A DevOps engineer career path runs junior to senior in about five to seven years, after which the title usually changes to platform engineer, site reliability engineer, or cloud infrastructure engineer. Base pay runs roughly $81,000 to $220,000, and what moves it is how much breaks when you are wrong.
I have been recruiting for fourteen years and spent almost thirteen of them at KORE1, running delivery across tech, engineering, finance, HR, and operations. DevOps reqs are the ones where the job description and the actual job have drifted furthest apart. Wildly so.
An example. Last spring I ran two searches in the same month, both titled DevOps Engineer, both asking for five years. One paid $118,000 to maintain a Jenkins install and a handful of Ansible playbooks for an internal tooling group. The other paid $186,000 to own the Kubernetes platform ninety engineers deployed through, with a pager wired to a checkout flow. Same title. Same experience line. Nothing else matched.
So the honest answer to “what is the DevOps career path” is that the ladder you are climbing has very little to do with the words on your offer letter. It has to do with what falls over when you get something wrong, and how much of the company notices.
One disclosure before anything else, since it should color how you read the rest. I run delivery for KORE1’s DevOps engineer staffing practice, which sits under the firm’s wider IT staffing group, and a signed offer pays us. Factor that in. A fair number of people read a piece like this and use it to argue for a raise at the job they already have. That earns us nothing and is often the smarter play.

Nobody Promotes You. The Blast Radius Does.
Every DevOps promotion conversation I have ever sat in came down to one question, even when nobody phrased it that way. If this person is wrong at 2 a.m., how far does it go? That is the whole test.
Junior means the pipeline breaks and a build is late. Mid means an environment is down and a team is blocked for the afternoon. Senior means production degrades and customers file tickets. Staff means the platform itself is the incident, every team is affected at once, and somebody in finance is going to ask about it on Monday.
That is the ladder. The rest is decoration.
It explains something that frustrates a lot of engineers I talk to. You can learn Terraform, Kubernetes, Argo CD, and three cloud providers, put all of it on a resume, and still get screened out of a senior role because every one of those skills was exercised inside a sandbox nobody depended on. The tooling list is not the qualification. Never was. Being trusted with something expensive is the qualification, and you only get that by being handed it and not dropping it.
Which leaves anybody trying to move up on a schedule stuck in a chicken-and-egg problem. More on that below.
Four Bands, and What Goes Wrong at Each One
The numbers below are our composite from Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, Built In, PayScale, and Salary.com, and they match what we see land on offer letters. They are base only. Our full DevOps engineer salary guide breaks them out by city and by skill.

Now compare that against what engineers report themselves. The 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, which drew 49,006 responses, puts the United States median for a DevOps engineer at $165,000 and for a cloud infrastructure engineer at $189,000. That is well above our mid-level band, and it is not a contradiction. Survey respondents skew senior, skew tech-company, and skew coastal. Job boards skew toward whatever a company hopes it can pay. Both are honest. Neither is complete.
The variance is the useful part. If a recruiter quotes you $132,000 and a survey says $165,000, nobody is lying to you. Neither number is wrong. They are describing different populations, and the one you belong to is decided by scope.
The government view is broader still. DevOps engineer has no occupation code of its own, so it gets counted under Software Developers, where O*NET reports a 2025 median of $135,980 and about 115,200 openings a year through 2034. When a number somebody quoted you feels wrong, our salary benchmark tool settles it faster than arguing about which site is right.
Three Titles Are Quietly Absorbing This Job
Somewhere around year five or six, most people on this path stop being hired as DevOps engineers. Not because the work disappeared. Because the work got big enough that companies started naming it after the thing being built rather than the philosophy behind it.
Kubernetes is the substrate under all three of the successor titles now. The CNCF 2025 annual survey put production use at 82% of container users, up from 66% two years earlier, and found 66% of organizations running generative AI models are serving at least some inference on it. Being the engineer who knows what happens when a node pool full of GPUs gets preempted is a narrow specialty right now. It prices like one.

The middle one gets confused with plain DevOps constantly, by hiring managers as much as by candidates, and it costs both sides interview cycles. We wrote up DevOps vs SRE separately for that reason.

