AWS solutions architects average $145,725 to $176,595 in 2026 depending on which aggregator you trust, while architects employed by AWS itself clear a $262,000 median in total compensation. Both figures are accurate. They describe two different jobs wearing the same title.
Last spring I had two AWS Solutions Architect reqs open in the same week. One came from a regional health system in Phoenix that needed someone to govern a sprawl of accounts nobody had inventoried since 2021. Budget was $165,000. The other came from a consulting partner whose architects sit in front of prospects three days a week and get measured on pipeline influence. Their number, with variable comp, cleared $290,000. Same week. Same skill set on paper.
Same title on both reqs. Same certification asked for. Nothing else in common.
I run KORE1’s IT staffing desk and we place architects across more than 30 U.S. metros. The single most expensive mistake I watch hiring teams make on this role is not lowballing. It is benchmarking against a blended national average that quietly mixes those two populations together and produces a number that fits neither.
Fair warning before you read further. We earn a fee when a company hires through us, so read the recommendations with that in mind and check the sources yourself. They are all linked.

Two Jobs, One Job Title
Strip the branding away. There are two labor markets here, not one.
The first sits on the vendor side. These architects work for Amazon Web Services directly, or for a Premier Tier partner, or for an ISV whose product runs on AWS. Their week is customer meetings, workload assessments, proof-of-concept builds, and helping a sales team get a deal unstuck. Quota-adjacent, essentially. Compensation is structured like a technical seller’s, which means base is only part of it. Equity and variable pay carry real weight.
The second sits on the customer side. These are the architects at a hospital network, a payments company, a specialty retailer. They design and govern the environment their employer already owns and pays for. Nobody is measuring their pipeline influence. They are measured on whether the Landing Zone holds, whether the security review passes, and whether the Aurora bill stops climbing. Different scoreboard entirely.

Almost every published salary figure for this role blends the two. Every one I checked did. That is the whole reason the public numbers look like they were generated by a random number function.
Why No Two Published Averages Agree
Five sources. Five different answers. I pulled all of these in August 2026 rather than trusting anything cached.

Look at the BLS row for a second. The Bureau puts the tenth percentile at $79,520 and the ninetieth at $198,030 inside one occupational code. That is a category holding a small-town network engineer and a principal cloud architect in the same bucket, and it is the closest thing the federal government publishes to an official number for this work. Growth in that category runs 12 percent through 2034 on the Bureau’s own projection, roughly 11,200 openings a year, which is a genuinely useful signal about the direction of demand and a completely useless input to an offer letter. Directionally right. Practically empty.
Here is my favorite piece of evidence that these tools are measuring language and not labor. ZipRecruiter maintains two separate pages for this role. One is titled “AWS Solutions Architect” and reports $145,725. The other is titled “AWS Solution Architect,” singular, and reports $136,232. Same site, same month, same job. A missing letter is worth $9,493. One letter.
Nobody is being dishonest. The scrapers key on the exact string in the posting, and hiring managers do not spell the title consistently. Worth remembering the next time somebody drops a single number into a comp discussion as though it settled something.
What AWS Pays Its Own Architects
The vendor-side number is the cleanest data in this guide. Verified offers, not recollections. Levels.fyi asks for the offer letter instead of asking people what they think they make, which is why its distribution behaves like a distribution and not like a rumor. As of August 2026 the sample sits at 76 U.S. packages for Amazon Solution Architects.

Read the base column, then read the stock column, then read them together. At L4 the equity is 11 percent of the package and you could almost ignore it. At L7 it is 41 percent, and the base has only moved $101,000 across four levels while total compensation has moved $272,000. The promotion is in the grant. Not the title.
That split is the part that catches customer-side employers off guard. A director at a manufacturer tells me they are prepared to go to $210,000 for a strong candidate coming out of AWS, and they think that is aggressive because it beats the person’s $201,000 base. It does. It also asks them to give up $98,300 a year in stock. That conversation goes badly if nobody has looked at the split beforehand. Ask early.

What the Rest of the Market Pays
Back to earth. This is the side most reqs are actually on.
Customer-side AWS solutions architect roles cluster tightly around a $150,000 base, and the level bands below come from reconciling the three customer-side aggregator distributions against what we see close on our own desk. The variance is wider at the top of the range than at the bottom, which is what you would expect from any role where the senior population is small enough that two unusual offers can move a percentile.

