IT contractor rates in Seattle run $55 to $69 an hour for a Level 2 help desk technician (median $61) and $115 to $145 for a mid software engineer (median $128), per KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4.

Last updated: October 23, 2026

In budget terms, as of October 16, 2026, that help desk seat comes to about $31,700 for three months. The software engineer comes to about $66,400. Both are full bill rates, so wages, payroll taxes and the employer costs a staffing firm carries are already inside them. Nothing gets added later.

The question here is narrow. A Seattle IT director has a role, a level and a contract length in mind and wants a real number before the req goes to finance. Ryan McManus of KORE1 describes that buyer exactly that way, and his point is that the page with real data is the one that earns the call. So here’s the data. KORE1 has recruited technology talent since 2005, and these rates sit beside our IT staffing in Seattle work, priced on the same contract staffing terms that run through all of our IT staffing services.

One thing to know first. Every Seattle row is modeled. We explain why lower down.

Contract length

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in Seattle?

Twice as much. Almost to the dollar. The hourly rate doesn’t drop for a longer term, so the second 13 weeks cost what the first did.

At the Seattle median, a mid-level software engineer comes to about $66,400 for a quarter and $132,800 for two. A senior engineer runs $82,100 and then $164,200. On the support side, Level 2 help desk is $31,700 and $63,400. Simple arithmetic.

Here’s a Seattle quirk. A mid-level network engineer bills a $132 median here, more than the $128 for a mid software engineer. Infrastructure outprices code. Put a mid network engineer, a mid systems administrator and a Level 2 help desk tech on one 13-week refresh and the three seats total about $143,400, or $286,700 if the work runs 26 weeks. A whole dev team priced the same way is in contract development team cost.

At 26 weeks the contractor also passes 1,040 hours, the point where a KORE1 contractor can move onto your payroll with no conversion fee. Pick the longer size. The decision lands on the calendar by itself. Monthly math for more roles is in the staff augmentation cost breakdown, and the conversion route is under contract-to-hire staffing.

How Fast Can a Contractor Start in Seattle, and How Long Do Assignments Run?

Five dates matter on a Seattle contract, from the first shift to the day conversion turns free. They come from KORE1 placement records across every metro we staff.

  1. Day 3Median first shift after a signed offer, across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts
  2. Week 13520 hours, the 3-month line on the board

Drawn to scale across 26 weeks from wide screens up. The shaded stretch runs from the median assignment to the median IT assignment, and the orange mark is the 1,040-hour conversion point.

Look where the medians land. Both sit past week 13, and the IT figure is closer to week 20. A Seattle team that budgets one quarter for an IT contractor will usually be back for a second quote. Plan for it.

The front end is short. Three days from signed offer to first shift means a 13-week budget buys close to 13 weeks of actual work, not ten, and the data behind that is in how fast a contractor can start.

What Is Inside a Seattle Bill Rate?

Devin Hornick, a partner at KORE1, opens with the words people get wrong. “First off, it’s not a markup. Secondly, there’s a margin in there. And thirdly, there’s a bunch of other costs that you’re not thinking of.” He’s right.

His worked example makes it concrete. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.” The index uses that same flat 24% for Seattle, because state costs move around and one number keeps every metro comparable. A percentage quoted on wages alone often leaves the burden out. Ask what it covers, then line the bids up with our staffing agency quote comparison.

In Washington, these are the costs that live inside the burden. None of them gets its own line on an invoice. Six of them matter most.

  • Sick leave

Washington’s floor is one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked, per Labor & Industries. Inside city limits, Seattle’s Paid Sick and Safe Time ordinance keeps that rate below 250 full-time equivalents and raises it to one hour per 30 at larger employers.

  • Weekly overtime

Overtime is weekly here. Time and a half starts after 40 hours, with no daily trigger of the kind California uses, as the state overtime guidance explains.

  • State unemployment

For 2026 employers pay Washington unemployment tax on the first $78,200 of each worker’s wages, up from $72,800, according to the Employment Security Department.

  • Paid family and medical leave

The 2026 premium is 1.13% of wages, and employers with 50 or more workers cover 28.57% of it, per the state’s premium notice.

  • Workers’ comp by the hour

Washington runs workers’ compensation through a state fund, and most premiums are figured on hours worked rather than on payroll.

  • Federal payroll tax

Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45%, per IRS Publication 15. FUTA is 6.0% of the first $7,000, or a net 0.6% after the state credit (IRS Topic 759).

On top of the required list, KORE1 pays dental and vision in full for its contractors. Compare vendors on what’s inside the rate. Not the headline. Seat-per-month quotes can be turned back into an hourly figure with our guide to pricing models for staff augmentation, and the contractor burden rate page takes the 24% apart line by line.

Against the U.S.

How Do Seattle IT Contractor Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?

Same model and the same levels in both columns. Only the wage area changes.

Median contract bill rate per hour, Seattle versus United States, KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4, with the Seattle premium drawn to scale
Role and levelSeattleNationalSeattle premium
Help desk, Level 2$61$49+$12 (24%)
Systems administrator, mid$83$79+$4 (5%)
Network engineer, mid$132$106+$26 (25%)
Software engineer, mid$128$108+$20 (19%)
ERP / NetSuite consultant, mid$106$84+$22 (26%)
IT project manager, mid$103$81+$22 (27%)
Controller, mid$142$127+$15 (12%)

The premium is lopsided. Project managers, ERP consultants, network engineers and Level 2 help desk all run 24% to 27% over the U.S. median, while a mid systems administrator sits just 5% above it at $83 against $79. Controllers are in between at 12%. So a blended Seattle budget can’t take one uplift and apply it across the board. Price each seat.

