Embedded Software Engineer Salary Guide 2026

Embedded software engineers earn $125,000 to $150,000 at mid-level and $155,000 to $205,000 at senior in 2026, base only. Published US averages for the title run from $91,755 to $174,754. That $83,000 gap between two averages is the reason bands get approved that nobody accepts. Four different jobs share this title, and the public data cannot tell them apart.

An infusion pump manufacturer in Irvine approved $160,000 last October. Generous, on paper. They had checked three sites, taken the middle, and added a little because the product is regulated.

Eleven weeks later the req was still open.

The resumes were not bad. They were excellent, actually, and almost all of them belonged to bare-metal firmware engineers who had spent six years living inside STM32 reference manuals and vendor HAL code. The job needed someone to own a Yocto build on an i.MX 8M, kernel config through device tree through the signed update image, on a device that goes into a hospital and cannot be bricked by a power cut mid-flash. Two different careers. Same three words at the top of the resume.

They did not raise the band. They rewrote nine lines of the posting, named the SoC and the build system, and closed at $168,000 six weeks after that.

You should know where I sit before you weigh any of this. Read it that way. Every number below is linked and you can check all of them in about ten minutes.

Four Jobs, One Title, and a Ranking That Flips

Look at the two ZipRecruiter rows. Same site, same methodology, same month, and the narrower title pays $14,055 more than the broader one. Firmware engineer is supposed to be the subset. It prices higher. By a lot.

Now put the embedded Linux row next to it. That is the tier our clients pay the biggest premium for once they understand what they are buying, and on postings data it sits $32,560 below firmware. Backwards. Reliably backwards.

The ranking flips depending on which title you type into the box. Difficulty does not explain it. Scarcity does not either, and averaging the eight of them gives you $142,567, a number that describes no job anybody in this country actually holds. What the table is really showing is that the aggregators are all sampling the same undifferentiated pile of postings, and the pile contains four jobs.

The Glassdoor row is the one worth sitting with. Their base band alone, $112,000 to $162,000, swallows almost every average in the table. Fifty grand wide. When one title’s base range runs that far, the title is not the unit of measurement. Something underneath it is.

The Ladder Our Desk Actually Uses

Four runtimes. Four hiring markets. We publish these bands on the embedded software engineer job description template as scoping guidance, and they are worth repeating here because pricing is where they matter most.

Bottom band to top band, the floor moves $25,000 and the ceiling moves $30,000.

Sit with that, because it is the whole problem. An engineer who has spent nine years inside BitBake recipes, kernel configs, and device trees cannot do the bare-metal job, and the bare-metal engineer cannot do hers. Not adjacent skills. Not close. Neither one can walk into a DO-178C shop and produce a verification evidence package, and none of them could be trained into the others inside a year. Four populations that do not substitute for each other, priced inside a range narrow enough that one decent counteroffer erases it.

Compressed pricing is what makes this hire feel harder than it is. Post the blended number and you are competitive with every tier and specific to none, so the funnel fills with whichever population happens to be largest and looking hardest. Usually bare-metal. Deepest pool in the market, and the one most likely to answer a generic embedded req.

The Irvine client did not have a money problem. They had a targeting problem, and the eight-thousand-dollar bump at the end was a rounding error next to eleven weeks of a program schedule.

None of this holds for the tier above. An embedded systems engineer owning the device end to end, hardware integration and all, prices on a genuinely different curve, and we break that market out separately because the employer mix behind it is not the same one behind this table.

What the Blended Number Never Prices

Three line items sit outside the bands entirely. Every one of them shows up as a premium on top, and every one of them is a thing the person owns rather than a thing they know.

Owning the Build Instead of Consuming It

There is a large difference between an engineer who writes application code against a vendor BSP and an engineer who maintains the layer that produces it. The first one files a ticket when the image will not boot. The second one is the ticket.

That second engineer is scarce for a boring reason. Most companies license a BSP from the silicon vendor or a module supplier and never build the capability in house, so the population that has maintained a custom Yocto layer through three kernel uprevs is small and mostly employed. Expect $15,000 to $25,000 over the tier band. And move fast.

The Update Path

Somebody owns secure boot, signed images, A and B partitions, and rollback when a unit loses power at the worst possible moment. On most teams that somebody does not exist. Survivable, until recently.

The EU Cyber Resilience Act reporting obligations start applying on 11 September 2026, with a 24-hour early warning window for actively exploited vulnerabilities, and medical device manufacturers have been living with software bill of materials requirements since 2023. An engineer who has shipped an OTA system that rolled back cleanly under real field conditions, and who can produce an SBOM from a build rather than from a spreadsheet, is worth $10,000 to $20,000 more than an equally senior engineer who has not.

In 2024 I would not have asked. On a connected-device search it is now the first question, ahead of the silicon, ahead of the RTOS, ahead of anything else on the page.

The Test Rig

Hardware-in-the-loop is the least glamorous premium in embedded and possibly the most valuable. An engineer who has built a HIL rig, wired the fixtures, automated the flash-and-verify cycle, and gotten it running in CI has removed the single biggest tax on your release cadence.

Almost nobody screens for it. Fewer pay for it. The teams that do are usually the ones who already lost a quarter watching releases slip because every regression test was a person with a J-Link and a checklist.

Level Bands, and What We Actually Close At

Public averages describe a population. These describe signed offers.

Read the last row carefully. The Glassdoor figure is total pay and the KORE1 figure is base, and if you are a privately held device manufacturer with no liquid equity instrument to offer, the right column is the entire offer you can make. Comparing it against the left column will talk you out of a competitive req.