Two notes on the top band. That number is real. It is also rare, because most companies convinced they need a $230,000 architect actually need a $170,000 architect plus one executive willing to stop overruling them in design reviews, and that second thing does not come out of the same budget line.
The 25th-to-75th spread that Glassdoor reports, $145,437 to $216,804, tracks these bands closely once you accept that their sample leans senior. Talent.com’s floor of $124,688 is the more honest read on where an associate actually lands. Trust the floor. If you are hiring your first cloud architect and the posting says “5+ years AWS,” you are shopping in the $165,000 to $200,000 row whether the budget says so or not.
The Certification Numbers Everyone Quotes Are Global Averages
This one costs real money. It is almost never disclosed properly.
Skillsoft’s IT Skills and Salary survey is the source behind most of the AWS certification salary charts floating around LinkedIn. It reports that AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate holders average $99,410, and that Professional holders average $155,905. Those get screenshotted constantly.
They are global averages. Skillsoft says so plainly in the methodology, and the AWS-certified subsample is 651 respondents worldwide, spanning markets where a strong architect earns a third of a U.S. salary. Reading $99,410 as a U.S. associate-level number puts you $20,000 to $35,000 low, and I have watched a hiring manager anchor an offer to it. The candidate declined in under an hour. Politely. Firmly.

The internal spread is what to take from that table, not the absolute figures. Professional-level credentials sit roughly 57 percent above the associate line in the same survey, in the same currency, across the same respondent pool. Direction is trustworthy. Magnitude is not portable to a Chicago offer.
Per AWS’s own exam pages, SAA-C03 runs 130 minutes across 65 questions, costs $150, and needs 720 out of 1,000 to pass. SAP-C02 runs 180 minutes and 75 questions, costs $300, and needs 750. Plenty of study sites still quote 170 minutes for the Professional exam. Check the AWS page, not the study site.
What I actually tell clients about certifications is unglamorous. Pay a premium for the credential when it is attached to a story. A candidate who took SAP-C02 because a migration forced them into hybrid connectivity problems they could not solve is worth the bump. A candidate with five badges and one employer is worth a longer interview, not a bigger offer. Geography Splits the Two Markets Cleanly
Here is where the two-market split stops being a theory. The numbers do it for me.
Customer-side pay moves hard with location. Talent.com’s 2026 state medians put California at $181,188 and Texas at $129,050. That is a $52,138 gap for the same job title on the same platform in the same year.

New York below Illinois surprises people. Massachusetts below Georgia surprises them more. Neither figure is an error. Both are artifacts of what gets posted rather than what gets paid, and both correct themselves the moment you filter down to financial services in Manhattan or biotech along the Cambridge and Kendall Square corridor, where the high column rather than the median is what actually clears. Read the median as a market signal and the high column as your real ceiling.
Now the vendor side, from the same Levels.fyi dataset, same week.

