IT contractor rates in Salt Lake City run $42 to $53 an hour for a Level 2 help desk technician (median $47) and $92 to $116 for a mid software engineer (median $103), per KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: October 27, 2026

In budget terms, as of October 16, 2026, that Level 2 help desk seat comes to about $24,400 for three months. The mid software engineer comes to about $53,600. Both are full bill rates. Wages, payroll taxes and the employer costs a staffing firm carries are already inside them, so nothing gets added later.

Salt Lake City runs a touch under the national benchmark across almost every line on this page. Not over it. No surprise premium. KORE1 has recruited technology talent since 2005, and these rates sit beside our IT staffing in Salt Lake City work, our ERP staffing in Salt Lake City bench and the data staffing team, all priced on the same contract staffing terms that run through every IT staffing engagement we quote.

One thing to know first. Every Salt Lake City row on this page is modeled. Not observed. Not yet. We say why further down.

The input list

What Does a Contract IT Worker Cost per Hour in Salt Lake City in 2026?

Twelve lines, two contract sizes. The range on each line is the 25th to 75th percentile, where the middle half of Salt Lake City bills fall. A 13-week contract is 520 hours at 40 a week, and 26 weeks is 1,040. There is no network engineer line for this metro — a security analyst/engineer seat is substituted. More on that in the method section.

Modeled means built from BLS OEWS May 2025 wages for the Salt Lake City-Murray metro, plus a 24% employer burden and the bill bands KORE1 sees on its own placements. No Salt Lake City role has five KORE1 placements behind it yet, so no line reads observed.

Index version 2026-Q4, effective October 16, 2026. Next refresh January 2027. Totals assume 40 hours a week at the median. 1The Salt Lake City-Murray MSA has no published network engineer wage line, so a security analyst/engineer seat stands in.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Salt Lake City?

Twice as much. Almost to the dollar. No discount for term length. The hourly rate doesn’t drop for a longer term, so the second 13 weeks cost what the first did.

At the Salt Lake City median, a mid-level software engineer comes to about $53,600 for a quarter and $107,100 for two. A senior engineer runs $65,500 and then $131,000. On the support side, Level 2 help desk is $24,400 and $48,800.

Here’s the Salt Lake City pattern. No spikes. Almost every role bills a few dollars under the national median, and several families bunch tight together. A mid ERP consultant and a mid business systems analyst both bill an $80 median, and a mid IT project manager sits two dollars under them at $78. Put a mid ERP consultant, a mid security analyst and a Level 2 help desk tech on one 13-week refresh and the three seats total about $111,800, or $223,600 if the work runs 26 weeks. A whole dev team priced the same way is in contract development team cost.

At 26 weeks the contractor also passes 1,040 hours, the point where a KORE1 contractor can move onto your payroll with no conversion fee. Pick the longer size. The decision lands on the calendar by itself. Monthly math for more roles is in the staff augmentation cost breakdown, and the conversion route is under contract-to-hire staffing.

Start and length

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Salt Lake City, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Five dates matter on a Salt Lake City contract, from the first shift to the day conversion turns free, and they come from KORE1 placement records across every metro we staff, not from Salt Lake City alone.

  1. Day 3Median first shift after a signed offer, across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts
  2. Week 13520 hours, the 3-month line on the list
  3. Day 116Median KORE1 assignment, from 1,887 that ended
  4. Day 136Median IT assignment, 410 of those 1,887
  5. Week 261,040 hours, when conversion carries no fee
Drawn to scale across 26 weeks from wide screens up. The shaded stretch runs from the median assignment to the median IT assignment, and the orange mark is the 1,040-hour conversion point.

Look where the medians land, because both sit past week 13 and the IT figure is closer to week 20, so a Salt Lake City team that budgets one quarter for an IT contractor will usually be back for a second quote. Plan for it. Budget for two quotes, not one.

The front end is short. Three days from signed offer to first shift means a 13-week budget buys close to 13 weeks of actual work, not ten, and the data behind that is in how fast a contractor can start.

What Is Inside a Salt Lake City Bill Rate?

Devin Hornick, a partner at KORE1, opens with the words people get wrong. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.” He’s right. Every time.

