NetSuite Staffing in Indianapolis for Freight That Belongs in Item Cost

Central Indiana distributors pay to move product before they sell it. Our recruiters place NetSuite people who get that freight onto the right item, split the right way.

Most Indianapolis NetSuite Accounts Pay to Move Product Before They Sell It

Indiana’s state motto, adopted in 1937, is The Crossroads of America, and the NetSuite accounts our recruiters open around I-465 read like it. FedEx runs its second-largest cargo hub at the airport. Plainfield alone counts 50 million square feet of industrial warehouse space along I-70. So most of the companies that call us buy product somewhere else, truck it in, hold it for a while and sell it on.

Every load shows up with a freight bill. Somebody has to decide where it goes.

The metro had 1,182,100 nonfarm jobs on the preliminary August 2026 count, roughly 12,600 below a year before, with 86,100 of them in transportation, warehousing and utilities. A softer year. Margins get read more closely in one. The May 2025 Indianapolis wage survey put the mean for computer and math work at $47.16 an hour, about 18 percent under the national figure, which is part of why Indiana NetSuite searches price where they do.

Searches from Lebanon down to Franklin run through our NetSuite consultant staffing practice, one desk within KORE1’s IT staffing services, and the recruiters on our Indianapolis staffing agency team pass along the NetSuite briefs they pick up. On intake calls here the line we hear most is “our item margins don’t tie to the P&L.” Usually it’s the freight. It got paid. It just never reached the item.

An Indianapolis Freight Bill Covers the Trailer, Not the Item

NetSuite has a place for that cost. With Landed Cost switched on, a carrier’s bill can be sourced onto the item receipt from its Landed Cost subtab, and the amount moves into inventory instead of an expense line. Each landed cost category gets its own holding account, which Oracle says is usually not a cost of goods sold account.

Then comes one dropdown. The Cost Allocation Method field offers Weight, Quantity or Value, and Oracle’s help page is blunt about the rest. “A transaction can only allocate with one method at a time.”

So one choice, often made at go-live by someone long gone from the company, decides how a $7,800 bill gets shared between a pallet of cast iron and a pallet of knives.

Setting that rule on purpose is NetSuite implementation consultant work. Keeping it working falls to the NetSuite administrator, because a Weight allocation stops cold on any item with no weight entered. NetSuite just shows an error.

The Load

One Trailer, One Freight Bill, Four Answers

This is one inbound load seen from above, nose on the left and doors on the right, every pallet in its spot. Under it the same $7,800 freight bill is laid out the length of the trailer and cut once for each way it can be booked.

The products, weights and prices are invented. Skillets at 6 pounds and $7 a unit before freight, knife sets at 2 pounds and $30, bowl sets at 4 pounds and $11. Swap in your own numbers. The pattern survives.

  • S, cast-iron skillets. 12 pallets, 2,400 units, 14,400 lb, $16,800 of product.
  • B, mixing bowl sets. 6 pallets, 1,440 units, 5,760 lb, $15,840 of product.
  • K, knife sets. 8 pallets, 2,240 units, 4,480 lb, $67,200 of product.

Now multiply it. Forty containers a year with the skillets booked by value instead of weight, and $3,246 of freight per load moves off them and onto the knives. The product that looks like your best margin may be the one quietly paying for the trucks. If what’s really missing is an inventory costing policy rather than a NetSuite setting, start with our accounting and finance recruiters instead.

The Second Rule

Freight Follows Weight. Duty Follows Value.

Accounting settled long ago whether freight belongs in inventory. The codification defines inventory cost as what it takes to bring an article “to its existing condition and location,” and the KPMG inventory handbook lists inbound shipping and handling among those costs under ASC 330-10-30-1. Abnormal freight is the exception, and that gets expensed.

What GAAP leaves open is the split. A truck is priced on pounds and on how much of the trailer a load fills, so freight usually follows weight. Duty and cargo insurance are figured on declared value, so they follow value. Two bases, one container, and a transaction-level setting that only takes one of them.

Oracle’s way around it is the Landed Cost Allocation per Line preference, which lets each receipt line carry its own landed cost amounts rather than one method for the whole transaction. Somebody still has to work those amounts out. On busy receiving docks that usually means a SuiteScript developer writing the split into the receipt, and where the floor runs a warehouse system, a NetSuite WMS integration consultant to keep its receipts and NetSuite’s agreeing. Two skills, seldom one person.

Where We Recruit

Indianapolis NetSuite Staffing Follows the Interstates Out of I-465

I-65, I-69, I-70 and I-74 all meet the I-465 loop, and most of our Central Indiana NetSuite briefs sit a few exits from one of them. The accounts read differently depending on which.

Downtown & the Mile Square

Corporate finance teams and the back offices of health, insurance and holding companies. Briefs ask about intercompany eliminations and, more often than you’d guess, a company’s very first in-house NetSuite owner.

Carmel, Fishers & Noblesville

Software companies and consumer brands with finance in Hamilton County and product in someone else’s building. Item records, 3PL feeds and the CRM sync lead most briefs.

Plainfield, Avon & the Airport

Warehouses along I-70 and around the FedEx hub. Receiving, bins, landed cost and the handoff to a warehouse system, and the freight bill question gets asked by name.

Whitestown, Greenwood & the I-65 Line

Distribution centers at both ends of I-65 through the metro, including the $80 million Amazon site in Greenwood. Assemblies, work orders and lot tracking show up next to the freight.

One thing we check early is where a candidate actually lives relative to the loop. A Fishers resident who says yes to a Plainfield warehouse office is signing up for I-465 twice a day, and in our experience that offer gets accepted in October and regretted by February.

One Interview Question

The Freight Bill Arrived After the Skillets Shipped. Now What?

