Retired in 2026
If your job description lists AZ-500, it asks for something no candidate can earn this fall. Microsoft’s retired exams page shows the damage across the Azure catalog.
| Exam | Credential | Retired |
|---|---|---|
| DP-100 | Azure Data Scientist Associate | June 1, 2026 |
| AI-102 | Azure AI Engineer Associate | June 30, 2026 |
| AI-900 | Azure AI Fundamentals | June 30, 2026 |
| AZ-204 | Azure Developer Associate | July 31, 2026 |
| AZ-500 | Azure Security Engineer Associate | August 31, 2026 |
| AZ-800 and AZ-801 | Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate | September 30, 2026 |
The AZ-500 page is blunt. “You will no longer be able to earn or renew this certification after this date.” Microsoft’s successor for security work is the Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate, earned with SC-500. In the developer lane, Microsoft now offers AI-200 for the Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate and AI-103 for the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate.
Microsoft’s catalog still lists AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-400, and AZ-900 with no retirement notice. Look at AZ-104 closely. Microsoft lists its renewal frequency as 12 months, renewable at no cost through an online assessment, so the date on that credential tells you more than the code does.
Does it change pay? I went looking for a source that separates what a certification adds from what the experience behind it adds, and I did not find one. Training vendors publish premium percentages. They also sell the exams. My practical advice is smaller than that. Delete retired exam codes from the requirement line and ask for the work instead, such as Conditional Access policy, Key Vault ownership, or an AKS upgrade someone has actually run. Our cloud security engineer salary guide covers the seat that AZ-500 used to describe.
What Separates a High Azure Offer From an Average One
The Salary.com 90th percentile for the Azure Engineer title is $164,189. The same site puts the Azure Administrator 90th percentile at $194,104, and BLS reports more than $202,680 at the 90th percentile for network architects. Nothing in the public data says why one engineer reaches those numbers.
From the desk, four things keep showing up. Hybrid identity, meaning Entra ID tied to an on-premises directory that somebody built in 2012. A production AKS platform with real upgrade history. Work on Azure OpenAI or Foundry that goes past a prototype. And sovereign cloud, GCC High in particular, where citizenship and clearance rules shrink the pool fast. None of that appears on a salary page. Our Azure hiring guide sorts these into four lanes, with a band for each.
The platform itself buys little. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, 27.2 percent of professional developers reported using Azure, against 45.9 percent for AWS and 24.3 percent for Google Cloud. A skill that common does not earn a premium by existing. Depth does.
Contract seats follow a similar logic. We do not publish an Azure-only bill rate, because our placement records do not support a separate one, and our cloud engineer contract bill rates index prices cloud and DevOps as one family. For the broader market picture across all three clouds, see the cloud engineer salary guide.

Pricing the Akron Seat Step by Step
Go back to the freight broker and price the seat properly. It takes four moves, and every input is a figure from the tables above.
| Move | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Start with the experience band for a six-year engineer | Salary.com, 5 to 8 years, national | $151,232 |
| Scale to Ohio | Ohio $131,264 divided by national $134,810, about 0.974 | $147,255 |
| Sanity check against the national 75th percentile | $150,188 | $2,933 below it |
| Compare with the posted number | $125,000 | $22,255 short |
The method is crude. It assumes Ohio discounts every experience band by the same 2.6 percent, and Salary.com gives me no way to test that. A crude method that exposes a $22,000 gap still beats a posting built from one number.
If the broker cannot pay $147,000, the honest fix is to rewrite the job and not to hope that a six-year engineer accepts $125,000 out of loyalty to freight. Ask for a three-year engineer instead, apply the same Ohio scaling to the $135,195 band, and the answer is about $131,639, which is still $6,639 above the original posting but a number a finance team can plausibly approve. That change also tells you what to drop from the duties, because the engineer at that level will not be the person redesigning the tenant’s management group structure.
Things Candidates Bring Up Once the Number Is on the Table
Does an Azure cloud engineer out-earn an AWS engineer?
Not by any margin I can document, because we have no placement data that supports a separate Azure number. The gaps between job titles on one site are larger than any platform gap I could verify. Depth on the stack sets the price.
Azure administrator or Azure cloud engineer, which title pays more?
On Salary.com, the Azure Administrator page averages $162,209 and the Azure Engineer page averages $134,810, so the administrator wins by $27,399. Do not read that as a rule. The administrator page and the engineer page may be describing different people, and I cannot see either sample.
Do I still put AZ-500 on the job description?
Remove AZ-500 from the posting, because Microsoft retired the exam on August 31, 2026, and nobody can earn or renew it now. Ask for the work instead, or name SC-500 if you want a credential line.
What does an entry-level Azure cloud engineer make?
Salary.com puts the average at $83,092 under one year of experience and $100,814 at one to two years. The lowest figure on Talent.com is $101,875. The distance between those numbers tells you how much the job title is doing and how little the platform is.
How high does Azure engineer pay go?
The top of the range is $164,189 at the 90th percentile for the Azure Engineer title on Salary.com, and $194,104 for the Azure Administrator title. BLS reports more than $202,680 at the 90th percentile for network architects. Those are base figures, and bonus or equity would sit on top.
Should a remote hire be paid on their state or mine?
Pick one rule and write it down before the first offer. The data will not pick for you, because the best state beats the worst by $29,038 and experience moves pay by $88,691. A consistent rule costs less than explaining two different offers to the same team.
Set the Band From the Seat, Then Check It Against Three Pages
Write the band from the seat you need filled. Which scope the engineer owns, how many years they have carried production, and whether identity, AKS, or AI work sits inside the job. Then test that band against three public pages, not one, and see where it lands.
If you want a second read, send the posting to our Azure recruiting team and we will tell you which of those six titles it most resembles. For a quick comparison across other roles, the salary benchmark assistant is free. Whether the seat should be a direct hire or a contract engagement usually depends on how long the Azure project runs, not on the salary.
Our own figures are 17 days for the average IT search and a 92 percent retention rate at one year. Neither is a salary, and both are worth asking any recruiter about before you hand over a requisition.
