Integration engineers earn $78,873 to $139,132 in base pay across four experience levels in 2026, a $60,259 ladder. A req with no level on it prices at $80,395, which is the bottom rung, and that omission kills more of these searches than the budget does.

A client sent me a req in July with $85,000 on it. Senior integration engineer. MuleSoft, two ERPs, forty-some live interfaces, on-call rotation. Their compensation team had pulled the number off a benchmarking tool that morning and it was, technically, correct.

It was also the salary of a person who has been doing this for eighteen months.

That happens constantly and almost nobody catches it, because the tool did exactly what it was asked. Somebody typed “Integration Engineer” into a comp database, the database returned the figure it holds for an unleveled title, and the unleveled title in most of these systems is functionally the entry seat. Go look. Salary.com’s Integration Engineer page reports an average base of $80,395 as of August 1, 2026. Their Integration Engineer I page, same website, same August refresh, scoped to zero through two years of experience, reports $78,873.

Fifteen hundred dollars apart. One of those is supposed to describe an entry hire. The other is supposed to describe everybody.

Worth saying where I sit before you read further. I run partnership success at KORE1, our integration engineer staffing desk works these reqs across more than 30 U.S. metros, and nobody here gets paid until a candidate signs an offer. A page telling you this role costs more than you budgeted is therefore a page written by an interested party. Every number below has a source on it. And there is a question near the end where my honest answer is that you may not need to hire anyone.

Four Rungs Wearing One Job Title

Salary.com keeps a leveled ladder for this role that almost nobody consults, because those pages sit two clicks deeper than the one that ranks. The full ladder sits below. One tracker, one refresh date.

Read the bottom row against the top one. The generic title sits $1,522 above the entry level and $28,228 below the rung most of these job descriptions are actually describing. One row. Two different jobs.

Sixty thousand two hundred fifty-nine dollars separates rung one from rung four. That spread is wider than the equivalent gap on most mid-market technical titles, including solutions architect, and it exists because integration work compounds in a way that feature work does not. A backend developer ships something and moves on. An integration engineer ships an interface and then owns it, plus every interface they shipped before it. That compounding is also why the seat is worth filling properly, and how we staff the role starts from the failure path rather than from a tool list. Four years in the job is not harder. It is forty times larger, and the market is pricing surface area rather than difficulty.

Two Trackers, $54,608 Apart, Both Right

Glassdoor puts the same unleveled title at $135,003 in average total pay for 2026, with a 25th percentile of $106,370 and a 90th of $215,130. Salary.com says $80,395. The gap is $54,608 and it is not a data quality problem. Both numbers are real.

Salary.com’s number describes a job spec. Glassdoor’s describes a person. Job specs get written for the role somebody wants at the price they hoped to pay, and the people who bother submitting a salary to Glassdoor skew senior, skew urban, and skew toward the ones who feel good about their number. Neither population is the truth. They are the two ends of it.

Shape tells you more than level here. Salary.com’s middle fifty percent spans $12,631. Glassdoor’s spans $66,689. Five times wider, on the same job title, from a sample of humans instead of a sample of postings, which is about the clearest signal available that “integration engineer” is not one job.

There is a structural reason the two cannot converge. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no occupation code for integration engineering. The work gets absorbed into software developers, where the May 2025 median was $135,980, or into the wider computer and information technology pool, where the median was $109,470. Every commercial tracker is building a definition on top of that void. They disagree because they are answering different questions.

For completeness, ZipRecruiter lands near $124,275, roughly $59.75 an hour, scraped from active job ads. Those tilt toward whoever is advertising hardest at the moment, which is not the same thing as the market.

Count the Interfaces Before You Write the Band

Years of experience is a proxy. A decent one, and it is what the trackers can measure, but it is not the thing that actually moves an integration engineer between rungs. What moves them is how much surface they can hold at once without dropping any of it.

So count. Before the req goes to finance, get four answers out of whoever owns the systems today.

  • How many interfaces are live right now. Not planned. Live, in production, somebody’s phone rings if they stop.
  • How many of those cross a company boundary. An internal NetSuite to Snowflake feed is one kind of problem. An X12 850 arriving from a retailer who revised their companion guide without telling anyone is a different kind, and the second kind is where the money is.
  • Whether this person carries the pager. If they do, you are hiring for the run and not the build, and the run is a permanent job.
  • What happens on the worst day. A failed marketing sync gets fixed Monday. A failed 856 advance ship notice gets you retailer chargebacks and a phone call from your own CFO.

An estate of twelve or fewer internal interfaces with no external counterparties is rung two work. Twenty-five to fifty interfaces, a handful of trading partners, on-call in rotation, that is rung three, and it is where most of the reqs that reach my desk actually sit. Past that, once the count runs into the hundreds with a cutover on the calendar, you are shopping at rung four whether the budget says so or not. The budget usually loses.

I am simplifying. One Kafka topic feeding nine consumers is not a single interface in any meaningful sense, and anyone who has run a Confluent cluster will happily tell me so. The count is still the fastest honest instrument I have found, and it costs one conversation.

Naming the Platform Is Worth About $23,000

Same tracker, same August 1 refresh. MuleSoft Developer averages $103,296. Generic Integration Engineer averages $80,395. Nothing about the work changed. One title names a product with a licensing bill attached and the other does not.

Glassdoor’s incumbent-reported data shows the same pattern at a higher altitude.

Systems Integration Engineer at $144,872 is mostly a different profession from the rest of that list. Hardware in the loop, test benches, requirements traceability. If your posting says systems and you mean Salesforce talking to SAP, you will get resumes from people who integrate radar. Actual radar.