One caution before you chase a title. I have placed engineers into platform engineering teams that were four people supporting three hundred, and I have placed engineers into “platform” teams that were two people who renamed the ops queue. The second kind pays like ops and stalls like ops. Ask two questions. How many internal customers does the team have, and how does it measure whether those customers are happy? If nobody can answer, it is a rename.
The Skill That Moves an Offer Is Not Terraform
Everybody at the mid level has Terraform. It stopped being a differentiator around 2022. Table stakes now.
The two things I watch swing offers, consistently, are cost and consequence. Both. Every time.
Cost first, because it is easier to prove. Two years ago I placed an engineer at a healthcare analytics company off a fairly ordinary resume. In the third interview he walked the hiring manager through a batch job that had been spinning up on-demand GPU instances and never scaling them down over weekends, and what killing that pattern took off the monthly bill. Right around $38,000 a month. He landed $22,000 over the posted range. Not for the Terraform. For being able to point at a line on a finance report and say that one was me.
Consequence is the other one, and it is harder to fake. Much harder. Have you carried a pager for something that mattered? Did you write the postmortem, or read one? Did anything change afterward because of what you wrote? Senior interviews are mostly this question in different costumes.
A short list of things that actually reprice a candidate in my experience, in rough order of how often they move the number:
- Ownership of a cloud bill above roughly $100,000 a month, with a documented reduction you drove.
- Incident command. Not “participated in incidents.” Ran one.
- A migration you led end to end, including the rollback plan nobody ended up needing.
- Security posture work, especially anything touching a SOC 2 or HITRUST audit. Regulated buyers pay a premium and there is no substitute for having sat through the audit.
- Having built the thing that let other engineers stop asking you for help. Self-service is the platform mindset and interviewers can hear it in about ninety seconds.
What a CKA Is Worth in an Offer Conversation
Certifications get oversold to candidates and undersold by engineers, which is a strange combination. Both camps are wrong.
Here is the honest version. A CKA or AWS Solutions Architect Associate gets you past an automated screen and past a recruiter who does not know the domain. That is real value if you are switching in from sysadmin or network work and your resume does not yet say the right words. It is close to zero value once you are already senior, because by then the interview is about what you have run, not what you have studied.
The exception is the Solutions Architect Professional and the CKS. Both are hard enough that people who hold them tend to have done the work anyway, so hiring managers read them as a proxy rather than a checkbox. Weak proxy. Still a proxy.
What I have never once seen move an offer is a certification in a tool the company does not use.
The Resumes That Stop Getting Callbacks Around Year Six
Three patterns, and I see all three every quarter.
The first is the tool collector. Twenty-two technologies listed, none of them attached to an outcome, and a work history that reads like a procurement log. Hiring managers assume shallow, because the resume gives them nothing else to assume. So they pass. The fix is not fewer tools. It is one sentence per role saying what you owned and what it cost the company when it broke.
Second is the internal lifer at a company that never got complicated. Eight years, same stack, forty engineers the whole time, and the blast radius never grew past a staging environment. This one is genuinely unfair. The person is usually excellent. The pattern is real all the same, and the way out is almost always a job change rather than a promotion, which is a frustrating thing to tell somebody who likes their team.

