KORE1’s engineering staffing in Milwaukee places mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, quality and controls engineers and the technicians on their teams, with automation makers, heavy equipment plants, utilities and medical imaging campuses across the four-county metro.

Few metros this size hold so many engineers. The Milwaukee-Waukesha area counted 15,730 architecture and engineering jobs in May 2025, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage survey. That works out to a location quotient of 1.14. Industrial engineers run at 2.04, twice the national share. So the people are here. Pay is the odd part.

Milwaukee engineering jobs pay 12.7% under the U.S. mean. Chicago pays the same jobs more, and it’s 90 miles down I-94.

Across all occupations, Milwaukee pay trails the nation by just 3.3%. Engineering trails by nearly four times that. Not a small difference. Price from a national salary survey and the offer looks generous here. An offer priced off a local one looks thin to any mechanical or electrical engineer who has checked what Chicago, Madison or a remote employer will pay for the same work, and plenty of them have. Chicago is close.

Software and infrastructure seats go to our Milwaukee IT staffing desk, and office, finance and warehouse hiring runs through the Milwaukee staffing agency team. The plant floor is ours, and our engineering recruiters work it every day. KORE1 opened in 2005, and plant hiring has been part of our engineering staffing agency work from the start.

Milwaukee Still Builds Heavy Things and Hires Engineers to Match

Walk the Harbor District and you’ll pass Komatsu Mining’s $285 million campus, opened in 2022 to build the giant shovels and haul gear that mines run around the clock. Regal Rexnord, the gearbox, bearing and motor company, keeps its headquarters in town under a new CEO as of July. A. O. Smith still designs water heaters and boilers here. Harley-Davidson builds engines at its powertrain plant in Menomonee Falls. All of it needs engineers.

Growth is coming from tools and power, too. Milwaukee Tool is adding a $42 million, 300-job site in Menomonee Falls, its fourth there, and its Wisconsin workforce, about 900 people a decade ago, now runs past 4,000. Generac is turning a former printing plant in Sussex into a line for data center standby generators, set to open late this year.

  • Manufacturing engineers who’ve moved a line from one product to the next without losing a shift, and can show the scrap numbers from before and after
  • Gear and shovel work fails in the field. Not on paper. Our quality engineers have traced root cause on returned parts and closed out the corrective action while the customer watched
  • Ask what a candidate last released to the floor. Design engineers worth hiring here have taken a casting or weldment from model to production drawing and fielded the shop’s questions after
  • Milwaukee employs 3,940 industrial engineers, more than any other engineering job in the metro, and they’re the ones Chicago pays only 4% more for
  • Most mechanical engineers here work in product or plant engineering, about 2,200 of them, averaging $98,290 against $113,610 nationally

Technicians fill out most teams. Price them locally. The metro’s 730 industrial engineering technicians run at a location quotient of 1.83 and average $65,600, so an hourly offer built from Chicago data will overshoot, and one built from a national survey still lands close.

Rockwell’s Hometown Pays Electrical Engineers 16.5% Under the U.S.

$104,470. That’s the average Milwaukee electrical engineer’s pay, against $125,100 nationally and $118,210 in metro Chicago. Odd numbers for the city where the Allen-Bradley clock tower sits on top of Rockwell Automation’s headquarters in Walker’s Point. Deep supply explains part of it.

Demand isn’t slowing, either. Rockwell has a $2 billion U.S. investment plan, and its new plant in New Berlin, 810,000 square feet to start, is still working through city approvals with construction expected in 2027. ABB already runs its U.S. drives and motion headquarters out of New Berlin. Then there’s power. WEC Energy Group’s capital plan for 2026 through 2030 now stands at $37.5 billion, including 1,100 megawatts of gas turbines at Oak Creek and the power for Vantage’s data center campus in Port Washington.

Pick the model first. An Oak Creek outage window or a line launch with a fixed end date fits project staffing. So does one contract engineer brought in for the term. Permanent seats with some patience on the start date run best as direct hire, and contract-to-hire covers the job nobody has fully defined yet.

Milwaukee vs. Chicago Pay

Which Milwaukee Engineers Chicago Can Outbid

Plant floors everywhere run Allen-Bradley controllers from a Milwaukee company, most of them programmed in ladder logic, so here’s the market drawn as one. Each rung is a job. Power runs from the left rail through two contacts in series, and the coil on the right switches on only when both are true. Contact one asks whether Milwaukee holds at least its national share of the job. Contact two asks whether Chicago’s average pay runs 10% or more above Milwaukee’s, roughly where a passive engineer starts returning a recruiter’s call.

