Every figure on this page is a bill rate. That’s the hourly amount an employer is invoiced for a W2 contractor, with wages, payroll taxes, insurance and California’s mandated sick leave already inside it, so the number goes into a budget exactly as written. No math required.
A San Diego manager asks the same thing before opening a req. What will this seat cost for a quarter? Fair question. KORE1 was founded in 2005 and works out of Irvine, so the figures below sit beside our San Diego IT staffing team, priced on the contract staffing terms that apply across our IT staffing services.

What does a contract IT worker cost in San Diego? Depends on the role. And on whether you’re reading a pay number or a bill rate. Every figure here is a bill rate. That’s the amount on the invoice for a W2 contractor, with wages, payroll taxes, insurance and California sick leave already inside. You can budget off it as written. A Level 2 help desk technician typically bills $52 to $62 an hour. At the $57 median, 13 weeks at 40 hours comes to about $29,600. Climb the ladder and the rate climbs with it. Support, then infrastructure, then engineering. The medians climb by role and by level. Level 2 help desk is $57. A mid-level systems administrator, $83. Network engineer, $121. Software engineer, $126, and a senior software engineer, $148.
Longer terms don’t get cheaper. Nothing in a W2 contract discounts the hourly rate for a longer stay, so 520 hours and 1,040 hours scale in a straight line. The only lever is how senior a person you ask for. A mid-level software engineer at the $126 median runs about $65,300 for 13 weeks. Double the term, double the bill. About $130,600 for 26 weeks. Picture a second site in Carlsbad. Three seats for one quarter. A Level 2 help desk technician, a mid-level systems administrator and a mid-level network engineer, all at the median. That adds up to about $136,100. A number finance can approve. And once a contractor hits 1,040 hours, they can join your payroll with no conversion fee.
So what’s inside the number? Take a round $100 an hour in pay. California burden runs about 24%, so that’s $124 loaded. A bill rate on that would likely land around $150, maybe $160. A markup quoted on wages alone leaves the burden out. That’s how two honest quotes for one person end up far apart. Ask what the number covers. Paid sick leave, at least 40 hours. Daily overtime after 8 hours. Unemployment tax of 3.4% on the first $7,000. Payroll tax and insurance on top. None of it shows as its own invoice line.
How does San Diego compare with the country? Higher. The premiums run about 14% to 17% across help desk, network engineering, software and project management. Controllers and systems administrators land within about 5%. Barely a premium. A mid-level software engineer carries a $126 median here against $108 nationally. A Level 2 help desk technician, $57 against $49. Same method on both sides. Only the wage area changes.
You might be wondering how fast someone can start, and how long they stay. Assignments run longer than budgets plan for. The median KORE1 assignment is 116 days, and 136 for IT roles. That’s how a quarter’s budget quietly turns into two quarters. Starting is quick. The median wait is 3 days across 1,997 KORE1 starts, and 86% were working inside 7 days of an accepted offer. Contract, contract-to-hire or direct hire? Contract-to-hire keeps the hourly rate while you decide. Of 552 KORE1 placements, 207 ended in a hire. Direct hire is a one-time fee of 20% of base salary, with a 60-day replacement guarantee. A contract carries no guarantee, and we won’t pretend it does.
One caveat on method. The San Diego rows are modeled from May 2025 BLS wages, a 24% burden and the bill bands KORE1 sees on its own placements. The observed rows pool Southern California, not San Diego alone, and only show with 5 or more placements behind them. Role not on the list? Tell us the level, start date, term, and whether the seat is onsite or remote, and we’ll price it for San Diego. All 12 roles, with 3-month and 6-month totals, are in the full table. The link’s in the description.
What Does a Contract IT Worker Cost per Hour in San Diego in 2026?
Twelve roles, one row each. Every range runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile, so it shows where the middle half of quotes land. Thirteen weeks at 40 hours is 520 hours, and twenty-six weeks is 1,040.

How Much Does a 3-Month vs a 6-Month Contract Cost in San Diego?
Twice the term costs twice as much. Nothing in a W2 contract discounts the hourly rate for a longer stay, so 520 hours and 1,040 hours scale in a straight line, and the only lever on the hourly figure is the seniority of the person you ask for. No volume discount.
A mid-level software engineer at the San Diego median comes to about $65,300 for a quarter and $130,600 for half a year. A Level 2 help desk technician comes to $29,600, then $59,200. The monthly view of that seat is in IT support cost per month. Those are real budget lines.
Picture a second site opening in Carlsbad. Three seats, thirteen weeks. A Level 2 help desk technician, a mid-level systems administrator and a mid-level network engineer, all priced at the median for one quarter, add up to about $136,100. That’s the figure a finance team can approve.
Hit 1,040 hours and a KORE1 contractor can join your payroll without a conversion fee, so the longer term works as a built-in trial. Contract-to-hire starts there. Worth planning around. Month-by-month costs for more roles are in our staff augmentation cost breakdown.
How Fast Can a Contractor Start in San Diego, and How Long Do Assignments Run?
Across 1,997 KORE1 contract starts, the median wait from signed offer to first shift is three days. After that, the work sets the length. One stripe, one week.
- WeeksHours
- 3-month contract520 hours
- Median KORE1 assignment116 days, about 17 weeks
- Median KORE1 IT assignment136 days, about 19 weeks
- 6-month contract1,040 hours, the no-fee conversion point
Half of KORE1’s ended assignments run 116 days or less, just under 17 weeks, and IT assignments run to 136, and that’s how a quarter’s budget quietly turns into two quarters once the first snag shows up. Projects rarely finish on a round number. They finish when the work does. Not before.
Starting is quick. Across those starts, 86% were working inside seven days of an accepted offer, and 37% were working that same day. You get most of the weeks you pay for. That adds up.