Dallas out-earns Seattle. Barely, but still. By two thousand dollars, which is noise, but that is the point. Amazon runs a leveled global band and adjusts modestly for locality, so a Solution Architect in Texas takes home roughly what one in Washington does. On the customer side, that same Texas-to-Washington move is worth $32,030 in the opposite direction.
Hiring in Irvine, San Diego, or anywhere across Southern California? Your competition is not the three local companies you assume it is. It is a remote vendor-side offer already sitting in the candidate’s inbox at a number your finance team has not seen this year. Contract Rates, and the $70 Problem
ZipRecruiter’s contract page for this role reports an average of $70.17 an hour, with a 25th-to-75th band of $60.58 to $79.81.
Do not build a rate card off that. Not for a U.S. hire.
The problem is what it is averaging. That figure pools 1099 hourly work, W-2 staffing placements, and offshore engagements into one number, and it lands well under what a U.S.-based architect with multi-account governance experience will accept for a defined-scope engagement. In our own placements, a senior AWS architect on a W-2 contract generally lands between $95 and $130 an hour depending on metro and clearance requirements, and short-duration migration work prices higher than that because the architect is pricing the gap between engagements into the rate.
The arithmetic hiring managers usually skip. A $175,000 base is about $84 an hour on 2,080 hours before you add anything. Add employer payroll taxes, health benefits, paid time off, the 401(k) match, and the fully loaded internal cost of carrying a seat on the org chart, and the real hourly number a $175,000 employee costs you is much closer to $110 than to $84. A contract architect at $115 an hour is not a premium. It is roughly parity with an employee, purchased without a twelve-month commitment.
Where contract genuinely wins is scope with an end date. A Landing Zone build. A data center exit. A single acquisition folded into an existing Organization. Clear start, clear finish. If someone in-house will own the environment afterward, contract staffing is the honest answer. If that owner does not exist yet, you are buying a temporary fix for a permanent gap, and direct hire is cheaper over eighteen months even though it looks more expensive on day one.
Pricing the Req
Short version, because this part does not need a framework.
Decide which market you are hiring from before anyone writes a number down. If the person will spend their week with your engineers and your auditors, price against the customer-side table. If they will spend it in front of customers, you are competing with AWS and its partners, and $180,000 will not get you a callback.
Then post a range. Always. Colorado, California, New York, Washington, and a lengthening list of other jurisdictions require a posted range anyway, and candidates at this level of the market have simply stopped clicking on postings that do not carry one. A tight, honest band outperforms a wide, defensive one. We track this on our own reqs and the pattern holds.
Last thing, and it is the cheapest one on this list. Move fast once you have found the person. Senior AWS architects with genuine multi-account experience typically hold more than one active conversation, and our average time-to-hire across IT searches is 17 days for a reason. It is not that we source faster than everyone else. It is that the clients who close in 17 days had their comp band settled before the first interview. What Comes Up When a Client Prices This Seat
We budgeted $150,000. Does that get us anybody good?
In most of the country, yes, for a mid-level architect with three to six years on AWS. It will not clear in California, where the state median sits at $181,188, and it will not compete for anyone coming off a vendor-side team. Where $150,000 does work well is a Texas, Georgia, or Midwest search for someone ready to step up into their first architect title.
Why is the AWS number on Levels.fyi so much higher than everywhere else?
Because it is total compensation for one employer, not base salary across a market. Amazon’s median Solution Architect package is $262,000, but only $195,000 of that is base. The rest is stock, and it vests on a schedule that punishes leaving early. Comparing it to a $155,500 base figure from a job-posting scraper is comparing two different quantities.
Do we need the Professional certification or is Associate enough?
Associate is enough for most first architect hires, and insisting on SAP-C02 will shrink your candidate pool sharply for a signal you can test for directly. Ask the depth questions instead. The Professional credential earns its premium on governance-heavy roles, hybrid connectivity, and large migrations, which is roughly the top third of the reqs we see.
Our AWS bill is the actual problem. Is an architect the fix?
Sometimes, and sometimes you want a FinOps specialist instead, which is a cheaper and faster hire. An architect fixes the structural cost problems, the oversized instance families nobody rightsized after the last big launch, the missing S3 lifecycle policies, and the data transfer patterns quietly crossing Availability Zones for no reason anybody can still explain. They do not fix a governance vacuum where nobody has authority to tell a team no. Figure out which one you have.
Remote or on-site, and does it change the number?
Remote widens the pool considerably and does not reliably lower the offer, which disappoints people who were hoping for both. What remote does change is your competition. Open the req nationally and you are no longer bidding against the three companies in your metro that need this skill set, you are bidding against every remote AWS role in the country, including vendor-side ones carrying equity you cannot match.
How does this compare to a cloud architect or a plain solutions architect?
The titles overlap heavily and the pay bands sit within about ten percent of each other at the same level. Platform specificity is worth a modest premium in an all-AWS shop and worth nothing in a genuinely mixed environment. What is the fastest way to know if our band is wrong?
Count your declines at the offer stage over the last two searches. One decline is a candidate. Three is a band. If people are dropping out after the final round rather than during screening, the problem is almost never your interview process, and it is almost always the number you were never going to reach.
Before You Post It
This role has one honest answer to the salary question and it starts with a question back. Vendor side, or customer side?
Get that right and the rest of the exercise is arithmetic. A customer-side senior architect in most U.S. metros costs $165,000 to $200,000 in base, plus a bonus, and closes in a few weeks if the number is real. A vendor-side hire costs more than twice that in total compensation and you are unlikely to win it without equity. Get it wrong and you will spend a quarter interviewing strong people who politely decline, and conclude there is a talent shortage.
That conclusion is almost always wrong. What you have is a pricing problem wearing a talent-shortage costume.