Reading the ladder
  • A contact passes power when its condition is true. True contacts are lit
  • The coil turns on only if every contact to its left is true
  • Lit wire shows how far power gets along the rung

Four rungs light up. The two that don’t are the ones Milwaukee hires most, industrial and civil engineers, where Chicago’s premium stays under 10%. Those seats are safer. Mechanical and electrical engineers are deep here and still cost $11,000 to $14,000 more an hour and a half south, which is exactly the gap a Chicago or remote recruiter opens a call with.

Every figure is a May 2025 annual mean wage or location quotient from the federal Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program, comparing the Milwaukee-Waukesha, WI metro with Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN. Electrical and electronic technicians are one BLS category. Engineering managers are the BLS architectural and engineering managers group. Means blend every level of experience, so treat each rung as a signal about where to set a budget, not as an offer.

Coverage

Where Milwaukee Engineering Work Sits, From the Harbor to Port Washington

The federal metro covers Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties. Racine County sits outside it, Microsoft’s new Mount Pleasant data center included, though plenty of the engineers who work there commute from inside the line, as do many who work for southeast Wisconsin employers like Kohler and Modine outside the four counties. Pay law is simple here. Wisconsin has no pay-range posting law, and its 2017 Act 327 blocks cities and counties from passing their own salary-history bans. Illinois is different.

FAQ

Common Questions About Milwaukee Engineering Searches

What should a Milwaukee engineering budget look like?

Milwaukee mechanical engineers averaged $98,290 in May 2025 and electrical engineers $104,470, both well under national pay, but budgeting at those figures tends to lose finalists to Chicago. Split the difference. Set the range between the Milwaukee and Chicago means for those two jobs. Industrial engineers are the exception, since the two cities sit only 4% apart. The mechanical engineer salary guide shows national pay by level.

Will a Chicago employer outbid us for a Milwaukee engineer?

For mechanical and electrical engineers, often yes. Chicago’s averages run 11.5% and 13.2% higher, and seven Hiawatha round trips a day make a hybrid schedule workable for someone who lives in Bay View or Wauwatosa and only has to be in a Chicago office two or three days a week. Madison pays a little over 5% more for both jobs. Our counter usually isn’t more salary. It’s speed. An offer that reaches the candidate first, and a hiring manager who calls back the same day, beats a few thousand dollars more often than you’d think.

How fast can a Milwaukee engineering search close?

Most of our Milwaukee searches take three to six weeks, intake to accepted offer. Industrial and manufacturing roles land near the short end, because the bench here is deep. Electrical runs longer. Controls and power systems searches do too, since by the final round the best candidates often hold a Chicago offer or a counteroffer already.

Does a Wisconsin engineering job posting need a pay range?

No, because Wisconsin has no pay-range posting law, and a bill that would add one, AB 480, hasn’t moved past committee. Employers may also ask about salary history. A remote or hybrid seat reporting into Illinois is a different matter, though, because Illinois expects a range on postings for work tied to the state. Check the reporting line.

Can a Milwaukee engineer’s non-compete stop the hire?

Sometimes, though less often than people fear. Under Wisconsin Statute 103.465, a restrictive covenant has to be reasonably necessary to protect the employer, and one unreasonable term voids the whole thing. Courts here won’t rewrite it. Have your counsel read the agreement before the offer goes out.

Which engineering jobs does KORE1 fill around Milwaukee?

Mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, quality and controls engineers make up most of our Milwaukee searches, along with industrial, power systems and civil engineers and their technicians. Levels run from second-job engineers to engineering managers, the group Chicago outbids by the widest dollar margin, $16,780 a year. Plant shutdowns and launch crunches get temporary engineering staff who leave when the work does.

What does a Milwaukee engineering placement cost?

It depends on the model. A contract engineer bills at one hourly rate that already covers wages, employer taxes, insurance and KORE1’s margin, with nothing tacked on later. A direct hire costs a single fee, paid once the engineer starts, and comes with a replacement guarantee, so if the engineer leaves inside that window we run the search again without a second fee. Thinking you might convert a contractor later? We write those terms in at the start. Ask us for both quotes.