Certifications come up in every one of these searches and the answer is duller than anyone wants. A MuleSoft or Boomi credential tells you somebody sat an exam. It does not tell you whether they have run a cutover weekend. I will take an uncertified engineer who can walk me through a rollback they personally executed over a certified one who cannot, and I have lost that argument with clients often enough to keep making it.

Geography Moves This Number Less Than You Think

Location is the second question every hiring manager asks, right after the band. It matters roughly two and a half times less than the rung does.

San Jose to Charlotte is $23,700, about 31%. Rung one to rung four is $60,259, about 76%. Level is worth two and a half times what the zip code is worth, and level is the variable you actually control when you write the posting. So write it down.

Orange County lands ten points over national, which surprises people who expect Irvine, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa to price like the Bay Area. They do not. Medical device and consumer products employers here compete for integration talent against each other rather than against platform companies in San Jose, and the ceiling shows it.

What the Engagement Model Does to the Number

Convert the base first, because that conversion is where most contract conversations go sideways. Rung three at $108,623 is about $52 an hour of raw base. Rung four at $139,132 is about $67.

W-2 bill rates usually land at 1.5 to 1.75 times that number, so figure $78 to $91 an hour for rung three build work and $100 to $117 for someone who has personally carried a cutover weekend. Above that band you are buying a specific platform scarcity or a specific deadline. Sometimes both.

Then run the break-even, which almost nobody does before signing. A rung three contractor at $85 an hour, full time, costs roughly $176,800 across a year. That same person as an employee costs $108,623 in base, or about $141,000 once you load taxes and benefits at a typical thirty percent. The premium is near enough $36,000 a year.

Thirty-six thousand dollars buys optionality, and optionality is worth paying for when the work genuinely ends. A platform migration. An acquisition folding one order flow into another. Middleware that went end of life and took its support contract with it. Contract staffing exists for exactly that shape, and the premium is the price of not carrying the seat afterward.

The arithmetic turns on you when the estate was never going to shrink. Interfaces do not retire on their own. Run the break-even before the second extension rather than the fourth, because $36,000 a year compounds quietly and the contractor works it out well before finance does.

Direct hire is where a permanent estate belongs, and contract-to-hire is the honest middle if you want the conversion price agreed in writing on day one instead of negotiated in month five. Integration reqs track close to that when the level is written on the posting and drift noticeably longer when it is not, mostly because the first three candidates decline on money that was never realistic.

What Hiring Managers Ask Us About This Role

We already posted at $85,000 and got nobody. What went wrong?

You posted a rung three job at a rung one price. $85,000 sits inside the entry band, and the description almost certainly asked for multiple platforms and production ownership, which is $108,623 territory at the midpoint.

Candidates at that level read the requirements before the number, and the mismatch reads as a company that does not know what it is buying. Which is worse than a low offer. A low offer gets negotiated. A confused one gets ignored.

Is an integration engineer just a developer with a different hat?

Different job, and the difference is ownership duration. A developer ships a feature and moves to the next one, while an integration engineer ships an interface and then keeps it, alongside every interface shipped before it.

That accumulation is the entire economic story of the role. It also explains why the good ones are so hard to pull out of a company they have been at for six years. Leaving means handing somebody a map nobody else has read.

How many interfaces is too many for one person?

Fifty is roughly where we start seeing people fail, and the number drops fast once external trading partners enter the picture, because partners revise their specifications on their own schedule and you learn about it when something breaks.

Internal-only estates stretch much further. I have watched one person hold seventy-plus internal feeds comfortably, because nothing changed underneath them without a ticket first. Swap thirty of those for retailer EDI connections and the same person is underwater within a quarter.

Do the vendor certifications actually change what we pay?

They move the title benchmark about $23,000, since MuleSoft Developer prices at $103,296 against $80,395 for the generic title on the same tracker. Whether they change what you get is a separate question.

Certifications are a supply signal more than a skill signal. Gated ecosystems produce fewer certified people. Fewer certified people means a higher clearing price, and that holds whether or not the credential predicts performance. Screen for the cutover story. Pay for the platform.

Nobody on my team can technically screen this. Where do I start?

Ask what broke and what they did about it. Anyone who has owned production integrations carries a specific failure story, an order that posted twice, a partner who silently changed a delimiter, a token that expired over a holiday weekend.

Someone who has only built will answer in architecture. Boxes, arrows, patterns. Someone who has run it answers with a timestamp and a bad night. You do not need to follow the technology to hear that difference, and it is a fifteen minute screen. Can we skip the hire and let the iPaaS vendor’s professional services team do it?

For a bounded build, often yes, and I would not talk you out of it. Vendor services teams know their own product better than nearly anyone you will hire, and they will get the initial interfaces standing.

Then they leave. What stays behind is a working estate with no institutional memory attached, and the first time a partner changes a spec you are opening a support ticket for something that should take twenty minutes. Some companies are genuinely fine with that trade. If your integration count is under ten and none of them face a customer, you probably do not need a full-time person at all, and I would rather say so now than place somebody you resent paying next year.

Does remote move the number?

Less than for any other technical role we recruit. Integration work is asynchronous by nature and the artifacts all live in a repository, so the geographic arbitrage employers hoped for never really materialized here.

Your candidate pool changes considerably though. A rung four engineer in Charlotte still costs rung four money, so the savings people imagine are mostly not there. What remote actually buys is access to the rung four engineers who were never going to relocate for anybody, and nationally there are far more of those than exist inside any single metro.

Putting a Number on the Seat You Actually Have

Write the level on the req. That is most of the fix. Not the years of experience, which candidates discount anyway, but the rung, so the person pricing it in your comp system pulls the right row instead of the default one.

Then count the interfaces and ask who gets paged. Those two answers move the band further than the city, the certification, or the tenure, and getting them takes one conversation with whoever owns the systems today. Skip that and the tracker hands you $80,395, which is a real number describing a real job. Probably not yours.