Contract work runs on separate arithmetic. Mid-level W-2 rates land near $70 to $100 an hour and senior bare-metal or certified work runs $100 to $140, before any agency burden or margin, which is why the number on a purchase order surprises people who benchmarked against pay rate. Different question entirely. When the work has a defined end, a bring-up crunch or a recertification, contract staffing is usually the cheaper answer.

Three Things Candidates Think Are Worth Money

They are not. Being straight about it saves an awkward negotiation later.

Breadth of silicon. A resume listing STM32, PIC32, nRF52, Kinetis, and MSP430 reads as impressive and prices as neutral. What the market pays for is depth in one family, plus evidence the person can read a reference manual cold, which is a different signal entirely and shows up in how somebody describes one hard bug rather than in a list of parts. Lists are cheap.

Vendor certifications. Nobody has ever paid a dollar more for one in a search I have run.

Language count. C, C++, Python, some Rust, a little assembly. Table stakes. The premium sits on what the code shipped inside and whether the person owned that layer, not on how many syntaxes they can compile. Reqs Where Another Ten Thousand Would Not Have Helped

Against my own interest, which is the only section here worth much.

The on-site one. You cannot put a logic analyzer on a prototype over a video call, and the prototype lives in a building with a badge reader. If the req says five days on site and the band says market average, the band is not what is failing. Two or three days is what most senior embedded people will take. Five costs you about what a $15,000 raise buys, in candidate terms, and you do not get the $15,000 back.

The unnamed-layer one. A posting that says “embedded software engineer, C/C++, RTOS experience, Linux a plus” describes three of the four rows above and commits to none of them. Everybody reads it. Everybody assumes it was written for somebody else.

The eight-year filter. Requiring eight years when the work is a well-scoped RTOS application layer cuts your pool by more than half and buys almost nothing measurable. We track 12-month retention at 92% across placements, and the searches that hit it are almost always the ones where the requirement list matched the actual job instead of the ideal one.

Before You Take the Band to Finance

What number goes in the req if I only get one?

$140,000 to $175,000 base covers a mid-to-senior embedded software engineer in most US metros in 2026. Add $15,000 to $25,000 if the person will own the build system or the update path.

One caveat on that range. It assumes you have decided which runtime you are hiring for, because a single number aimed at all four tiers is what produced the eleven-week search at the top of this page. Decide the layer. Then price it.

Why does firmware engineer pay more than embedded software engineer on the same site?

Title sampling, not skill. ZipRecruiter’s firmware engineer postings skew toward silicon and hardware employers who pay above market, while the broader embedded software engineer query sweeps in industrial and defense postings at lower bands.

Do not restructure a job around it. The practical takeaway is narrower and more useful. The title you post changes who applies far more than it changes what you pay, and “firmware engineer” pulls a measurably different pool than “embedded software engineer” even when the work is identical.

Our finalist has an offer $30,000 above our band. Match it?

Find out what the other offer is made of first. If $30,000 of it is unvested equity in a private company, you are competing against a number that may never become money.

Candidates know that better than they did in 2021. If it is cash, the honest answer depends on the tier. On bare-metal, walking is defensible, because the pool is deep and another strong candidate exists. On embedded Linux with a certified product, walking usually costs more than matching. Does remote work cut the band?

Remote moves this band up more often than down. Fully remote embedded roles exist, they skew senior and architectural, and they compete against a national pool instead of a local one.

Anything touching a bench is a different conversation. Hardware access is a term of employment in this discipline in a way it is not for backend work, and pretending otherwise in a posting produces candidates who withdraw in week three.

We are a startup. Can we win on equity?

Sometimes, and it has gotten harder. Embedded engineers have usually watched a hardware startup miss a manufacturing milestone, so equity carries a discount here that it does not carry in web-facing engineering.

Lead with the product, the silicon, and who they will sit next to. Then be specific about the grant instead of waving at it. Strike price, share count, where the preference stack sits today. Vague grants read as a warning.

How long should a properly priced search take?

Six to ten weeks from open req to signed offer for a senior embedded software engineer with a named layer and a realistic on-site expectation. Certified and cleared work runs longer on paperwork rather than on sourcing.

Past week twelve with nobody at final stage, stop adjusting the number. The failure is nearly always the posting, the on-site requirement, or a loop that takes nine days to schedule a second round. We work these searches across 30-plus US metros and the pattern holds almost everywhere.

Should I hire two mid-level engineers instead of one senior?

Usually not, in embedded specifically, and I say that knowing two placements bill better than one. The work carries long serial dependencies that do not split cleanly across people.

A board gets brought up once. A bootloader gets written once. A certification package has one real owner whether or not the org chart agrees. Two engineers at $135,000 do not replace one at $190,000 when most of the critical path runs through a single pair of hands. Where the split does work is a senior owning the platform and a mid-level owning application and test. Good structure. We staff it often.

Price the Layer, Not the Title

The question is not what an embedded software engineer costs in 2026. That question has eight published answers spanning $83,000 and every one of them is defensible.

The question is which of the four runtimes you are actually buying, and whether the posting says so clearly enough that the other three populations stop applying. Get that right and the band mostly writes itself, somewhere between $140,000 and $205,000 depending on the layer and the seniority, with a premium on top for the build, the update path, or the rig.

Get it wrong and you will read forty strong resumes, reject every one of them for reasons you struggle to put into words, and conclude that the talent is not out there.

It is out there. Four piles. You have been fishing in the largest one.