His worked example makes it concrete. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.” Every KORE1 bill-rate example uses that 24% employer burden, so $100 an hour in pay is $124 loaded before any staffing-firm margin. The index applies the same flat 24% to Salt Lake City, because state costs move around and one number keeps every metro comparable. A quoted markup frequently leaves the burden out. Ask what the quoted number covers.

In Utah, these are the costs that live inside the burden. None of them gets its own line on an invoice.

  • Federal payroll tax

Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45%, per IRS Publication 15. FUTA is 6.0% of the first $7,000, or a net 0.6% after the state credit (IRS Topic 759).

  • State unemployment insurance

Utah sets a new-employer unemployment insurance rate each year through the Department of Workforce Services, applied to a state wage base that moves annually. It’s a smaller line than the federal pieces, and the index still carries the same flat 24% in every metro no matter what a given state charges a new employer that year.

  • Workers’ compensation is mandatory

Unlike Texas, Utah requires workers’ compensation coverage for employers with any employees, with narrow exceptions. KORE1 carries it for every Salt Lake City contractor regardless, the same as in every metro we staff.

  • State income tax withholding

Utah runs a flat state income tax, which is withheld from the contractor’s pay, not added to the employer’s burden. It changes what a contractor takes home. It doesn’t change the bill rate.

On top of the required list, KORE1 pays dental and vision in full for its contractors. Compare vendors on what’s inside the rate, not the headline. The contractor burden rate page takes the 24% apart line by line.

Salt Lake City doesn’t carry a premium anywhere on this table. No discount cluster either. Every line sits 3% to 5% under the national median, and the gap holds steady across support, infrastructure, engineering and finance roles alike. Nothing here spikes or dips the way a single-metro quirk usually would.

The premium story lives on the coasts. A mid software engineer bills $103 in Salt Lake City and $143 in the Bay Area, a gap of $40 an hour, or about $20,800 over a 13-week contract. Seattle sits at $128, San Diego at $126 and Los Angeles at $124. Every metro side by side is in our IT contractor rates by city comparison, and the markets with real premiums are IT contractor rates in the Bay Area, IT contractor rates in Seattle and IT contractor rates in San Diego. The nearest discount peers run close: Phoenix bills a $105 mid software engineer and Denver $109, per IT contractor rates in Phoenix and IT contractor rates in Denver, while Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth both land at $106, per IT contractor rates in Austin and IT contractor rates in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Why Every Salt Lake City Rate on the List Is Modeled

We’d rather say it. Hiding it helps nobody. Most KORE1 placements are in Southern California. Not Utah. No Salt Lake City role has the five placements the index needs before it will print an observed number. So each Salt Lake City line is a model, labeled as one.

Not a guess, though. Federal wage surveys for the metro supply the starting point, the same 24% burden sits on top, and our own billing history sets the spread, so you can check every step yourself against the public BLS tables we link in the method section. Think of each line as the spot Salt Lake City quotes tend to crowd around. Yours will land near it.

So what moves a real quote? Mostly four things. Not magic. How many days the person must sit in a downtown or Silicon Slopes office. Whether the req calls for something thin on the ground, like a specific NetSuite module, an embedded stack or a security clearance. How soon the start date is. And whether the title says senior while the budget says mid, a mismatch we flag before any number goes out. NetSuite seats come through NetSuite staffing in Salt Lake City, ERP work through ERP staffing in Salt Lake City and engineers through engineering staffing in Salt Lake City. National pricing for neighboring roles is in project manager contract rates, business analyst contract bill rates, cloud engineer contract bill rates and network engineer contract bill rates.

Where These Salt Lake City Contract Rates Apply

BLS measures one wage area across the whole Salt Lake City-Murray metro, so the index publishes one rate set for all of it, and onsite days plus which side of the valley the office sits on move a quote more than the zip code does. Same rates, whole valley.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Salt Lake City: Which Costs Less?

Over a full year the three routes cost about the same. What changes is how fast you start and how easily you can undo the decision.