What Is Inside a San Diego Contractor’s Bill Rate?
Devin Hornick, a KORE1 partner, explains it with a round number. “$100 an hour. There’s a burden of 24% generally in California… now with the burden you have $124, and so we make our profit after the $124… a bill rate on something like that would likely be around $150… maybe even $160.”
So a $100 wage becomes $124 loaded and bills somewhere near $150 to $160. A markup stated on wages alone skips the burden, and that’s how two offers for one person can sit far apart while both are honest. Ask what the number covers before you compare it. Every time.
The layers behind that $124 are California’s. None appears as its own line on an invoice. Here they are.
Paid sick leave
Every W2 contractor in California earns at least 40 hours, or 5 days, a year under the Labor Commissioner’s rules.
Daily overtime
The state counts overtime by the day, at 1.5 times pay after eight hours and double after twelve, per the DIR overtime FAQ. One long cutover night can reach both.
State unemployment
The EDD sets a new employer’s rate at 3.4% for UI and 0.1% for ETT, charged on the first $7,000 of each worker’s pay.
Federal unemployment
The federal rate starts at 6.0% on the first $7,000 and usually nets to 0.6% once the state credit applies, per IRS Topic 759. California carries an outstanding federal unemployment loan, which can cut that credit. The potential 2026 reductions are final on November 10, 2026.
Payroll tax and insurance
IRS Publication 15 puts the employer’s Social Security share at 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare at 1.45%. Workers’ compensation and liability insurance come on top of that.
Benefits KORE1 picks up
Dental and vision, in full.
Line the quotes up that way before choosing. Anything else misleads. A vendor that charges per seat each month can be restated as an hourly rate using our guide to staff augmentation pricing models, and the full anatomy of one rate is in what a contractor burden rate covers.
How Do San Diego Rates Compare With the National Benchmark?
Same method and same levels on both sides. Only the wage area changes.
| Role and level | San Diego | National | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Help desk, Level 2 | $57 | $49 | +$8 |
| Systems administrator, mid | $83 | $79 | +$4 |
| Network engineer, mid | $121 | $106 | +$15 |
| Software engineer, mid | $126 | $108 | +$18 |
| ERP / NetSuite consultant, mid | $94 | $84 | +$10 |
| IT project manager, mid | $93 | $81 | +$12 |
| Controller, mid | $133 | $127 | +$6 |
A Level 2 help desk technician carries a $57 median here against $49 nationally, and a mid-level software engineer carries $126 against $108, so the two roles most buyers ask about both sit well above the national line. Those two sit inside the widest premiums, which run 14% to 17% across help desk, network engineering, software and project management. ERP consultants run about 12% over. Controllers and systems administrators land within about 5%. Barely a premium.
Neighbors put the numbers in context. The San Diego mid software engineer median of $126 is $2 above Los Angeles and Orange County ($124), $17 under the Bay Area ($143) and $20 over Dallas-Fort Worth ($106). Project management is where San Diego pulls away from its neighbors, at $93 a mid-level hour against $86 up the coast. That’s a real gap. The Bay Area figures behind that $17 gap are in Bay Area hourly rates by role.
Twenty-two metros sit side by side in our IT contractor rates by city comparison, with the Southern California neighbors on the Los Angeles and Orange County rate pages. The national tables are in tech contractor hourly rates for 2026.

Why the KORE1 Placement Rows Don’t Match the San Diego Model
None of the four lower rows is San Diego only. They pool W2 starts KORE1 made between 2023 and 2026, most in Los Angeles and Orange County, and any row needs five or more placements to appear. Regional, not local. The index doesn’t carry a San Diego-only median yet. Keep that in mind.
Three of the four come in lower than the model. Help desk placements billed a $49 median across 39 placements, systems administrators $57 across 12 and software engineers $105 across 16, and each of those figures blends every level of seniority while the modeled rows price one specific level. Different yardsticks.
Project managers run the other way. Across 21 placements the median was $116, against $93 modeled for a mid-level hire in San Diego. The group mixes in program managers and scrum masters from ERP and software engagements, and the BLS category covers every project specialty. Bigger scope, bigger rate. The national project and scrum picture is in project manager contract bill rates.
So for a San Diego req, start from the modeled row. Easy rule. If the title says program, lean toward the observed figure. We fill admin seats through our systems administrator recruiters and delivery leads through the IT project manager recruiters.

Contract, Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire in San Diego: Which Costs Less?
Across a full year the three routes cost closer to each other than most buyers assume. The real difference is cash timing and what you can still reverse. Timing, mostly.

How These San Diego Numbers Are Built
Each modeled row starts with the BLS wage for that occupation in the San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad metropolitan area, from the May 2025 OEWS wage tables. Junior and Level 1 rows use the 25th percentile, mid and Level 2 rows the median, and senior and Level 3 rows the 75th. The 24% employer burden comes next, followed by the bill-to-cost spread KORE1 observes on its own placements at that cost. That’s the whole method. Nothing hidden.
Help desk maps to 15-1232, systems administration to 15-1244, network engineering to 15-1241, software to 15-1252, ERP and business systems analysis to 15-1211, project management to 13-1082, accounting to 13-2011 and controllers to 11-3031. Eight codes, twelve rows.
Observed rows are drawn from W2 contract and contract-to-hire starts between 2023 and 2026. Payroll-only deals, offshore and corp-to-corp work and unusual bill-to-pay spreads stay out, because they’d drag the medians toward arrangements that don’t look like a typical San Diego contract. Version 2026-Q4 started October 16, 2026 and updates again in January 2027, and the index methodology documents every step. Quarterly.
