Read that again, because the second sentence is where the hiring decision actually lives. A DevOps engineer automates a pipeline. A site reliability engineer defends an uptime target. A platform engineer treats infrastructure as a product and your own developers as the customers, which means they have to win adoption they cannot mandate. Different instinct. Different interview. Different person, most of the time.

Comp for this role is a mess in the public data, and the mess is instructive. Pull two salary sites and you will get numbers that look like they describe different jobs, because they do. One counts base only. Another folds in equity from AI labs and calls the blend an average.

Salary.com puts the national base average near $131,600, with most of the field between roughly $121,700 and $140,200. Glassdoor reports an average closer to $217,000, but that figure is total pay, stock and bonus folded in, weighted toward large tech employers where equity does most of the talking. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions. The best platform engineers are not applying to your job. They are employed, they are good, and two other companies are already in their inbox. That is the whole difficulty in one sentence.

Supply is the reason. Almost nobody graduates straight into platform engineering. The role assumes a few years of infrastructure work first, so the entire pool is DevOps engineers, SREs, and cloud people who grew into it, and there are not enough of them. The engineers publishing Backstage plugins, speaking at KubeCon, or arguing about golden paths in the CNCF and Platform Engineering Slack rooms are the ones you want, and they are almost never on the market. Third is direct outreach that proves you actually understand the work, because a form-letter recruiter note gets ignored by exactly the person you are trying to reach.

Honest bias check, since I have skin in this. A handful of tells separate the builders from the resume decorators. The first is who they talk about. A platform engineer who says the payments team refused to onboard until they fixed the local dev experience is describing the actual job, adoption and all. One who lists “managed Kubernetes clusters” is describing a chore. The second is a failure story, because everyone who has done this work for real carries one. Ask what they built that nobody adopted and what it taught them. The third is depth over surface area. One cloud understood cold, with a working platform on top, beats three clouds name-dropped. The only question that counts is what they built with it and whether anyone used the result.

Certifications are fine, and on a junior they are a real signal of drive. On a senior with a wall of badges and no adoption stories behind them, they read like studying instead of shipping. Reward the drive early. Do not mistake the badge for the outcome.

An Interview Loop That Tests the Actual Job

Stop running a backend coding gauntlet for an infrastructure role. A four-round algorithm marathon tells you nothing about whether this person can build a platform other engineers will choose to stand on. Test the real work instead. Four rounds, in this order.

  1. Scope conversation. Thirty minutes. Walk through a platform they built end to end, and push on the why behind the architecture calls. If they cannot defend the choices, or worse, cannot name a single tradeoff they regret, stop here.
  2. Design the paved road. Give them your real situation. Twenty product engineers, a slow provisioning process, a mountain of ops tickets. Ask them to whiteboard a self-service golden path, and watch whether they start with the developer experience or with the infrastructure. The good ones start with the human.
  3. Hands-on debug. Most teams cut this round. It is the most predictive one you have. Put a failing Terraform apply or a misbehaving cluster in front of them and study the approach, not the answer. Do they read before they act? Do they form a hypothesis or start flailing? That is the tape you want.