    Direct hire

    Direct hire fees

Run the math on a $90,000 direct hire, close to a Salt Lake City mid-level IT salary. The fee is $18,000. Paid once. A contract seat costs more per hour but nothing up front, so across a full year the two routes land close enough together that price rarely settles the choice. Timeline and risk do.

What actually differs is flexibility, and which risk you’d rather hold. A contract starts fast and you can scale it up or trim it without a severance conversation, but there’s no replacement guarantee if the person doesn’t work out. We’re upfront about that. A direct hire is a slower start plus the fee, and in return you get a 60-day replacement window and whoever sticks around once the project ends. Neither path is risk-free. Most Salt Lake City teams pick on timeline pressure, not price, which is why the full comparison in contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost starts with the calendar.

Method

How These Salt Lake City Numbers Are Built

Step one is a wage. One number. Nothing fancier. For every role on the list we read the Salt Lake City-Murray hourly figure from the May 2025 BLS OEWS wage tables, taking the 25th percentile for junior and Level 1 work, the median for mid and Level 2, and the 75th for senior and Level 3. Step two multiplies it by 1.24 for the employer burden. Step three applies the bill-to-cost spread that KORE1 placements show when they carry a similar cost. Three steps. That’s it. No fourth step.

The lines map to occupation codes 15-1232 for help desk, 15-1212 for the security analyst/engineer seat, 15-1244 for systems administrators, 15-1252 for software engineers, 15-1211 for ERP consultants and business systems analysts, 13-1082 for project managers, 13-2011 for accountants and 11-3031 for controllers. The Salt Lake City-Murray MSA carries no published network engineer wage line in the May 2025 release, which is why a security analyst/engineer seat stands in on that row rather than a figure we can’t source.

Some deals never enter the index because they’d drag the medians toward arrangements that look nothing like a normal Salt Lake City contract, so payroll-only setups are out, along with offshore and corp-to-corp work and any bill-to-pay spread outside the usual range. Version 2026-Q4 took effect October 16, 2026, and the next refresh is due in January 2027. Every quarter after that, too. The rest is written up in how the index is built.

Questions

Common Questions

What will I pay for a Level 2 help desk technician on a 3-month contract in Salt Lake City?

A 3-month Level 2 help desk contract in Salt Lake City runs about $24,400 at the $47 median, and hourly quotes usually land between $42 and $53 (KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4). Six months is about $48,800. A Level 1 tech sits lower, at a $37 median.

How much does a contract software engineer cost per hour in Salt Lake City in 2026?

$103 an hour is the Salt Lake City median for a mid-level contract software engineer, inside a typical range of $92 to $116, so a 13-week contract comes to about $53,600. Senior engineers bill $112 to $142 with a $126 median. Both sit about 5% under the national medians of $108 and $131.

What does a contract systems administrator cost in Salt Lake City?

Figure on $69 to $87 an hour for a mid-level systems administrator in Salt Lake City, median $77, about 3% under the national $79. A quarter runs roughly $40,000 and two quarters $80,100.

What does a contract ERP or NetSuite consultant cost in Salt Lake City?

A mid-level ERP or NetSuite consultant in Salt Lake City bills $71 to $90 an hour (median $80), about 5% under the national $84 median. A 13-week engagement lands near $41,600. Business systems analysts price the same way, because the rate follows skills demand more than the metro.

What does a contract IT project manager cost in Salt Lake City?

In short, budget $69 to $88 an hour for a mid-level IT project manager in Salt Lake City, with a $78 median and a 13-week total near $40,600. That runs a few dollars under the U.S. median of $81, so there’s no local markup to plan for.

Why is there no network engineer rate for Salt Lake City?

No, the Salt Lake City-Murray metro has no published BLS network engineer wage line for May 2025, so the index can’t model that row the way it does elsewhere. A security analyst/engineer seat, median $97 an hour, is substituted in its place until the data exists.

Does Utah payroll law change a Salt Lake City bill rate?

Not in the published numbers, because the KORE1 index applies one flat 24% employer burden in every metro. Utah still differs from other states in the details, with mandatory workers’ compensation for nearly every employer and a flat state income tax withheld from the contractor’s own pay rather than added to the employer’s burden. A good quote says which costs it covers.