We put some version of that to most Indianapolis NetSuite candidates, a container that lands March 3 and a carrier bill that only shows up April 9, after a third of the skillets have already gone out. Weak answers post it to freight expense and move on. Wrong account.

Better ones source the bill back onto the original receipt, or onto the inventory receipt if Advanced Receiving is on, and then ask what costing method the account runs. Average cost and FIFO land differently here, and Oracle notes that costing values get recalculated whenever an item’s costing history changes. The strongest also ask whether March is already closed, and who signed it off.

Then we move the facts. Duty on the same container should go by value and the freight by weight, and the controller wants both on one receipt by Friday.

Few people answer that cleanly on the first try. Our NetSuite recruiters keep a list of the ones who do.

The Seats

Four Seats, Four Places a Freight Dollar Gets Lost

Each card stamps the moments this seat is actually paid for.

NetSuite Administrator

Keeps weights, landed cost flags and categories right on every item, so a Weight allocation never stops on an error.

SuiteScript & SuiteFlow Developer

Writes the per-line split and the workflow that routes every carrier bill to the receipt it paid for.

Functional & Implementation Consultant

Writes the allocation policy, the holding accounts and the close step an auditor will want walked through.

Solution Architect

Picks the costing method and designs how receiving, landed cost and the warehouse system fit before go-live.

Features and modules we staff for
  • Landed Cost
  • Landed Cost Allocation per Line
  • Advanced Receiving
  • Multi-Location Inventory
  • Lot & serial tracking
  • NetSuite WMS
  • Demand Planning
  • NetSuite OneWorld
  • SuiteAnalytics Workbook

Landed Cost is on that list, and switching it on changes nothing until someone checks Track Landed Cost on the items themselves. That box needs an owner.

Engagement Models

Fixing One Receipt Is a Ticket. Fixing How Every Load Gets Costed Is a Project.

One receipt is an afternoon. Changing how receiving and payables hand a freight bill to each other takes weeks, and someone has to stay until the new routine sticks.

Most Requested

Contract & Contract-to-Hire

KORE1 handles payroll, you direct the work, and most of these run three to six months. Re-sourcing old freight bills onto the receipts they paid for is typical contract work, and so is the inventory cleanup before an audit or a lender’s field exam. Plenty convert to permanent once the cleanup turns into ongoing ownership.

Direct Hire

Go this route for the person who’ll own item records through the next supplier, the next warehouse and whatever gets acquired after that. Judgment calls all day. That’s a seat to keep in-house.

Common Questions

What do NetSuite consultants charge in Indianapolis?

Indianapolis contract bill rates in 2026 run about $58 to $86 an hour for NetSuite administrators, $72 to $119 for SuiteScript developers, $82 to $135 for functional and implementation consultants and $112 to $175 for solution architects.

Those figures are what a client pays per hour, not what the consultant takes home, and take-home pay is in the NetSuite consultant salary guide, with developers covered separately in our SuiteScript developer pay guide. Indianapolis runs cheaper than Chicago and both coasts, in line with the federal wage data above. Someone who has actually run landed cost and inventory costing on a live distribution account prices at the top of each range. Fully loaded cost by engagement type is laid out in our breakdown of NetSuite consultant cost.

How long does an Indianapolis NetSuite search take?

On average, 17 days pass between the intake call and the first candidate you’d want to interview, and administrator and inventory searches here track near that.

Architect searches run longer. Same for a brief wanting landed cost, warehouse integration and SuiteScript all in one hire. Choose two of the three.

Which landed cost allocation methods does NetSuite offer?

NetSuite offers Weight, Quantity and Value in a single Cost Allocation Method field, and Oracle’s documentation says a transaction can only allocate with one method at a time.

Freight on the truck and duty on the customs entry often need different bases. Oracle’s answer is the Landed Cost Allocation per Line preference, on the Order Management subtab of Accounting Preferences, and once it’s checked every new item receipt, vendor bill, check and credit card charge defaults to per-line amounts.

Should freight be allocated by weight or by value?

Freight by weight, almost always, since carriers price a load on pounds and trailer space, while duty and cargo insurance go by value because customs and underwriters work from declared value.

Either way the cost belongs in inventory. ASC 330-10-30-1 counts inbound delivery as part of what an item cost, so a carrier bill coded to expense flatters margin on that truck’s products until they sell through. Cast iron, tile, fertilizer and anything bottled feel it first. In the trailer drawn above, skillets pick up 3.5 times more freight by weight than by value.

Why won’t landed cost allocate on our receipts?

Most of the time it’s the item record, where Track Landed Cost was never checked or the weight field sits empty on a receipt set to allocate by Weight.

Two rarer causes. A sourced vendor bill needs at least one line with an item that tracks landed cost, and on accounts running Advanced Receiving the allocation has to sit on the inventory receipt instead of the bill. A part-time NetSuite administrator usually clears that kind of backlog in about a week.

Which NetSuite hire should an Indianapolis distributor make first?

Bring in a functional consultant first if nobody has put in writing how freight, duty and handling get costed, then add an administrator to keep the item records honest.

Add a developer when the dock takes 30 or 40 loads a week and nobody can split them by hand anymore. Re-costing loads that already sold is a separate line item. Budget it high.

Do you cover Carmel, Fishers, Plainfield and Greenwood?

Yes, KORE1 recruits in all four, plus Indianapolis itself, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville, Whitestown, Lebanon, Avon, Brownsburg and Franklin.

Thin bench for one module, say NetSuite WMS? Remote covers most of that fine. Tell us up front.

Pick your heaviest SKU. Does its cost include the truck?

Not sure? That’s usually the answer. Walk us through how one carrier bill gets entered today and we’ll point to the NetSuite hire that fixes it, typically with a first interview about 17 days later.