Third is what I think of as the accidental manager. Somebody who got handed two direct reports at year five, stopped touching production, and now interviews badly for senior IC roles because the last thing they built themselves was a Jenkins upgrade in 2023. If you are going to manage, manage on purpose and commit to it. Pick a lane. Half-managing for three years is the single most expensive career move I watch DevOps people make. By a distance.
Our own numbers say the same thing from the hiring side. We fill IT roles in 17 days on average. The searches that run long are, with dull regularity, the ones asking for senior blast radius at a mid-level number. The market prices scope. It has gotten quite good at it.
AI Changed the Bottom of This Job, Not the Top
The 2025 DORA report is worth sitting with if you are early on this path. It surveyed about 5,000 practitioners. Nine in ten use AI at work, better than 80% think it has made them faster, and 30% will tell you in the same breath that they do not trust what it produces, which is a combination that only makes sense once you have shipped something a model wrote and watched it fall over in a way nobody predicted. That contradiction is the job now. Up the stack.
Nobody is paying for a hand-written Helm chart anymore. A model produces one in nine seconds. Nine. Spotting that the chart it produced sets a memory limit that will get your pod OOM-killed under the traffic you actually see on Tuesdays, that is the skill, and it is worth more today than it was three years ago.
The same report found AI adoption pulling delivery throughput up and stability down in the same motion. More changes, shipped faster, breaking more often. Read that as a job posting. Somebody has to absorb the instability, and that somebody is standing on this career path.
The junior role that got squeezed is the ticket-closing one. Rotate access requests, restart the failed job, update the runbook. That work is largely automated now, which is why the first rung feels harder to grab than it did in 2019. The junior role that grew is the one attached to a senior engineer who lets you break things in a staging environment that resembles production. Those are worth taking at a discount. Genuinely.
What to Change Before Your Next Review
Concrete, in order, and none of this requires permission.
Find out what your infrastructure costs. Most engineers below staff level cannot answer that question about the systems they own, and the handful who can are taken more seriously almost immediately, by their own manager and by whoever runs the next search they apply to. Then pick one number and move it. Just one.
Get on the pager for something that matters, and if your team does not have one, ask why. Volunteer for the incident nobody wants to write up. Postmortems are the cheapest portfolio in this field. Almost nobody treats them that way.
Say out loud, to your manager, which of the three doors you want. Platform, reliability, or infrastructure. Pick one. Nobody is hiding the fork from you on purpose, and in my experience most managers simply have not been asked and have no clue the question was on your mind.
And if none of that is available where you are, the fastest scope increase in this field is still a company change into a larger blast radius. A contract engagement is a reasonable way to test that without betting your whole year on it, particularly if you want Kubernetes-at-scale experience your current employer cannot give you.
What DevOps Engineers Ask Me When the Offer Is Already on the Table
Is DevOps engineer a dying title or just a renamed one?
Renamed, mostly. The work is growing while the specific title flattens out, because companies increasingly post the same job as platform engineer, SRE, or cloud infrastructure engineer instead. Search all four titles or you will miss half the market.
Six years in and still DevOps Engineer II. What is holding it?
Almost always scope, not skill. If nothing you own has customer-visible consequences, there is no evidence for a senior title regardless of how good you are. Look at what you would page for at 3 a.m. If the answer is nothing, that is the gap, and adding another certification will not close it.
Can I clear $200,000 without taking a manager title?
Yes, on the staff and principal IC track, where base runs $175,000 to $220,000 and up before equity. It requires owning platform-level scope rather than team-level scope. The path is real but narrow, and it exists mostly at companies large enough to need a platform in the first place. A 60-person shop usually has no rung above senior, no matter how much the team likes you.
Which cloud should I go deep on if I am only picking one?
AWS still has the most open roles, and Azure is the better bet if you want to work in healthcare, finance, or anywhere with heavy Microsoft licensing already in place. Depth in one beats a shallow tour of three. I have never once had a client reject a strong AWS engineer because they had not used GCP.
Does on-call experience really count for that much in an interview?
It counts for more than any certification on your resume. On-call is the one line item proving somebody trusted you with live production, unsupervised. When a candidate walks me through an incident they commanded, what they got wrong, and what changed because of it, we are already past the screening. The rest of the loop is formality.
I came up through sysadmin work. Is that a handicap now?
No, and I would argue the opposite at senior level. Sysadmins understand Linux, networking, and failure modes in a way that people who started at the Kubernetes layer often do not. The gap is usually software practice, so close it with Git discipline, testing, and one real infrastructure-as-code project you can talk about in depth. Then apply to the SRE roles as well, because that background reads well there.
The Short Version
Pick the fork on purpose. Learn what your systems cost. Carry the pager for something that would embarrass the company if it went down, then write about what happened when it did. Every raise on this path traces back to one of those three things, and none of them are on a certification roadmap.