Against other expensive metros, Seattle’s $128 mid software engineer matches Boston, edges New York ($127) and San Diego ($126), and sits $15 under the San Francisco Bay Area ($143). Every metro side by side is in our IT contractor rates by city comparison, the U.S. tables are in our national tech contractor hourly rates and IT consulting rates, and the California neighbors are IT contractor rates in the Bay Area and IT contractor rates in San Diego.

Does remote help? On engineering seats it can. A software engineer quoted at the national median instead of Seattle’s saves $20 an hour, which is $20,800 over 1,040 hours, but only when nobody needs the person in a Bellevue or South Lake Union office and the quote really does come in near the national figure. Help desk rarely travels. For a support seat, our monthly help desk seat cost page does the conversion, and help desk contract bill rates by level has the national tiers.

Modeled, not observed

Why Every Seattle Rate on the Board Is Modeled

We’d rather say it. Hiding it helps nobody. Most KORE1 placements are in Southern California, and no Seattle role has the five placements the index needs before it will print an observed number. So each Seattle line is a model, labeled as one.

Not a guess, though. Federal wage surveys for the metro supply the starting point, the same 24% burden sits on top, and our own billing history sets the spread. Think of each line as the spot Seattle quotes tend to crowd around. Yours will land near it.

So what moves a real quote? Mostly four things. How many days the person must sit in a Seattle or Bellevue office. Whether the req calls for something thin on the ground, like Azure landing zones, Kubernetes or one particular ERP module. How soon the start date is. And whether the title says senior while the budget says mid, a mismatch we flag before any number goes out. Admins come through our systems administrator recruiters, network seats through network engineer staffing and delivery leads through IT project manager staffing. National pricing for neighboring roles is in project manager contract rates, business analyst contract bill rates and cloud engineer contract bill rates.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in Seattle: Which Costs Less?

Over a full year the three routes cost about the same. What changes is how fast you start and how easily you can undo the decision.

    Direct hire fees

Devin’s math on a $100,000 hire goes like this. The 20% fee is $20,000, and spread across 1,040 hours that’s about what a contract bill rate carries anyway. “There’s really no savings in going direct hire versus contract,” he says. Hard to argue.

So choose on flexibility instead. A contract gets someone in fast and lets you scale up or down, while a full-time hire gives you stability and the knowledge that stays when the project ends, and the fair comparison is which choice you can reverse if the first quarter goes sideways. There’s no replacement guarantee on contract. We say that plainly. What you get instead is a contractor who shows up on time, gets paid every Friday and can convert at no fee once they pass 1,040 hours, and only direct hire carries the 60-day guarantee. The full numbers are in contract-to-hire versus direct hire cost.

Method

How These Seattle Numbers Are Built

Step one is a wage. For every role on the board we read the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue hourly figure from the May 2025 BLS OEWS wage tables, taking the 25th percentile for junior and Level 1 work, the median for mid and Level 2, and the 75th for senior and Level 3. Step two multiplies it by 1.24 for the employer burden. Step three applies the bill-to-cost spread that KORE1 placements show when they carry a similar cost. Three steps. That’s it.

The lines map to occupation codes 15-1232 for help desk, 15-1241 for network engineers, 15-1244 for systems administrators, 15-1252 for software engineers, 15-1211 for ERP consultants and business systems analysts, 13-1082 for project managers, 13-2011 for accountants and 11-3031 for controllers. Eight codes in all.

Some deals never enter the index, because they would drag the medians toward arrangements that look nothing like a normal Seattle contract. Payroll-only setups are out, along with offshore and corp-to-corp work and any bill-to-pay spread outside the usual range. Version 2026-Q4 took effect October 16, 2026, and the next refresh is due in January 2027. Every quarter after that, too. The rest is written up in how the index is built.

Questions

Common Questions

What will I pay for a Level 2 help desk technician on a 3-month contract in Seattle?

A 3-month Level 2 help desk contract in Seattle runs about $31,700 at the $61 median, and hourly quotes usually land between $55 and $69 (KORE1 Contract Rate Index 2026-Q4). Six months is about $63,400. A Level 1 tech sits lower, at a $49 median.

How much does a contract software engineer cost per hour in Seattle in 2026?

$128 an hour is the Seattle median for a mid-level contract software engineer, inside a typical range of $115 to $145, so a 13-week contract comes to about $66,400. Senior engineers bill $141 to $171 with a $158 median. Level moves the number more than the stack does.

What does a contract systems administrator cost in Seattle?

A mid-level systems administrator in Seattle bills $75 to $96 an hour, median $83, only about 5% above the national $79. That’s the smallest Seattle premium on this page. A quarter runs roughly $43,100 and two quarters $86,200.

Do ERP and NetSuite contractors cost more in Seattle?

Yes, by about $22 an hour at the median, since a mid-level ERP or NetSuite consultant in Seattle bills $94 to $119 (median $106) against $84 nationally. A 13-week engagement lands near $55,100. Business systems analysts price the same way.

What does a contract IT project manager cost in Seattle?

Figure on $90 to $119 an hour for a mid-level IT project manager in Seattle, with a $103 median and a 13-week total near $53,800. That’s 27% over the U.S. median of $81, the widest gap among the Seattle roles compared here.

Does Washington payroll law change a Seattle bill rate?

Not in the published numbers, because the KORE1 index applies one flat 24% employer burden in every metro. Washington still differs from California in the details, with weekly instead of daily overtime, a $78,200 unemployment wage base and a paid leave premium. A good quote says which costs it covers.
